Collaboration Tax

Getting two or more product groups at a megacorp to collaborate on creating a seamless end user experience is the hardest problem in computer science.

(I am not joking)

Examples of Collaboration Tax:

Calendly exists because the Gmail team & Calendar team haven’t worked together on creating a more seamless experience for that use case.

Loom might succeed because the Gmail, Video, Meet teams at Google are probably too busy with their own goals.

The takeaway for startups:

If you can create meaningful value by seamlessly integrating features of two or more distinct Gorilla products, you will typically have a lot of runway before the Gorilla can get its act together and eliminate its Collaboration Tax.

Once a Gorilla’s product reaches massive scale (i.e. the denominator for its metrics gets very large), the pressure of OKRs & incentives will often force the Gorilla’s product teams to prioritize breadth of usage more than depth of usage.

THREAD: The four elements of writing style:

Pardon me while I open a wormhole into your brain and thrust style advice into it.

See, that’s an example of style.

I could have just said: "And now let’s learn about style."

Four elements of style I'll cover:

• Your voice
• Your presentation
• Engaging the senses
• Engaging the imagination

Part 1: Your voice

Ask your friends what it's like to talk with you.

Perhaps they’ll mention your:

• Tone of voice
• Sense of humor
• Eccentricities
• Viewpoints

Convey those traits in your writing, and readers will recognize your voice.

In other words, voice is not your choice of words. Voice is your unfiltered self.

How to outline articles:

A blend of @david_perell's process and SEO:

1/ David starts with a quote, a vague idea, or a concept that generates curiosity.

2/ Then, he searches inside his note-taking system for extracts and reflections related to the prompt.

These ideas come from his daily knowledge consumption.

3/ He then assembles extracts to create a narrative around a thesis.

An incomplete thesis will make a reader bounce. While the opposite makes them crave more of your content.

4/ Some of us never built a database.

To fix this, type your prompt into Google and examine the search results:

-People also ask
-Google autocomplete
-Image recommendations
-Related searches at the bottom

These will help you structure your post while following SEO practices.

5/ After creating an outline based on his notes, David rewrites sentences, words, and paragraphs from memory.

He adds personal anecdotes, analyzes ideas, and creates his narrative—A process he defines as POP writing.

You need to understand the box model. It’s the key to putting things where you want them to be.

- Everything on a web page is made up of boxes
- CSS let's you adjust the style and position of each box
- The most common “box” is called a div

Webflow lets you build visually👀, without code. Simply drag in components to build your site. Components include:

- Text
- Forms
- Images
- Video
- Buttons
- Divs (boxes to help position content where you want)

After dragging in a component, check the navigator. This is where the box model comes in.

You can see which components are within other components (inside other boxes) with indentations.

You can put as many components inside other components that you’d like.
