“Iranian Arms, Fighters Bolster Maduro Government in Venezuela, U.S. Says”

#Iran has a long history of meddling in #Venezuela with the U.S. in its crosshairs.

And Obama facilitated the mullahs’

2)
Iran has sent arms & dispatched paramilitary operatives to help Maduro remain in power.

“We see a growing Iranian influence in there,” said Adm. Craig Faller, head of the U.S. Southern Command, citing the “alarming & concerning” presence of IRGC Quds Force military personnel.
3)
“We’re concerned about what we see…It’s not just oil shipments, it’s arms shipments as well,” Adm. Craig Faller said. “We saw an uptick in that this year. We are watching the rate of change very carefully.”

“… flotillas are often accompanied by Iranian naval vessels, including an intelligence ship that U.S. officials say has been used to transport missiles to Iranian proxies in the Middle East…”

“Iran’s Mahan Air, an airline sanctioned by the U.S. for transporting men, money & arms for the terror-designated IRGC, has also restarted flights between the two countries…”

6)
“Earlier this year, an Iranian conglomerate owned by the country’s military and tied to its missile program established a retail foothold in Venezuela, according to Western officials and records detailing the move.”

Iranian oil tankers en route to Venezuela despite US sanctions

Digging into why #Iran’s mullahs will forever be grateful to Obama for the windows provided to establish ties with Maduro’s regime in Venezuela.

8)
Iran has been bailing out Maduro by sending:
-blending components used for producing gasoline
-workers, equipment for oil refining
-and gasoline cargoes into Venezuela

(All the while, Iran says it needs money to address COVID-19.)

Iran did not establish such strong ties with the Chavez/Maduro regime in Venezuela overnight.

Back in 2011, former president Hugo Chavez agreed to permit Iran build missile bases in the South American country.

And the Obama admin denied everything.
https://t.co/o8XA78KpU0
11)
This is interesting from the Obama years (& of course reported by CNN).

“The U.S. State Department said Saturday that it reviews all information pertaining to Iranian military involvement in the hemisphere, but that it could not vouch for the report.”
https://t.co/hT8fvVApDT
12)
"We have no evidence to support this claim & therefore no reason to believe the assertions made in the article are credible," Obama’s State Dept. said.

Maduro described the allegations as an "extravagant lie."

(Here with his then Iranian counterpart Manouchehr Mottaki)
13)
This goes all the way back to the early days of Obama’s tenure.

“The missile base is part of a pattern that began in March 2009, when President Obama met Chavez at an Organization of American States meeting in Trinidad.”

14)
Appeasement 101

“President Obama shook hands with the dictator, as usual, and said he wanted to be friends and reset US-Venezuelan relations. Chavez responded by presenting Obama with a book that claims the United States plunders Latin America.”
15)
“… the radicals ruling Iran are emboldened by the confusion of the Obama administration in confronting Iran’s nuclear program.”
https://t.co/L9eYoEx87O

Obama, of course, had broader issues in mind with Tehran & went the distance to prevent any interruptions.
16)
Under Obama’s watch, Iran was establishing a very dangerous relationship with the Chaves/Maduro regime in Venezuela, involving uranium & Hezbollah sleeper cells.
https://t.co/4e2p2Ypiy7

And at least three Iranian missile bases in Venezuela.

The Trump administration, however, does understand the risk of Iran-backed Hezbollah being active in Venezuela.

“The secret backstory of how Obama let Hezbollah off the hook”

"… the Obama administration derailed an ambitious law enforcement campaign targeting drug trafficking by the Iranian-backed terrorist group Hezbollah."

21)
“This was a policy decision, it was a systematic decision,” said David Asher, an illicit finance expert. “They serially ripped apart this entire effort that was very well supported and resourced, and it was done from the top down.”
22)
When appeasement enters dangerous sectors of a government:

“John Brennan, Mr. Obama’s counterterror chief who later led the CIA, had argued in May 2010 that Hezbollah was evolving into a political party.”
https://t.co/A80gGjQaPN
23)
Here's a look at what John Brennan calls a "political party"...
24)
“Project Cassandra officials told Politico that they were transferred to other assignments after Mr. Obama’s deal with Iran was announced in January 2016.”
https://t.co/vMAGdGo6lN
25)
“... the Obama Justice Department refused to pursue Abdallah Safieddine, the leader in charge of coordinating Hezbollah’s global drug trafficking operations, who also serves as Hezbollah’s liaison officer in Tehran”
https://t.co/f2TzS5kyE5
26)
Obama’s appeasement vis-a-vis Iran/Chavez/Maduro gets even more disturbing:

https://t.co/xuNBTe8zSv
27)
And:
28)
And talking about links & ties, we all remember how Obama had good relations with Chavez.

