Ten tips for writing your research proposal

1. Follow the instructions!

Read and conform to all instructions found on the council website. Make sure that your proposal fits the criteria of the competition.

2. Break down your proposal into point form before writing your first draft.

Based on the total length of the proposal, decide whether you will have headings/subheadings and what they will be (e.g., Introduction, Background Material, Methodology, and so on).

These headings can be selected based on the advice given in the specific award instructions. For each section, lay out in point form what you will discuss.

3. Know your audience.

Describe your research proposal in non-technical terms.

Use clear, plain language and avoid jargon.

Make sure your proposal is free of typographic and grammatical errors.

Remember that, at every level, adjudication committees are multi-disciplinary and will include researchers in fields other than your own.

1/10: I have a few big passions: Photography, Art, Music, Travel and Wine. These 5 interests pretty much sum up what I am about, where I make my money, and where I spend my spare time and wages

It has been 25 days since we left the EU. Here's a summary of how it is going for me:

2/10: Photography: Nikon have completely halted shipments of stock to the UK. This includes orders already paid for and also spare parts, meaning existing cameras cannot be fixed by authorised repairers either. Thankfully I shoot Canon mostly

3/10: Canon have announced Brexit complications have slowed shipments and that prices will have to be increased to the consumer to cover the bureaucratic paperwork. Sony and Fujifilm will likely follow suit soon

4/10: Art: As I look to open Lux Gallery this spring, I had earmarked some fantastic European artists to represent. I had already made contact with and agreed terms in principle with. New red tape means I will now be restricted to representing British artists only.

5/10: Music: Some of my favourite music I listen to comes from the continent. Musicians have been worthy beneficiaries from the Visa-free movement act, allowing EU and British musicians to tour easily across the music scene. Of course this benefitted British musicians even more

Would you run for your life or just stand on the beach as a gigantic tsunami rushed towards you?

You’d run, right? Don’t be so sure.

During the Boxing Day Tsunami, many vacationers just stood on the beach and watched as the ocean receded into a monstrous wave...

The locals knew better. They ran as hard as they could. But some of the foreigners stood on the beach, stared in amazement, and were engulf in a deadly mass of water.

Why didn’t they run? Why did they just stand there like a bunch of idiots?

Because tsunamis weren’t a normal part of life in their country. They knew that tsunamis existed and that they happened in this part of the world. They, however, had never seen one. So they underestimated its danger and were slow to take actions.

This has a name: normalcy bias.

“A normalcy bias is a psychological state of denial people enter in the event of a disaster, as a result of which they underestimate the possibility of the disaster actually happening, and its effects on their life and property..."

"...Their denial is based on the assumption that if the disaster has not occurred until now, it will never occur.”

Huge portions of the American church are underestimating and therefore under-reacting to the disaster that is racing our way.

What disaster do I speak of?

I've taught thousands of people make smart decisions without getting lucky.

Here is a thread on 5 of the biggest reasons we fail to make effective decisions.

1. We’re unintentionally stupid

We like to think that we can rationally compute information like a computer, but we can’t. Cognitive biases explain why we made a bad decision but rarely help us avoiding them. Better to focus on these warning signs something is about to go wrong.

Warning signs you’re about to do unintentionally something stupid: You’re tired. You’re emotional, in a rush, distracted, operating in a group, or working with an authority figure.

The rule: Never make important decisions when you’re tired, emotional, distracted, or in a rush.

2. We solve the wrong problem.

The first person to state the problem rarely has the best insight into the problem. Once a problem is thrown out on the table however, our type-a problem solving nature kicks in and forget to ask if we’re solving the right problem.

Warning signs you’re solving the wrong problem: You let someone else define the problem for you. You’re far away from the problem. You’re thinking about the problem at only one level or through narrow lenses.

The rule: Never let anyone define the problem for you.

