Much of left discourse fixates on fascism. Some use "fascism" to mean any right-wing govt, anything bad about govt, or sometimes just "bad thing."
But even those who are more precise fixate on it, which leads them to search for parallels to historical cases and fascist theory

Instead of asking questions like "closer or farther from a free society?" or "how strong are these institutions?," the fixation on fascism leads to "how much does this resemble 1920s-30s Italy or Germany?" and "how close is this to that scholar's description of fascism?"

But fixating on the danger of a fascist takeover in America misses the more salient threat of democratic backsliding.
Simplifying a bit, fascism features strong institutions to impose its vision on society while democratic backsliding features weakening institutions.

So some lefties say Bush was worse than Trump because Bush created DHS after 9/11 while Trump tried to duck responsibility with COVID rather than use it to seize power like an American Reichstag fire.

Can we talk about remote learning for a minute?? So, we've been doing this since March. Which means that every teacher & school staff member is now an expert in what works/doesn't work far above every single district bureaucrat or politician anywhere. They have ZERO experience.

So...what are we seeing?? (Keep in mind I teach 1st-3rd)

1) Whole group lessons should be kept to a minimum. Some community building, announcements, maybe a quick read aloud. That's it. Small groups & 1:1 instruction is far more effective.

2) Less is more. Teaching through a screen presents unique problems. Tech issues, not being able to see student work in real time...Teaching ONE concept thoroughly with practice is so much better than more complicated work.

3) Reduce Screen time. I mean, duh. But seriously on this one. Doing RL should not mean staring at a screen all day. Quick, targeted lessons in small group/1:1 settings, then allow choice in follow-ups to practice. And the indep work MUST be work than can be done without help!

4) I'll repeat this one: Less is more. Shorter school days, more breaks, targeted small group/indiv lessons works best. The push for RL to mimic the pre-pandemic in-person school day is absolutely ridiculous.

You can always keep track of things like your money and solve certain real-life problems by putting things in an equation and then resolving them.

Knowing the algebra is something that people should do to achieve it to find a good job and for success in college, as well as life. Learn mathematics such as algebra and arithmetic now because as time passes, it becomes more difficult to learn things.

Let's start with the simple things.

1. Keeping up-to-date on all things software-related on the machine should be paramount.

Not just operating system updates though.

Software updates for things like word processing programs, music players, email clients, etc.

Kernel and BIOS updates for the machine itself.

If you want to check for the newest BIOS update, look at your computer hardware, visit the vendor's site, and they will have BIOS downloads available, as well as the date they became available.

Keep in mind, some updates on the BIOS itself aren't always necessary.

If the vendor recommends "Not updating if stability isn't a problem, then don't do it"

2. Next, let's talk about things that may communicate over the local network or within a short proximity, such as Bluetooth, airdrop, etc.

If you're not using them, turn them off.

Airdrop is especially troublesome because often I'll be at an airport and see dozens of individuals who have airdrop enabled. I recommend setting it to 'Contacts only' unless you're intending to pass a file to someone close to you.

🧵 So today we’ve got the Government’s vision for online harms legislation. It’s a landmark day for all of us who’ve worked for this for years. Some quick early (personal!) thoughts:

This is a systemic Duty of Care, with a requirement to risk assess - regularly - for reasonable foreseeable harms and to act on them. Supported by Codes but that serve as guardrails, not a prescriptive checklist

There’s a broad requirement on all services to tackle illegal content and to take measures to protect children. Worried that age assurance may be expected to do a lot of heavy lifting instead of proper moderation for legal but harmful, but we’ll see

The biggest weakness: enforcement measures. Criminal sanctions & named persons have deference value - that’s why industry pushed back strongly. But not for at least 2 years and even then only covering failure to comply with the regulator. If Govt thinks this is really enough...

Investigatory powers are OK (particularly pleased to see the inclusion of skilled persons reviews 😉). But the balance between investigatory powers and duties isn’t where it needs to be to drive culture change
