Travelogue: Of Abacha, Okpa & Other Things I Saw On A Road Trip From Anambra To Enugu

I believe two things give people great exposure- reading and travelling. I love both. Anytime I get into a new or unfamiliar environment, I like to explore the place.

 I make friends with people in that environment- especially cab drivers. I met Somto and he was just perfect for me. He knows the road but even more, he knows the interesting places and is a good conversationalist.
I jumped into his vehicle and off we went from Agulu where I stayed. Agulu has the best hotel I have stayed so far in this country. I'm not saying this lightly at all. The Golden Tulip Hotel in Agulu owned by the Anambra State Government is a masterpiece of hospitality.
Located on the banks of Agulu Lake, the landscape is a beauty to behold. If you love nature like me, you don't need to go any further. Just looking at the hills and the lake will give you immense pleasure. The view from my room was simply breathtaking.
That hotel is a piece of hidden treasure. It's a beautiful getaway from the hustle and bustle of Lagos. The hotel was formally commissioned in January this year though operations started last September.
With a few additions such as a spa and a more varied menu, you have a perfect spot for a holiday. Agulu is the hometown of Peter Obi and the late Dora Akunyili.
As Somto drove away from Agulu, I pointed out how beautiful it will be for the hotel to get a few speedboats for lodgers and revellers to explore Agulu Lake. It was then he told me about the crocodiles in the lake. "Agu" actually means crocodile in Igbo.
He told me how a crocodile usually comes out and people park their cars to watch it. The Agulu people worship crocodiles so they don't kill it. I believe there should be a way to explore that Lake while still respecting age-old traditions. That lake should be a money-spinner.
Somto told me about the traditions of various communities in Anambra. As we passed through Nise, he said the people there worship snakes just like the natives of Amawbia. They don't kill snakes even if they find them in their homes.
They can gently pick them with sticks or even beg them 'biko, go away'. Snakes don't attack people there also. In Nimo, it's the python that is worshipped. In Awka, it's the monkey.
As we drove into Awka, I observed it's actually a small town. We passed in front of the Governor's Lodge at Amawbia Awka- a very expansive piece of real estate with walls painted white. A part of the road was demarcated and devoted solely to vehicles going to the Governor's Lodge
We followed the old Ring Road and soon we were at Agu Awka. A short while after, we got to Amansea- a boundary town between Anambra and Enugu. It's at this place where you will see a huge signage "Goodbye From Anambra State". Anambra has a good network of roads.
Somto spoke very highly of Peter Obi and credited him with linking all the towns and communities. In his words, "Peter Obi did everything". I saw an abandoned mall which he told me Peter Obi started. He said a new one was built in Onitsha. I think that project should be completed
Awka can take a befitting mall too as the State Capital. Unizik is on that Amansea road.
We saw an accident immediately after the bridge coming into Enugu. It happened shortly before we got there. It seemed there were no casualties. Ugwuoba is the first town in Enugu. It's part of Oji River LG. We passed the old road because the new road is bad.
I understand the new road is a Federal Road and it was Gburugburu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the Governor of Enugu State that repaired the old road. I learnt it used to take up to 3 hours to drive from Enugu to Anambra before because of the bad road.
Almost everywhere you turned, there is a signage "Gburugburu is working". I wonder when we will get rid of these primitive concepts. I observed Abacha sold on the road side as we drove on that express.
Abacha is from cassava and is mixed with oil and pepper to make a delicacy that the Igbos love. I also saw people selling okpa. I understand that Enugu's okpa is the sweetest.
As we approached Oji River, I saw the Leprosy Settlement Centre to the left. I also saw the power station and was told that the electricity in Anambra is powered by Oji River.
As we drove a bit further and got to Naachi, Somto told me about a healing stream sometime ago on that road and how people travelled from far to fetch the water, thereby causing great traffic on that road.
The story was that a nomadic herdsman who was partially blind came across a stream and was healed immediately he drank the water. Trust people to spin a business around it as the water was sold in gallons on that road. This just reinforces how we are superstitious as Africans.
One of the questions someone asked me in Anambra was how true the issue of using pants for ritual is. I was embarassed to say the least. As we drove, Somto blasted a mixtape that featured Olamide, Phyno, Wizkid, Davido and others. He seemed to like Olamide's "Poverty die die".
I asked him who he thought was better: Wizkid or Davido? His answer was Wizkid. But he said each Davido song is always a hit.
We saw another accident at Naachi- a lone one. From Naachi, we got to Udi. Sullivan Chime, a former governor, is from Udi. Udi is famous for its bush meat. Somto told me the story of Sullivan's deputy that was impeached for raising fowls at the Deputy Governor's lodge.
We laughed as I remembered that incident. Somto believes that Sullivan also performed well as Governor. I saw the Road Safety Academy at Udi. A short while after, we got to the road that led to 9th Mile- a major road which further leads to Nsukka and onwards to Abuja.
We took the detour that led to Enugu.

