A Circle of Competence is the set of topic areas that align with a person's expertise.

If the entire world of information were to be expressed in a circle, an individual's Circle of Competence is the small sub-circle that represents their expertise.

The idea surfaced in the 1996 BH annual letter.

"You don’t have to be an expert on every company...you only have to be able to evaluate companies within your circle of competence. The size of that circle is not very important; knowing its boundaries, however, is vital."

A Circle of Competence is built over time.

It is built through experience, reading, dedicated study, and effort.

It is dynamic, not static.

It can expand as you deepen your knowledge in new areas. It can contract if you fail to nurture your existing areas of expertise.

To engage this mental model in your life, there are two key processes to go through:

(1) Identify what falls within your circle
(2) Identify the boundaries of your circle

(1) is all about figuring out what you know, while (2) is about humbly admitting what you don’t.

There's growing willingness to acknowledge the ways in which Trump's work of building and clinging to power resemble Hitler's. Good.

But this week the history that keeps flashing in my mind isn't Nazi Germany, it's pre-WWII Japan's May 15 Incident.

Japan after WWI was a two-party parliamentary constitutional democracy. The government functioned reasonably well into the 30s, weathering the depression better than its peers in the US and Europe. 2/

But a right-wing anti-democratic cancer took root in the lower ranks of the Japanese military. This cancer led to Japan's invasion of Manchuria in 1931 and the assassination of a former cabinet minister in 1932. 3/

Then came the May 15 Incident in 1932. A group of young, low-ranking military officers and cadets launched a coup attempt and assassinated the prime minister. But the coup failed, and they turned themselves in and were tried for treason. 4/

The trial of the May 15 Incident perpetrators has come to be recognized as a key event in the disintegration of Japan's constitutional government and its descent into totalitarianism. 5/

Christianity and islam may be the largest religion of today’s world but Sanatan dharm has the largest religious monument in the world in the form of Angkor wat. It is situated in combodia and spread across over 400 acres / 1.6 km².

It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, which encouraged an international effort to save the complex.
It was originally built as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu. In Khmer, the Cambodian language, Angkor means "city" and Wat means "temple grounds".

So Angkor Wat means "Temple City". Its original name was Vrah Vishnuloka or Parama Vishnuloka, meaning the sacred dwelling of Vishnu in Sanskrit.
But, it gradually turned into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century & is still used for worship today.

Angkor Wat was initially designed and constructed in the first half of the 12th century, during the reign of Suryavarman II, as the king’s state temple and capital city. It was built without the aid of any machinery, as there was no machinery available at that time.

Evidence for these dates comes in part from inscriptions, which are vague, but also from the architectural design and artistic style of the temple and its associated sculptures.

I'll be talking about a problem that most of us deal with in the modern world.

Dopamine imbalance.

"Why cook a healthy meal when I can just Uber Eats?"

"Why go meet girls and have real sex when I can just jerk it to porn?"

"Why do meaningful work when I can just hop on social media, create "content" and get validation in form of likes/retweets?"

"Why level up in life, when I can just hop on Runescape and get to level 99 in all skills?"

Now, logically speaking, these questions make no sense.

The reasons as to why you'd do the first instead of the second are obvious...

But, your brain works backward.

The only question your brain asks is "How can I satisfy this desire as quickly as possible with the least effort possible?"

Lol I love the internal conflict that America has with holding white people accountable as a group and individual. The storyline shouldn’t be Trumps response!! His lack of response is sinister when the real storyline is that he incited and his people funded the shit.

The Republican Party doesn't understand the situation it is in. The blowback for what happened on January 6th has only begun. There is no way any politician or political organization even remotely connected to the incident can come out of this with their reputations intact. 1/

The smart ones are already trying to perform acts of contrition but even they are miscalculating. They are not going far enough. Not even close. 2/

I’m not talking about how it might be a little more difficult to do fundraising in the future. I’m talking about fraternal organizations expelling members; professional credentials being revoked; companies cutting business ties; forced resignations from positions of authority. 3/

When the 'Moon' subject shows up, I always think about the mythology of this celestial object, and also about the differences between languages to refer to this object.

To be exact, what I really think is: why the hell "the moon" is a masculine word in German (der Mond)?
