Seruvandoor Shiva temple.
Seruvandoor is a tiny hamlet in Thiruvarur district, TN near Nannilam. In its eastern corner, there lies an ancient dilapidated Shiva temple which has history dating back at least 800 years old.

The ruins with broken mandapams, idols and arch at the entrance suggest that this temple structure must have been quite grand in its glorious past. It is said the original name of this village was Siruvandoor as Linga here was worshipped by a Vandu (beetle) before.
There are overgrown peepal trees over the entirely dilapidated structure. Fortunately the dieties Lingam, Ambal, Nandi, Balipeetam, Vinayakar, Bhairavar and Chandra moorthies are protected in a nearby tin shed.
The sthalapuranam suggests that a Gandharva by name Chitrasena was once cursed by sage Agasthya due to his over indulgence with Menaka and other Apsaras. It is here an Apsara did penance to relieve him of his curse. We can see a broken yet beautiful sculpture of that Apsara here.
We can see a dry temple pond to its east.
One way to save such heritage sites and holy abodes is to visit them. With influx of devotees, these temples would be taken care of by locals. Let us join hands to promote such less known wonders. #PromoteRuralTemples
