#JPM2021 @GenapSys My Highlights: I think it's fair to say I am more excited than most about this #NGS company, as I see them as an example of how to enter the market while keeping a small profile ($249M raised so far).

They now are aiming at 2021 to ship two new chips: 50MM read chip and 144MM sensor chip (not sure what the difference is between read/sensor).

They show a slide of price per Gb with #Illumina products as a reference, and their products now lined up, I think, for the first time with price per Gb info. Lowest will be the 144MM chip at ~$27/Gb.

As their technology is closer to the #IonTorrent than to the cycle-by-cycle SBS-based sequencing methods, they should have microindel errors in their profile. These look much better, almost null, than the S5 data they show in comparison.

The next slide, also about error rates, either for each base as the run progresses or sliced in GC% windows, has a lot of info, but difficult to read. I think the summary is that the @Genapsys profile shows a bit of microindel error but otherwise comparable to 100bp ILMN data.

Today in #DetectingDeception is the false comparison. I've seen this graphic a few places on social media and I don't know if it's authentic, but for this discussion, that doesn't really matter. Here's why something like this would have issues.

2/ When you look at information, there are a few relevant questions you might ask:

Is it true?

Is it in context?

Is it relevant?

3/ I started by looking at the source. There IS a Major Cities Chiefs Association, and they did produce a report on last summer's protests you can find on their website.

4/ I didn't see on their site or their Twitter feed any numbers about last week. If the graphic is real, I would hope the source for those numbers was at least said on air. (That doesn't help me now, and is a reason to make your graphics complete #TeachJMC)

5/ Are the elements of the graphic in context? Here's where I start to have problems. Looking at the original report, it states that there were around 8700 protests noted over a roughly 2-month period. If that's the left column, the right is 1 day.

There was near a universal view that bank stocks were unattractive in March-April last

year.

When the ($XLF) was about $21, and I was buying, it was over $31.50 in pre-market trading, one analyst on our site said it was patently foolish to expect a rally in the sector. As to leading the market it was next to unimaginable to that observer.

A well-known

commentator on CNBC said banks were uninvestable because of some vague theory and narrative that they have permanently lost their competitive advantage. (He is now long!)

Others have just wobbled back and forth without any conviction.

I spent months in my Diary, in the media

and in speeches, outlining the merits - both short and long term - of the banking industry and stocks. I am sure, as the stocks traded near their lows, many were fed up with my own theories on the banking industry's attraction.

4) XHS tapped into this desire by creating an online community where people can share details of what they brought and where. In elaborate posts with multiple accompanying pictures. Showing off your lavish life while being helpful is fun.

5) After building up a robust and lively community among mostly affluent young women, XHS moved into cross-border commerce in 2015. Now rather than just looking at the pretty items from France, you can buy them.

Ahmed Hassan and Khairi Saadallah share some interesting and troubling characteristics. Both are now serving huge prison sentences for Islamist terrorism - Hassan for the Parsons Green Tube bomb in 2017, Saadallah for the Reading attack last year.

Both Saadallah and Hassan entered the country from conflict zones as asylum seekers. Both claimed/were revealed to have been affiliated with Islamist militias & were combat seasoned. Both had extensive contact with counter terror Police/Prevent until days before their offences.

In both cases other professionals involved with the perpetrators or NGOs picked up on an accelerating descent into radicalised behaviour and alerted professional authorities. These concerns were either not taken seriously or not acted on.

I'm not going to comment on government policy for asylum seekers but it is well evidenced that such people, particularly if young or unaccompanied seem much more likely to suffer from PTSD and other psychological problems. There is a relationship between this & violent extremism.

So where we have large numbers of people escaping violence in other countries to UK/already settled and psychologically damaged/culturally disabled by their experience and socialisation we also have a clearly demonstrated *potential* security risk.