In my opinion, as Obama betrayed the people of Iran in 2009, one could say he betrayed the people of Venezuela, too.
29)
While I haven’t done the research, I wouldn’t be surprised that Assad in Syria also benefited from Obama’s appeasement of Iran’s regime in Venezuela.

Of course, we all remember how Obama backed off from his Syria “red line” …
30)
The most effective method to support the people of Iran & Venezuela in their struggle for freedom & democracy is to bring a complete end to the appeasement policy once & for all.

This thread explains why I despise the appeasement policy.

A year ago today, #Iran’s IRGC deliberately shot down Ukrainian flight #PS752, killing all 176 on board.

Regime officials have lied from day one & just recently blamed it on “U.S. adventurism.”

Ukrainian forensics chief Alexander Ruvin suggested from evidence obtained that passengers on flight PS752 were out of their seats before two missiles hit the plane outside Tehran, capital of #Iran.

"And [yet] we saw the corpses of the dead lying on the ground, without seats…if the people were fastened, they would fall with their seats, as was the case with passengers of [shot-down] flight MH17 [in Ukraine]," he added.

WARNING-GRAPHIC

4)
The plane was downed on the same morning that Iran launched ballistic missiles targeting US forces in Iraq. Asked why didn’t officials clear the skies of passenger planes, one official said it would have revealed Iran’s intention to launch the attack.

5)
The Iranian side immediately bulldozed the site of the downed airplane, obviously to hide important evidence.
Even their UK ambassador @baeidinejad lied about this.

I'll bite, Mr. Gray. We can even play by your rather finicky rules.

Let's begin with some of the things you have said about Xinjiang, notably absent from your more recent media appearances, but still present in your blog about your 2014 biking trip.

The following is taken from an ongoing list I keep of people who have been to Xinjiang and written/spoken about their experiences. It is separate from the testimony of detainees and their relatives I also keep. Jerry is on this

Jerry, your article for CGTN, as well as your various Medium pieces, belabor themselves to emphasize the smoothness of your time in Xinjiang. Why did you leave out so many details from your log of your 2014 trip? They seem relevant.

For example, would CGTN not let you speak about Shanshan, the town that evidently disturbed you so much?

Why, pray tell, after noting how kind and hospitable Xinjiang police were to you in 2019 for CGTN—and how you were never told where you could or could not go—would you omit these details?
🧵 ⚡️ #Navalny, in handcuffs, expects his second verdict in one day NOW, about to be ready any minute now. He’s joking about cucumbers he pickles in his cell. I will translate his SECOND last address in one day but here is the previous trial coverage

Extracts from #Navalny last address #2 today: “Putin’s party is akin a swine devouring oil and gas dollars from a trough, & when poked & reminded that $ are for everyone, growls, “What about the WWII? What about veterans?!” The verdict is due any minute now. #FreeNavalny 👇🏼☝🏼

The judge is back and reads the verdict now.

“The politician criticized the participants in the [RT] video in support of the amendments to the Constitution, calling the presenters "corrupt lackeys", "traitors" and "people without conscience."

The judge says Navalny pleaded not guilty and called the persecution politicized.

This is a pretty valiant attempt to defend the "Feminist Glaciology" article, which says conventional wisdom is wrong, and this is a solid piece of scholarship. I'll beg to differ, because I think Jeffery, here, is confusing scholarship with "saying things that seem right".

The article is, at heart, deeply weird, even essentialist. Here, for example, is the claim that proposing climate engineering is a "man" thing. Also a "man" thing: attempting to get distance from a topic, approaching it in a disinterested fashion.

Also a "man" thing—physical courage. (I guess, not quite: physical courage "co-constitutes" masculinist glaciology along with nationalism and colonialism.)

There's criticism of a New York Times article that talks about glaciology adventures, which makes a similar point.

At the heart of this chunk is the claim that glaciology excludes women because of a narrative of scientific objectivity and physical adventure. This is a strong claim! It's not enough to say, hey, sure, sounds good. Is it true?
