What happens on the day after Section 230 is repealed? I'm going to prognosticate a bit in today's Section 230 thread. The tl;dr is that we'll likely see a lot less speech, especially if the speech even borders on being controversial.

Recall that Section 230's core immunity says that platforms shall not be treated as the publishers of third-party content. So unless an exception applies, a social media site, for instance, cannot be successfully sued for a user's post.

The user who posted it always could be sued, but not the platform. This provides platforms with great flexibility to set their own moderation standards.

Recently, many people have criticized platforms for preferring particular political viewpoints in these moderation standards, and for not being very transparent about how they develop and implement those standards.

We can set those arguments aside for another day (basically every day for the rest of my life). What I want to talk about right now is how moderation would change on the day after Section 230 is repealed.

Since the day Sarah Palin called white conservatives “Real Americans,” I have been vociferously warning people about the danger of allowing that mindset to flourish & ossify.

What happened yesterday was the tantrum of people who believe they are the “real” Americans because they

are white, and that their will should always prevail for that very same reason.

The correlative to that is that all other Americans are “fake”
or “fraudulent,” and that our will is of no consequence.

This mindset in the right is what lead to everything, including Wednesday’s

sedition-fest.

It is this mindset that justifies voter suppression, gerrymandering, unequal policing and justice standards, ignoring Congressional acts from a Dem majority, and insisting that votes from black communities be thrown out.

At base, it’s white supremacist having a

meltdown hissy fit because they cannot accept that they aren’t the majority, and likely never will be again.

Their only gambit at power is to destroy the very concept of majority rule, and to enshrine control by the racist minority.

They worship Trump because he was the first

politician who made clear he would do whatever it takes to make that shift occur, mostly out of selfishness and personal greed, not zealous philosophical accord, but the result was the same.

They love Trump because he is their flavor of both ruthless and immoral.

“Jim Crow” originated from the name of a black character from early- and mid- 19th century American theater. Crows are black birds, and “Crow” was the surname of a stock fictional black character, who was almost always played onstage by a white man, wearing blackface makeup.

Due to the prevalence of this character, "Jim Crow" became a derogatory term for people of African descent. From the late 1800s, the name came to signify the social and legal segregation of black Americans from white —a synonym for racial segregation, particularly in the South.

The laws were created by white southerners to enforce racial segregation across the South from the 1870s to the 1960s. Under the system, “whites only” and “colored” signs proliferated across the South at water fountains, restrooms, bus waiting areas, theaters, pools, and schools.