We passed through Agbudu Kingdom and got to Udi hills - a road that is very slopy and windy. One had to slow down on this portion of the road. Udi hills road is risky at night.
Robberies and accidents take place regularly due to the topography. However, the view is beautiful as you look at the surrounding mountains and hills. We got to the 4-Corner road which leads to PH.
Somto showed me the road that led to Agbani where Chimaroke Nnamani, a former governor, is from. The Law School is around there. Esut (Enugu State University) is also at Agbani.
I was told that Enugu actually means "on top of hill". Water is difficult to get in Enugu due to its topography. Enugu is known for its coal. Water tankers make money due to the scarcity as only the area around 9th mile has sufficient water.
We travelled on the Enugu- Abakaliki express. Out of all the South East States, I think it is only Ebonyi I've not been to. I've been to Imo, Abia, Anambra and Enugu. I observed that Enugu has good roads also. We saw the Independence Layout along our way.
As we approached the airport, I saw Anammco again. The last time I was in Enugu, I remember asking if nothing could be done to resuscitate what used to be the pride of the East. It still looks like it's dead.
That factory was famous for producing motor parts. I saw the international airport under construction. We finally arrived at Akanu Ibiam Airport and I had to disembark.
Somto was a very good guide. He even helped me with my luggage. His fee was very reasonable. I told him I will always call him when I'm in town. I had a great time.

Sometimes in October, I received a call from a former client who had been out of the country for almost a year.

He is not a Nigerian but had just secured an appointment with a company. His first statement was “Bayo, I need to pick your brain on this because with you I know where I stand. I know you’ll not deceive me”.

After our discussion, he told me he had already informed his Chairman that their banking relationship had to come to me. I’ve signed it on since.

I’ve had cause to reflect over his statement many times since then. Here was a man whom sometimes I had very difficult conversations with. I’ve had to tell him no when I knew his requests were not possible. Sometimes, the relationship was stormy.

I never fail to tell my colleagues that the major currency for transaction is integrity and this will only be sustained in an atmosphere of trust. Never lie to customers in order to make a sale.

The Law of The Stretch

I had become dissatisfied with my career at that point. Having started my career in Ibadan and having lived there all my life, I felt there was more. I remember how I felt there was a void within. Outwardly, things looked okay but inwardly, I was a mess.

I knew that if I wasn’t careful, I would just settle into a comfortable zone and that may just be the end of my career. Everyone loved Ibadan- the cost of living was low and I had almost everything, at least compared to those within my immediate space.

One of the greatest mistakes you can make is to benchmark your life by those within your immediate space or circle of influence. You will think you’re making progress until you get out and see others who will challenge you. And that was what I decided to do.

I saw a vacancy for a role in Lagos and I applied. Up till then, I had never worked in Lagos- save for a few trainings, attachments and banking school.

When I got the role, it was a major stretch for me. I didn’t have a place to stay so I had to ‘squat’ with a friend for 6 months until I could pull resources together to get a studio apartment.

I got there as they were opening the door at 8am yesterday Friday. I wanted to send copies of my books to @Rovingheights at Surulere.

After putting the books on their scale to measure the weight, I was given a bill of N30,000. I filled the accompanying form and was about to pay when the lady at the front desk of this courier company told me that the books would be delivered on Monday. I couldn’t believe my ears

You mean I’m sending books from Lekki to Surulere and it won’t get there next day? And I’m going to pay N30,000 for waiting for that long? Friday to Monday?

I took back my books and left. I checked google for another courier company closest to me. I saw one in Victoria Island and drove there. The lady at the front desk gave me a bill of N16,000 for next day delivery. The time was 9am and I insisted it should be delivered same day.

She called her supervisor in my presence and I heard her supervisor say I had to pay twice the amount if it will be delivered same day. That’s N32,000 from Victoria Island to Surulere.

Leadership: Think Of How You Can Add Value & Other Lessons 

Exactly 5 years ago, it was my last day at work at my former organization and I sent out a valedictory mail to my team. It was a truly emotional experience.

I hereby share that mail I sent 5 years ago. How time flies.

My dear South West 1 Team,

This is a very emotional moment for me as I know goodbyes are not easy. I want to take this time out to sincerely appreciate each and every one for your support during my brief sojourn leading the team.

I call it a sojourn because life is a journey and not a destination. We will all never 'arrive' in the real sense of it and people must move on at certain periods in their lives. That is exactly what I'm doing. You've all been part of my life just like I have been part of yours.

