DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MUGHALS SULTAN- DHAVA AND MARATHAS GANIMI KAWA

A 🧵u must read

Sultan Dhava is a word for large scale battle

Here two armies will meet each other at a point prior to the battle with a huge manpower.

1/12

There will be battles at daybreak, rest in night, and the entire battle field will be felt like a game of chess between the opposing armies.

Here one unit attacks other unit and only strategy and numbers matter. Along with other factors such as technology.

2/12
These kinds of battle are great if two empires are similar in size or there is a seige battle on land forts and castles. ( but, it's not suitable for seiges if the castles are on hills or near water bodies, example failed seige of Ramsej)

3/12
All this is very dependent on logistics and strategy which is time consuming but very effective.

4/12
GANIMI KAVA - guerrilla warfare

Used initially by Maharana Pratap to recover his kingdom .

While in full scale battle the military would have state of the art armour and weapons, the guerrilla force has what's most easy to make yet effective like simple lightweight swords .
In fact Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj did not prefer maces or giant battle axes as it could slow down his soldiers.

This type of battle strategy is used when one empire is vastly superior to the other.

6/12
These includes destroying the supply chain, making logistics harder, attacking whenever the time is ripe be it day or night, using the espionage network to sow chaos in the populace of the enemy to increase their problems.

A Maratha warrior with less armour for easy movement👇
In ganimi kava even a single battalion which knew it's routes could do far more damage in the long run as compared to a full giant army.

The best thing about it is that it requires far less manpower than Sultan Dhava, and gets the job done.

8/12
As every small band is for itself, there is no need for soul crushing logistics in the mix.

But the problem is it takes a very long time to win.

For example Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is famous for his use of ganimi kava.

9/12
But it took him over 30 years to establish a full autonomous state amongst the enemy empires.

But when Bajirao Bhallad used the Sultan Dhava or Yudhniti, he was able to seize large swaths of lands with a string of victories.

10/12
Compared to an early Maratha warrior, you can clearly see very heavy armament which had now become staple for most of the core army.

It all boils down to how strong you are against your enemy along with how long is your plan of action.

11/12
Sultan dhava is great if you have good manpower and less time. Ganimi kava is when you can sacrifice your timescales in favour of safety for your warriors and long term effectiveness.
