We’re Going On A Behr Hunt. A thread about hypocritical Corbynites, their stupidity and their antisemitism.

Yesterday, Guardian journalist Rafael Behr published an extraordinarily compelling piece about having a heart attack at the age of 45. In it he identified a number of

causes, including hereditary disposition, lifestyle and the nature of his job covering UK politics. On the last, he pointed out the age-old stressful nature of political journalism had been exacerbated in the last five years by the divisiveness rendered by Brexit and Corbynism.

Behr is Jewish and so also emphasised the way in which Labour’s top-to-bottom antisemitism festival since 2015 had added a particular distress in his, and many other, cases. He explained, with great erudition, how Jewish history leaves us with a reasonably gloomy view

of where institutionalised Jew-baiting in an electorally muscular political party might lead. And why the dark jokes (and yes in normal times they are only that) about keeping suitcases packed and friends with big attics close, sometimes come to not seem that funny.

For Corbynism’s most vicious antisemites, the article has been a thought-provoking and chastening moment which they have used to reassess their spite towards Jews hahahahaha no of course it hasn’t.

Continuity Corbynism has reacted in its traditional ways, raging that

Finally read the new update on UK variant B.1.1.7, posted yesterday, which includes a study suggesting the variant is no more (or less) severe than prior virus variants.

Researchers took 1769 cases of people infected with the new variant and then looked for 1769 cases of people with “normal” virus to compare them to. They chose these so that median age and proporion of females was the same. That’s why it’s called a “matched cohort study”

They then compared hospitalizations for the two groups:
Overall 42 people were hopsitalized,
16 with the variant
26 with wild-type
The difference between the two was not significant.

Caveat: “Due to potential time delays for receipt of hospital admissions data, the identified hospital admissions should be regarded as a minimum number of hospital admissions and further admissions data are likely to be received into this NHS dataset in the future.”

The researchers also compared fatality rate for those cases where 28 days had elapsed since sample was taken:
12 of 1430 (0.89%) variant cases had died
10 of 1360 (0.73%) wild-type cases had died
Again, the difference was not significant.

1/ Thread: You are not a lottery ticket

Peter Thiel is a contrarian. In 2013, he spoke in SXSW pushing against the conventional wisdom of luck’s outsized role.

2/ I like Thiel’s ideas not because I fully agree with them, but because he consistently pushes against ideas that seem settled.

Peter showed a simple 2x2 framework to make his case.

Are we optimistic/pessimistic about the future?
Is the future determinate or indeterminate?

3/ Optimists think about the promises of the future whereas pessimists deeply fear the future.

If the future is determinate, you should have strong conviction. If it is not, you should heavily diversify.

4/ In the 50s-60s, Americans not only believed they would be at the forefront of progress but also had big, hairy audacious projects in mind that would materialize the definite future they had in mind.

5/ US, generally speaking, still remains optimistic perhaps by just extrapolating the past, but the future vision seems increasingly unclear.

Japan and Europe probably need no explanation at this point.

We need to talk about moving on so quickly, you carry on residues of unresolved hurt in your heart, we really need to talk

Life is more than just ticking the boxes. There's full love and wholesome friendships to be made.

I hoped that we'd sit with our emotions, and for most of us, not having a schedule can almost come off like a disease, but hey, you are here again. It will be fast soon, so you need to treasure the silence and the solitude of your own voice in your head

What Comes Next?

After a few hours of fitful sleep, the reality of the nightmare we're living shot me up from bed. I have no special knowledge, no guidance from above to share. Only analysis.

2) The greatest intellectual challenge we face is the enormity of the big lie. When even Mike Pence turns full Judas, and the Republican Majority Leader in the Senate rushes to as fast a certification of a false president as possible, you can feel how the fix is in. 100% Rigged.

3) Anyone who has followed the work of the great @SidneyPowell1 on behalf of @GenFlynn can find no surprise in how corrupt our judiciary is. We are witnessing a whole-of-government denial of our power as voters. In DC today, our voice is silenced. They don't need us, they think.

4) To my analytical eye, this cannot and shall not stand. I'm not predicting what will occur between now and January 20th, but truth is, I've stopped caring. It took me these several hours to realize. I am now over Election 2020. They have play acted it as theatre macabre.

5) A personal anecdote. I never voted, or even tried to, in any election until 2016. I felt the vote was a cheap trick played by parties that faked their differences but had none. I registered in 2016, in order to vote for Trump, the first attempted vote of my life.

Democrats have a lot of good ideas to help people fast, and visibly. They have good ideas for deepening democracy, like the "For The People Act." But if they let Senate Republicans filibuster everything, they will lose in 2022, and they will deserve it.

A lot of them understand this. “I’m going to do everything I can to bring people together,” Senator @RonWyden, who will chair the powerful Senate Finance Committee, told me. “but I’m not just going to stand around and do nothing while Mitch McConnell ties everyone up in knots.”

My 2020 started in November of 2019. Brother-in-law just dropped dead out of the blue. Then another brother-in-law came down with terminal heart conditions (he's still kicking, believe it or not!). We spent nearly 50 days on the /

road and living out of our car. I wanted to go to Iowa. I planned to help the campaign. Life did not cooperate.

Iowa and New Hampshire were tough to watch through windows. Twitter, Discord, and Slack only delivered bad news for a few weeks, and what little political hope I had /

gained through 2019 turned to sadness and rage. I held hope for a Yang cabinet position, though, as that is just how political favors are paid ... and Yang clearly did Joe a favor, however small it may have seemed at the time.

Then 'Rona.

Trump politicized a damn virus. /

I will never know what went on in that twisted little brain of his, but suddenly, every lesson we learned since the great Spanish Flu pandemic was out the window "to own the libs." Freedom, or something. This is my personal "picture of the year." It motivated nearly everything /

that I did after that point. I began preparing for the fall of the USA in earnest at that point.
