Shri Krishna is stated straightforwardly in Uttara Kanda of Valmiki Ramayan. Once Shri Ram did not see his subjects for 4 days & spent his time alone. Shri Ram then commands Lakshman to check if anyone was waiting to see him.
“O Dear Saumitri, 4 days have gone by since I concerned myself with the interests of my people & my soul is tormented; now call together family priests & ministers The king who does not fulfil his duties in regard to his people each day, undoubtedly falls into the darkest hell.”
Shri Rama then tells a tale to Lakshman about a king named Nriga who was cursed by Brahmanas to become a lizard. 2 Brahmanas were having a quarrel over a cow,so they went to approach King Nriga. Sadly they were not given entrance to the palace even after waiting for a long time.
Having tarried there many days and nights, they became greatly enraged and those two illustrious ascetics, furious at not achieving their purpose, uttered the following dreadful malediction :—

(kindly zoom slightly)
Bhagavata Purana contains the story of liberation of King Nriga by Shri Krishna

Shri Rama then told Lakshman

“O Lakshman, King Nriga is still suffering under that dreadful curse. The folly of not attending to the dispute between contestants is to be attributed to the king.
Therefore let all those who have come for reasons of arbitration be ushered into my presence, though a king does not seek the fruit of duty fulfilled. Go now personally and see if anyone seeks audience with me.”

O prince! Thus concentrate on that omnipotent eternal Lord with the mantra - ‘OM NAMO BHAGWATE VAASUDEVAAY’ .

https://t.co/H62ehDT3ix

The prince Dhruv greeted the sages and continued on his journey. At last, he reached a beautiful forest Madhuvan on the bank of the river Yamuna. It was the same forest, which was later occupied by a demon Madhu.

Shatrughana, the youngest brother of Sri Rama had killed demon Lavan, son of Madhu in the same forest & founded the township of Mathura. In the same forest, prince Dhruv decided to carry out his penance. As per the dictate of the sages, he began to recite the mantra continuously

Very soon, the earth began to move because of Dhruv’s severe penance. Even the seat of Indra could not remain stable. A stampede resulted among the gods. The gods then hatched a conspiracy to disturb the penance.
