On the eve of Maattu Pongal, here are a few personal Cow Remembrances 1/n
A Half Wall separated the houses and I would climb up to watch the guy who milched their cow. 3/n
Thatha and Paatti maintained 3 Cows
The Big Red, Elder Karumi (Blacky) and the Younger Karumi 5/n
She was combative and wore her passion up her legs. She had a bad temper and showed it.
And God, did she have a powerful kick 7/n
She listened to only two people - Narayanan, who milched her and Paatti. 8/n
Paatti was frail and took care of the cows, fed them. She also did the delivery. 9/n
Our friend was the Younger Karumi. She was small, very docile. You can hug her, pull her tail, stroke her, scratch her under the chin, feed her and she would never complain and is always happy 11/n
Thatha will take her out for grazing and leave her untied. By 2 pm she will find her way back on her own, climb the steps 12/n
"Ezhunthirungo, Karumi vanthirukka" (Get up, Karumi is here) 13/n
I have seen such good behaviour only one another person in my life 14/n