As I lie here awake having a mild panic attack about the coming days in the US, I’m remembering that just this spring I found out one of my new mom friends was a Q conspiracy theorist. It came as a complete shock. 1/

I was FLOORED. I’m pretty open about my politics. Many moms and I chatted regularly after school about the stress of a Trump presidency or how much we loved Harris. She’d sat at my kitchen table and agreed with me on values. But this was 🤯 rhetoric 4/

At first I asked if she meant to send that video, and she confirmed she did. So I replied that I was a democrat and didn’t see how that message was overly positive. She told me she was “sad for you” that “you’re not willing to listen to the whole message.” 5/

Reading helps a person to know thyself.
Reading allows you to write better and the most important thing is it increases your IQ.
Readings also improve your thoughts.

4) Workout

If you need a healthy body, a healthy mind
Lift some weights

It will help you in many ways:

We’ve been taught to not say anything if we have nothing nice to say, so sometimes avoid talk of negativity.

Folks are more prone to act to avoid loss than seek gain so don’t be afraid to talk about dangers.

Behavioral tip: Keep it simple.

Excessive information leads to decisional paralysis.

Shoppers were more likely to buy when fewer food samples were offered.

Keep meetings uniform in focus and simple.

Behavioral tip: Put the client in control.

People are far more likely to follow through on a behavior when they’ve chosen it. Holds true experimentally in everything from eating veggies to doctor satisfaction.

Give two equally attractive alternatives and let them choose.

Behavioral tip: Make the desired behavior consistent with the user’s idealized identity.

How to break old cycles and access our divine sovereignty

To break those old negative cycles humanity has been trapped in for eternities, we heal and ground ourselves to become as solid as a rock, breaking all incoming waves and moving onto new paths of sovereignty and grace.

Humanity has been inside a narrow infinite loop of pain, trauma, hurt, unconsciousness and dependency which has been repeating over and over again, like a broken record constantly replaying the same dull 8 seconds of a song.

It goes like this: We carry pain and trauma inside of us but instead of focussing inwards, facing our traumas with love and courage, we decide to unconsciously projecting our darkness onto the outside world.

This perpetuates the negative cycles in the first place, as we continue to see our problems in others around us. The question is, how to break free?

Imposter Syndrome 101

What if, I’m not good enough? What if, I try it and fail? What if, I speak up and say something dumb? Surely, I’m out of my league here.

Sound familiar? That annoying inner-voice is more common than you may think.

Here’s Imposter Syndrome 101...

1/ First, what is it?

Imposter syndrome is a psychological phenomenon in which a person doubts their skills, talents, or accomplishments and has a persistent fear of being exposed as a fraud.

Essentially, you attribute your success to dumb luck and/or believe it is undeserved.

2/ A pair of psychologists, Suzanna Imes & Pauline Clance, first noted this phenomenon in the 1970’s while observing 178 high-achieving women.

Inexplicably, the women had convinced themselves they were not that smart, instead they had simply fooled anyone who thought otherwise.

3/ Initially, Imes & Clance believed this ‘imposter’ feeling was exclusive to women.

They theorized that since women were (wrongly) stereotyped as less capable at the time, these high-achievers rationalized their accolades by concluding it was all fake or perceived.

4/ In the time since researchers have established imposter syndrome can affect us all.

And, as many as 7 out of 10 of us have our own internal struggles with this self-defeating belief system.

As it turns out, high performers by their very nature are prone to imposter feelings.

I've heard the phrase, "We don't need a tech lead", from a number of engineers in my career. My response to this 👇

Firstly, it almost always sounds like "We don't need a *stinkin'* tech lead", which isn't very helpful

When I ask why don't need a tech lead, I'm offered examples which sound reasonable such as, "We are senior engineers and can solve problems," or "We don't need to be told what to do," or, "We're an agile team."

Their answers seem to indicate that either they don't fully understand what a tech lead does, or they give examples of bad tech leads

If I had a bad tech lead, maybe no tech lead would be better too 😅
