Imposter Syndrome 101

What if, I’m not good enough? What if, I try it and fail? What if, I speak up and say something dumb? Surely, I’m out of my league here.

Sound familiar? That annoying inner-voice is more common than you may think.

Here’s Imposter Syndrome 101...

1/ First, what is it?

Imposter syndrome is a psychological phenomenon in which a person doubts their skills, talents, or accomplishments and has a persistent fear of being exposed as a fraud.

Essentially, you attribute your success to dumb luck and/or believe it is undeserved.

2/ A pair of psychologists, Suzanna Imes & Pauline Clance, first noted this phenomenon in the 1970’s while observing 178 high-achieving women.

Inexplicably, the women had convinced themselves they were not that smart, instead they had simply fooled anyone who thought otherwise.

3/ Initially, Imes & Clance believed this ‘imposter’ feeling was exclusive to women.

They theorized that since women were (wrongly) stereotyped as less capable at the time, these high-achievers rationalized their accolades by concluding it was all fake or perceived.

4/ In the time since researchers have established imposter syndrome can affect us all.

And, as many as 7 out of 10 of us have our own internal struggles with this self-defeating belief system.

As it turns out, high performers by their very nature are prone to imposter feelings.

Thread - 8 habits of people that are going to accomplish anything they want:

1. Managing your energy, not your time

Motivation/discipline stems from having the energy to do something

Eat better, move more, and consume less mindless entertainment

Line up your most important tasks in the morning when your energy is highest

2. Spending time with winners

3. Reframing

Rather than seeing something as a problem, see it as a challenge

December 16, 2020 Ronald McKeithen walked out of prison after 37 years of incarceration. Watching this beautiful human experience freedom for the first time in his adult life has been nothing short of a miracle. Ron was sentenced to die in prison in 1984, when he was 22. 1/12

In the last 5 weeks he’s experienced so many firsts. His first suit. First Zoom. His first welcome home party that friends, including me, threw for him when he was still pinching himself to make sure freedom was real. At 58, Ron now lives in the very first room of his own. 2/12

I first met Ron in 2014 and was shocked to learn his life without parole sentence was for a single convenience store robbery. Ron was 21 at the time & had 3 prior property crimes on his record, 2 from a single incident. Alabama's habitual offender law mandated the sentence. 3/12

A dedicated public interest attorney, Carla Crowder with @AlaAppleseed argued that Ron's terminal sentence was cruel & unusual and a judge agreed. The victims in Ron's robbery supported his freedom and Jefferson County's DA, @VoteDannyCarr, did not object. 4/12

All these folks worked together to free Ron, but this is rare. Hundreds of men & women serving LWOP for robberies and burglaries have no way out. “I left too many people behind,” Ron said. “I’m not so special. There are other guys who would do just as well as me out here.” 5/12

#MakeAbleistsUncomfortable if you think giving money to charities is more "legitimate" and "safe" than giving money directly to any of the many disabled people on here begging for our lives, for freedom from abuse, for needed mobility aids, etc, that's a problem.

And it is linked to the idea of fraudsters scamming the welfare system; that idea has created a deep association between disabled people desperately asking for help, and greedy fraudsters. It has deepened the already-extent idea of the "deserving" and the "undeserving", as well

as the idea that charities, organisations, the government, etc - in short, mostly non-disabled people - are qualified to decide who really deserves money and support, that they should be authorities over us and have the power to determine what we have access to and what we don't.

It's ok to support charities and organisations, so long as you've actually done your research (listening to what disabled people say about them) to ensure they're good. I'm not saying you have to give to people asking for money. I'm just saying that if you have some deeply held

conviction against giving money directly to people in need, just in case they're scamming you (which charities might also be doing, for the record), that's likely based in some ideas that have already been harmful to so many disabled people in so many ways.

I wish more people understood how important communication is. Let me tell you a story:

In 2018, I went on a rather edifying date. She was funny, laughed like a baby, and had the largest, prettiest set of eyes I am yet to see. We'd been talking over the phone for months prior.

I knew at the time, she was dealing with heartbreak. But so was I. We were both rather cautious - justifiably so. At some point, she started talking about her ex & I encouraged it. I didn't give much in return except mumbling, but in my mind, the sirens came on. "Run! Run! Run!".

I felt she was still clinging on to the ex. I thought, "she is so comfortable talking to me about her ex, she must be committing to the friend zone". Personally, I'd never mention my ex on such a date, even though I was still hurting. I was gauging her communication on my metrics

At that point, I shut down. I stopped listening, made some mental calculations, & determined flight was my best play. I was wary of rejection, & her speaking candidly about her ex in the present tense, felt like a rejection: like she was hoping he'd come back. I felt inadequate.

I escorted her to the bus stage & she was looking into my eyes, not wanting to go, & I really liked her, & I wanted to hug her so bad, but I don't do PDA. It would take some learning. After lingering for a while, she finally left. And now came the next part...

Have you noticed when you meet a particular brother or sister for the first time, you get along with them instantly. You agree on most things, you feel comfortable in their presence and most importantly you talk to them as if you have known them for years.

You even express yourself in a way that would take you months or even years with other people. You don't hold back what you want to say and can express yourself freely in their presence.

After meeting them a few times you have a firm attachment to them and proudly proclaim them to be your brother or sister.

In my home, surrounded by my loved ones, I live my life “as a woman” for all intents and purposes.

When I step outside I join a community of diverse experiences and perspectives. It’s not a safe space. It’s not meant to be affirming. I am not a woman, and it matters. (Thread)

Though my family, my boyfriend and I make little reference to my being male, we are all aware of that fact. There is no deception, no games.

To make an effort to convince the world I am female is not the same thing. It is coercion. It is delusion. It is fundamentally wrong.

Stepping out and meeting the world as I am, a gender-nonconforming male, is brave. It’s scary. I know that what people think of me is what they think of ME.

Pretending to be a woman is not brave. Pretending there is no difference between men and women is not a victimless crime.

I love my brothers and sisters who struggle with gender dysphoria, however they choose to deal with it. It’s out of that love that I speak the truth, and ask them to do the same. We are beautiful and worthy as trans people not because we “change sex” but because we persevere.

The legacy we should leave future generations is that however you choose to live your life should be celebrated so long as it doesn’t harm anyone else. Not that we must feign becoming the opposite sex to be good enough, no matter who we hurt in the process.

The Single Issue: A Thread about Microaggressions

I have a lot of friends and family who are single, many of them women. Sure, they might always or sometimes wish they had a good partner, but all of them are able to be happy, confident, and lead fulfilling lives as singles.

There's a stigma to being single in many circles, including or especially in Christian ones. Don't let ignorance or ignorant words destroy your capacity to enjoy yourself and your solitude!

These are some microaggressions that single women often endure.

After you've had a read, I'd love to hear from you about microaggressions you've faced so we can face them head on, together.

1. Being asked why she is single?

You wouldn’t ask someone why they were married so don’t ask single women why they’re single. It requires no justification. It requires no deeper understanding. Each person's circumstance impacts why they may/may not want to be in a relationship

2. Assuming a women’s singleness is of her personality

Women who are strong, independent or focused their careers or hobbies are often blamed for their single relationship status. They're expected to ignore those ambitions or interests in order to actively seek relationships.
