1. Investing success does NOT come from ignoring or suppressing emotion. Assuming that you have relevant expertise, disregarding intuition and empathetic feelings because they cannot be explained, is a mistake!

2. Self-awareness is the first and most important step in improving as an investor. An investment approach needs to fit with your unique set of motivations, personality traits, weaknesses, and strengths. Don’t try to be exactly like Warren Buffett if you are not like him!

3. Humans have certain common investing vulnerabilities, but everybody is unique in their susceptibility to them. Consider your weaknesses to be the investing biases and traps to which you are most prone.

This book was published around 1937 by investing legend Ben Graham. Ben is also regarded as the guy under whom the great Warren Buffett started his investing journey.

This book teaches financial statement analysis in a very simple manner. It also focuses on the key relationship between P&L, B/s & Cash flow statements of a company.

1.B/s shows how much a company owns (assets) & owes (liabilities) at a particular point in time mostly prepared on a semi-annual & annual basis.

2.Assets=Tangible (PP&E, inventories, accounts receivable, cash)+intangible Assets (trademark, lease rights, goodwill)

3.Liabilities=Short term debt (accounts payable,current portion of long term debt,advances from customers) + Long term Debt (bank loans,bonds,lease liability)
4.Tangible assets are written down through depreciation & intangibles are written down through amortization or impairment

5. Depreciation & amortization means normal wearing out assets over its typical lifespan. It allows the cost of the asset to be charged off (in the income statement) over a number of years.

6. Depletion gets applied in commodity businesses like cement, mining, and crude oil.

No. of yrs required to double your money at a given rate, U just divide 72 by interest rate
Eg, if U want to know how long it will take to double your money at 8% interest, divide 72 by 8 and get 9 yrs

At 6% rate, it will take 12 yrs
At 9% rate, it will take 8 yrs

No. of years required to triple your money at a given rate, U just divide 114 by interest rate.

For example, if you want to know how long it will take to triple your money at 12% interest, divide 114 by 12 and get 9.5 years

🤔 Thread: More of the wrong thing is less
(or, how I stepped off the hamster wheel)

I’m going to share a personal story with hope that it inspires at least one person to re-examine their definition of success 👇

Through hard work and an unfair share of luck, I’ve done some cool “bucket list” things in my career:

✅Raised VC from the worlds’ top firms
✅Helped build 100’s of millions in revenue from nothing
✅Rang the bell at the NYSE
✅Met & did deals with billionaires & business icons

These are things I dreamed about when I was young and I treasure some of the memories. But when they finally happened I felt surprisingly unfulfilled. I was scoring lots of points but didn’t feel like I was winning.

Then a few years ago during a board meeting I had a moment of clarity. I looked around the table at 10 people, all absurdly successful by financial measures. There wasn’t a single person I wanted to emulate. Most were unhealthy and several had told me that they were unhappy.

Within months I walked away from from a 7-figure salary, moved my family to Boulder, & haven’t looked back. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a capitalist & like money as much as anyone. But for me it's not the thing, and *more of the wrong thing is less*.

It's a state of *self-sufficiency*. It's when you have enough money, and enough income-producing assets, that you and your family can live comfortably for the rest of your lives -- WITHOUT needing a job.

Financial Independence is not really about spending MONEY how we like -- although, to an extent, that becomes possible.

It's about being FREE to spend our TIME how we like.

As I understand it, by shouldering the financial risk, self-insured employers can curate a list of more relevant benefits ... (1/10)
