In response to my posts supporting repeal of Section 230 (https://t.co/ceZZWXyzi6 and https://t.co/af0rjlGTVF) I have a number of people give me horror stories about bad post-repeals hypotheticals (thread)

Let me say that none of these hypoetheticals sound that bad to me (I couldn't care less if Substack goes under -- sorry to all the Substackers out there), but let me give a hypothetical horror story allowed by Section 230

Imagine that some right-winger bought tens of millions of dollars worth of ads on Facebook, with a doctored photo, showing your favorite politician, activist, writer, academic etc, doing the the most disgusting thing imagineable

The target of these ads would of course have the right to sue the person who paid for the ads for defamation.

Suppose that "person" was the XYZ corporation, whose existence is a post office box in Lincoln, Nebraska, registered to John Doe.

Talent: The great paradox.

Paradox in that it exists and equally it is something of a myth.

But how can something both be real and fake at the same time?

Well, it is not really fake, I believe we just have a very fake understanding of talent that is widely accepted as truth but infact is false and has dire consequences

Lets take Persons A and B for example who do the same task. A does a fairly good job while B produces magnificent results.

In the situation where both were largely unknown, the general interpretation is that B is a huge talent! Or B is a genius or some other related narration

This narration is flawed in that it takes into no account how both A and B came to arrive at the point of said task so how could their performance be accurately ascribed to just 'talent?

Perhaps B had a great teacher and A had a poor one?

Perhaps B was introduced to said task at age 5 and had 10 years of accumulated experience before A was introduced to said task?

Perhaps B just put in more effort into honing their craft than A?

1) All of us are disgusted & fed up with the Republican Party (except a few perpetual grifters in DC).

2) There are calls for a new "Patriot" or "MAGA" Party. I get it. Good intentions. But there are structural reasons why a new party will fail & why we have to take over the GOP

3) When I say "structural" some people gloss over that as if it's unimportant.

It's fundamental. You don't build a house on a bad foundation. If you set up a commerce site, you have a structure as to how you take payments.

You may wish you could go outside that structure . . .

3) contd . . . but if you want your money, you have to either work in the structure or completely obliterate the site. You can't have two competing sites for your money.

4) Likewise if you want to get in your house, you may have 20 keys, but the car key usually won't let you in

5) The structural basis of parties is unchangeable. It was set in the 1820s by Martin Van Buren as a way to protect slavery with the DemoKKKrat Party. But it's also embedded in the Constitution with the "winner take all/single member district" system of representation.

6) This has resulted in a 200-year-old system that is set in place. First, Van Buren, to get people to support a party that would protect slavery, had to reward them with something big.

Jobs.

He created the "spoils system" of rewarding loyalists with party & gubment jobs.

In 2017 review of police oversight, Justice Michael Tulloch recommended that the OIPRD should investigate all public complaints to "help foster public trust in not only the complaints system, but policing more generally." 4/

He also recommended that ''OIPRD should have the power to lay disciplinary charges against officers'' instead of directing the police chief to do so. Even if the chief held power & discretion, the chief is limited under the PSA to exercise it. 5/

We have to normalize the belief that government, run effectively, makes our lives better.

We have to acknowledge, at long last, Reaganism was poison. And Trumpism is its pure form.

We used to be a great country that did great things like putting men on the moon.

We can do it again, but not until we make belief that governance is good again.

Can you imagine that was an applause line for a political party? People who actually wanted to govern?

We need to get these clowns away from the levers of power for good. They always make this self-fulfilling prophecy, and now the cost is in hundreds of thousands of lives lost.

Why is anyone surprised that when clowns like these are in charge they can’t find their ass with two hands and a map?

Normalize the belief that thoughtful and effective governance is good and necessary.

gained through 2019 turned to sadness and rage. I held hope for a Yang cabinet position, though, as that is just how political favors are paid ... and Yang clearly did Joe a favor, however small it may have seemed at the time.

I will never know what went on in that twisted little brain of his, but suddenly, every lesson we learned since the great Spanish Flu pandemic was out the window "to own the libs." Freedom, or something. This is my personal "picture of the year." It motivated nearly everything /

It is with a glad heart that I welcome everyone to the New Year, 2021.

The out-gone year was quite dramatic and it is only by the grace of the Almighty God that we survived to witness the succeeding year.

It is cheering that we are entering the New Year with refreshing news of a handful of certified vaccines against the dreaded Covid-19 virus. And better still is news of commencement of vaccination in some parts of the world.

I am expectant that the vaccine(s) would soon be available for vaccination in Nigeria. It is also hoped that very soon life would return to normal.

As a country, we have taken our share of the blow that Covid-19 dealt to the globe. And worst still, we suffered a multi-facet downcast on account of lazy and uninspiring leadership from the government at the centre - most especially.
