Next week is shaping up to be one hell of a week in 🇬🇧 politics

It all revolves around parliamentary sovereignty, Tory party shenanigans, and Johnson's need to survive and if that contradicts with doing the right thing

Bear with me - this is messy but important

1/12

Why will it be hellish?

We *know* that there will be a vote on Coronavirus Tier system on Tue 1 Dec, with the system to come into force from the end of 2 Dec

There *might* be a Brexit Deal at the start of next week as well, and Johnson having to OK it or not

2/12

Coronavirus first

I am not well placed to judge whether the Tier system is right (don't @ - reply me about that), but it's enough to say there are 3 grounds for critique
- do lockdowns work?
- does THIS lockdown system work?
- has my town/region been harshly treated?

3/12

Those are enough grounds for plenty of parliamentary opposition on the Tory benches, and on opposition benches too.

Labour could easily justify voting against in that some of the judgments on Tiers are not strictly based on the science

But what does voting *against* mean?

4/12

Were the vote lost, there would be little or no actual practical consequence regarding the Coronavirus restrictions - as discussed with Adam Wagner the government would almost certainly table Regulations using its emergency powers
I have some wild updates on yesterday's thread about @mattgaetz's floor speech about "antifa agitators" that may end up with the facial recognition company suing the Washington Times, which would be funny...

This morning, Buzzfeed interviewed XRVision, the facial recognition company mentioned in the Washington Times article who supposedly identified antifa at the capitol. They’re mad, because as I discussed yesterday, they actually identified neo-nazis.

And now there are attorneys issuing a demand for correction and apology, which is the first step in a defamation lawsuit.

But the Washington Times didn’t issue a correction or apology. Instead, this morning it first tried to change the headline from “antifa” to “extremists.”

By noon, the Washington Times just deleted the article.
When you want elected officials to hear your concerns, you are a domestic terrorist.

When they want to intimidate elected leaders from carrying out lawful processes, they are simply "Anti-Kavanaugh protestsers take over the Senate Office Bldg. atrium on Capital Hill." https://t.co/gqDMAxahaS

Trump put out a video telling the protesters to go home. Gets a comms cut, Twitter and Facebook timeout.

Did any prominent democrat tell the BLM rioters to stop burning shit down, or did they pour gas on it.

There was a coup alright, it's just not the one being reported.

Yes, and the GOP continues to play their role as outer party controlled opposition. Washington Generals doing what the Washington Generals

At this point we see clearly Trump never held power. There's a giant power vacuum in the US right now, he failed to fill it.

That vacuum isn't going away. Those 75M MAGA voters aren't going to disappear.

The crackdown to come will only inflame tensions. This is just beginning.

Months of burning cities, billions in property damage and looting. Politicians, celebs ran fundraisers to help them post bail. They executed a MAGA in Portland. Cops, politicians, military literally bent the knee to them.
Pundits: The fact that Ossoff and Warnock are unlikely to both win their elections means Joe Biden needs to court Republican votes rather than push a much-needed progressive agenda

*Ossoff and Warnock win handily*

Pundits: Ah. Nevertheless,

The only way political reporting in this country makes sense is if you understand that the almost universal, almost subconscious default assumption: that conservative white people are the protagonists of any story that's being told, no matter the facts of the story.

Just do the obvious and necessary good things and let the horrid evil people who hate good things squeal and cry about it forever.

I really need Democrats who will state the clear and obvious truth, which is that Republicans are our enemies, because they insist on attacking the very idea of a shared society and are more than happy to use violence to do it, which is the very definition of an enemy.

You can't make people who want to kill you not be your enemies even if you wish they'd be your friend.

They can stop trying to kill you, but until that happens they are your enemy, and acknowledging that fact isn't what makes that fact true.