I'm particularly delighted and it is my sincere joy to note that together, we have made some progress. We are not exactly where we want to be but then we are no longer where we were when I assumed leadership of this Region a short while ago.

So, let me leave you with a few 'take-aways' as I take my bow:

1. MYTHS ARE MEANT TO BE SHATTERED

When I resumed in the South West, the fashionable reason for the poor performance was the excuse that the State Governments were owing salaries.

Angry Letter To The Nigerian Youth (2)- There Is Opportunity In Adversity

My dear Nigerian Youth,

I'm still on your case. I'm not about to relent so soon because you represent immense potential and you sit on a gold mine yet you know it not.

You account for at least 43 percent of Nigeria's population. You are over 72 million strong. Unfortunately, what is a blessing is turning to be a curse. Your situation brings a scripture to mind: man that is in honour, and understands not, is like the beasts that perish.

You still wonder why I'm miffed? I sat across one of you- a young lady- today and listened to her tale. She had spent 2 years living in Dubai and slaved away for a real estate company. After 2 years, she's back to Nigeria- broken and penniless.

She regaled me with stories of how more than 75 percent of her income went to rent and she couldn't even afford a decent accommodation. She had to 'collabo' with two other ladies to rent a studio apartment. But now she couldn't stay in Nigeria anymore.

She complained so much about the road and heat that I wondered if she was born in Dubai! She also complained of lack of capital when I asked why she couldn't settle down to do something in Nigeria. I told her no one has 'capital' problems but what people have is 'idea' problem.

I used to work 14+ hour days and have a 'no days off' mentality. This year I cut that shit off and focused on building a career and life of quality. The results are higher income, more time to enjoy life, schedule on my terms + stronger relationships. Fuck your "hustle."

The reality is 99% of people's "hustle" is just them hustling themselves. Hustling yourself out of life and into a worker cog. The exact opposite of what you want to become when you're an entrepreneur. You're becoming the same system you sought to destroy.

To build a successful business it takes way more than just plain old hard work. I am a huge believer in American grit, not American hustle. You need hard work, but if that is all you can bring to the table, you have no place running a business.

People work hard because they believe in what they're doing or they feel they have to make it happen. I get that. We have families and people counting on us. But you are failing them all when you live in your office.

We are privileged in even being able to run a business. If you are lucky enough to do that, you owe it to yourself, your loved ones, and the people counting on you to do it the right way. Be healthy. Sleep. Live your life. Be more than your career. 🖤

Krishna and the False Vasudeva

Paundraka Vasudeva was a King mentioned in Bhagavatha Purana. He was friend of Jarasandha, the king of Magadha. He believed that he is Vasudeva Krishna.
Once Paundraka Vasudeva received a letter from Shishupala, stating that he wanted


protection from Krishna, because it was Rukmini's wedding and Shishupala thought Krishna would take away Rukmini.

Paundraka Vasudeva agreed and went to Vidarbha, the Kingdom of Shishupala, but failed to provide protection as Krishna took Rukmini away. Paundraka Vasudeva was


feeling sad. His Minister's cheered him.
They said that Paundraka Vasudeva was the real Vasudeva and Krishna is a cheater. Everyone started to believe this and soon Paundraka Vasudeva soon started to taunt Krishna by saying that Krishna was a cheater.
Paundraka Vasudeva then


challenged Krishna to a war and Krishna said that he would give Paundraka his Chakra and Gadha. Paundraka suspected some foul play and went to King of Kashi for his protection. In battlefield, Krishna came in front of Paundraka, and said that he would throw his Chakra and Gadha


to him. But, Krishna's throw was perfect that the Gadha hurled him to the Ground and the Chakra killed him.
Krishna soon killed king of Kashi with an arrow and his head went flying to Kashi.
Thus Victorious Krishna was recieved by people of Dwaraka.

Builder of many architectural marvels like the Kumbhalgarh Fort, an erudite scholar, a patron of arts, music, culture & a great warrior was the Great Maharana Kumbha. Yet we don't know much about him. Let's get to know him a little.


Maharana Kumbha was the undefeated King of Mewar from 1433-1468CE.He never lost any battles &kept Mewar out of the reach of Islamic Invaders till the time he was alive. Born on Makar Sakranti to Maharana Mokal & Saubhagya Devi, Rana Kumbha was only 13 when he ascended the throne.


His father was killed by his own relatives in a political conspiracy. He was a powerful King about 8ft tall &charismatic personality,a hardcore Hindu Rajput who could shed his life for Hindu honour without thinking twice.He was an ardent skillful warrior who never lost a battle.
