This open letter to the Springer Editors has been emailed to the editors in response to a chapter that included offensive language and highly problematic claims about deaf communities and signed languages

Thank you to all who contributed, gave feedback and signed, which are too many to be tagged š³! About 200 signatures. AND over the weekend AND during these apocarevolutiondemic days?!? Wow itās things like these that keep me working...
Along with sharing the open letter which I hope can be the start of a template of a more general letter that can be re-used in similar cases, which hopefully are few and far between, and thanking everyone who co-signed, I also wanted to highlight a few thingsā¦
Work w the signed language communities must be done by or w the communities themselves. I invite the authors to reach out to their local communities, such as work spearheaded by @alimchandani, https://t.co/jkTED650jx, an accessible Resource & Innovation Centre of the Deaf, India
There are tons of resources about doing work with signed language communities as well as discussion about how such work should be led by the communities themselves. To start with @SLLS ethics statement (https://t.co/S0qaWCeOwJ). (ASL sign "community" from https://t.co/LaJSCNWSPr)

At this point, the countries with most genomic data to analyze spread of the variant virus belonging to https://t.co/ImaHU6Jxdv B.1.1.7 lineage or @nextstrain clade 20I/501Y.V1 are the UK, Denmark and the USA. Here I compare growth rates of B.1.17 across these countries. 1/13
Working from @GISAID data, the UK has 18776 genomes, Denmark has 6089 genomes and the USA has 3093 genomes from specimens collected after Dec 15, 2020. Here, I'm looking at daily genomes with collection dates up to Jan 6 that were not pre-screened by "S dropout". 2/13
For the UK, we can see a steady increase in the frequency of sequenced variant viruses belonging to the B.1.1.7 lineage, reaching ~70% frequency at the end of December. Solid line is a 7 day sliding window average. 3/13
We can fit a logistic growth model to the frequency of B.1.1.7 in the UK data to estimate the rate of frequency increase through time. 4/13
And following @erikmvolz et al (https://t.co/l2ElhJVk8b) we can convert from a measured frequency growth rate to an estimate of increased transmissibility by assuming a particular generation time, which I take to be between 5 days and 6.5 days. 5/13

I don't talk much about my time in care because over a decade since I left care and it just hurts to. But the last few days I've seen a bunch of stuff about the review and this thread attempts to answers some of the questions...this is my response to Josh's answers
There have been a bunch of questions about the review over the weekend. Here\u2019s my best go at answering ones that have been asked by a few people..

Let's discuss how little you actually understand about economics and energy.
The first thing to understand is that energy is not globally fungible. Electricity decays as it leaves its point of origin; itās expensive to transport. There is a huge excess (hydro) in many areas.
In other words, it can also be variable. It's estimated that in Sichuan there is twice as much electricity produced as is needed during the rainy season. Indeed, there is seasonality to how Bitcoin mining works. You can see here:
Bitcoin EXPORTS energy in this scenario. Fun fact, most industrial nations would steer this excess capacity towards refining aluminum by melting bauxite ore, which is very energy intensive.
You wouldn't argue that we are producing *too much* electricity from renewables, right?
"But what about the carbon footprint! ITS HUGE!"
Many previous estimates have quite faulty methods and don't take into account the actual energy sources. Is it fair to put a GHG equivalent on hydro or solar power? That would seem a bit disingenuous, no?
Well that's exactly what some have done.

Let's discuss the environmental cost of bitcoin. Because despite all the push for sustainable and green investment in the tech sector, there's a giant smoldering Chernobyl sitting at the heart of Silicon Valley which a lot of investors would prefer you remain quiet about. \U0001f9f5 (1/)

Keeping the inauguration outdoors in DC despite the ongoing threat is having a huge effect on the hundreds of thousands of people who, yes, actually LIVE in this largely Black city, and I feel like thatās not getting enough attention.
A thread. 1/x
2/ Violent white supremacists are coming (back) to town. Last week, 3 Black women were attacked by Trumpers.
āThis time thereāll be way more cops though!ā
Well, last week there were cops too. **All 3 women were arrested while the attackers were
3/ Black people have known forever that law enforcement forces attract white supremacists.
And DC streets are now absolutely crawling with them. There are over 20,000 troops here.
Itās traumatic.
4/ The insurrectionists will not only be armed with guns, they will be maskless and doing shit like this:
[Source: @carstensenpol https://t.co/c3PQ2nTGpF]
5/ DC organizers like @DMVBlackLives @ShutDown_DC and mutual aid groups like @ServeYourCityDC are working around the clock to:
-drive unhoused people to safer areas
-distribute PPE
-demand that @airbnb + hotels #DontHostHate
-prep and supply medics
-and so, so much more

As someone who's spent, conservatively, thousands of hours reporting on and thinking about Seth Rich, Fox News, and conspiracy theories, the timing of the settlement highlighted in @benyt's new column doesn't infuriate me as much as the substance of it 1/x
What's infuriating is the absence of any contrition, apology, or remediation by Fox, especially @seanhannity.
As I've reported, Hannity arguably did more than anyone else to amplify the baseless, discredited, and cruel conspiracy theories about Seth. 2/x
.@seanhannity hyped it on multiple nights on his Fox show, on his radio show, and on Twitter. We're talking about a combined potential audience here of ~tens of millions of people.~
Imagine one of the loudest voices in TV saying the following about your dead brother or dead son:
Even after https://t.co/jg1xOw4YqF retracted its original story about Seth and WikiLeaks, Hannity kept hammering away.
āAll you in the liberal media,ā he said on his radio show, āI am not https://t.co/YVoDTvSQbr or https://t.co/jg1xOw4YqF. I retracted nothing.ā 4/x
Only when Aaron, Seth's brother, pleaded with Hannity and one of his producers, Porter Berry, did Hannity back down.
Even then, he didn't retract or apologize.
Instead he said: āOut of respect for the familyās wishes, for now, I am not discussing this matter at this time.ā 5/x
