No objections from me to Labour voting for the deal - despite my now being very much a Starmer sceptic. There are multiple reasons why Labour should vote for it.

1. We left the EU at the end of January. Leave v Remain has been done since then. Finished.

Some people like to act as though it's not. Even, almost as though someone can wave a magic wand and turn the clock back 5 years. Nobody can.

No doubt the deal will be renegotiated by future governments; that's when rejoining might become a possibility. But it's years away.

And no doubt, too, the Tories will have plenty of shenanigans up their sleeves to achieve what many of them REALLY want. Which is when, memo to Starmer, we'll need an effective opposition!

But right now, it's just about moving on.

2. Starmer's approach is to contrast Labour's apparent competence with the Tories' staggering incompetence. And to appear like a government-in-waiting - which means 'the national interest'.

It's wearisome I know. But most of us on here are far more political than most people.

Most of the electorate do not think like you or me - and we're way past time to stop pretending that they do. Most of the electorate aren't very political at all - but they do want competence, and they don't trust parties they think are unpatriotic.

There is no scenario where Trump lets Biden steal the election.

There is no scenario where an elected official facilitates election fraud and gets re-elected.

There is no scenario where we accept this kind of tyranny as normal.

They stole the election again in Georgia because they don’t think they can truly get caught or lose. Broken machines, extended deadlines, blocked access to observers, sudden vote flip. They don’t care.

The way this ends is going o truly shock the world. It isn’t going to be trivial. It isn’t going to depend on Mike Pence.

- The new sick kids hospital has had many issues including the ventilation and has been pushed back numerous times. Imagine if it had been opened on time and we had been able to treat more covid patienst there reducing strain on our NHS?

- The drug related detahs in Scotland are the highest simce records began. After the SNP govt. cut drug rehabilitation services after being told in doing so would have such consequences. They set up a task force which didn’t meet for the first time until months after being set up

- The SNP keep saying that they need Drug Powers devolved to treat this as a health problem, not criminal. If it’s a health problem use the powers of health? Just a thought. However. As soon as they came into power numbers have increased. Funny that eh?

We don’t need more powers we just need to use the powers we have properly and fund rehab services properly to tackle this.
- The treatment time guarantee was enshrined in law at 100% of patients would recive treatment within 12 weeks. In 2019 it was only at 72%

The "center" of American politics is not a fixed point, it shifts over time. What is "the center" today would have been considered pretty far left in the 1990s. Likewise, what was the imagined "center" in the mid-1980s would have been considered pretty far right in the 70s.

One of Lincoln's skills as a politician was that he moved the center of American politics into an antislavery place, and he also evolved in his own thinking about slavery and race. Finding and helping to move "the center" is one (not the only) form of effective politics.

There is no such thing as a democratic political culture that lacks an imagined "center" and people who inhabit it. This is especially the case in a diverse and often fractious nation. The politics of persuasion is all about moving that imagined center in the direction you want.

Most of the people currently on the American far right are highly unlikely to move to the center, because their basic political commitments are hostile to America's multi-racial democracy. One task ahead is to prevent that segment of our political culture from growing.

How to do that is unclear. History shows that deplatforming can often work. History also shows that sometimes right wing radicals can gain fame and attention by presenting themselves as "martyrs" who've been persecuted by "elites." There's no iron clad formula.

We are now 5 days out from the most important election in the history of our country. I want to share a few quotes from previous Q drops that we have been given, in hopes of firing you up even more than you already are.

The current split we’re seeing in the Republican Party is not a sudden split of ‘consciousness’ or ‘doing what’s right’, but rather a split between two factions of their billionaire donors: Langone et al. vs. Mercers et al. 1/14

Policy-wise, these two groups agree on nearly everything, but there is a rift in strategy. One group funds & supports conspiracy theories, right-wing & white-supremacist extremist groups, etc.

They do so for two primary reasons: 2/14

First, people’s lives are in turmoil. Millions are food and housing insecure. Capitalist alienation & atomization is rampant. Our political system represents corporate interests & the 1% - leaving crumbs for everyone else. People are hurting. 3/14

Conspiracy theories & RW extremist groups speak to people’s pain, but rather than place blame where it belongs: capitalism, authoritarianism, racism, sexism etc. they deflect blame towards anything but the truth: immigrants, black & brown people, deep state, lizard people... 4/14

Billionaires support conspiracy theories because they keep people confused and angry at any boogeyman other than the TRUE cause of their pain & alienation: the very system that allows for Billionaires while peoples’ lives are falling apart. 5/14

Lots of ordinary Republicans are endorsing violence. We'd like that number to drop, but the precipitating causes deserve our focus even more than trying to persuade that violence is inappropriate. The main trouble is they trust & follow bad leaders. 1/

Lots of Rep leaders, led by the president & other extremists, encouraged direct action. That explicit behavioral leadership is the biggest risk for violence. We've seen other presidential violence effects when Trump has targeted individuals, spiking death threats against them. 2/

Related is the dangerous lie Trump and many Rep leaders have broadcast, claiming w/o a shred of credible evidence that the election was somehow fraudulent. @LilyMasonPhD & I found in Nov that the false belief that Dems cheated *doubled* Rep support for anti-Biden violence. 3/

Specifically: Reps supporting a military coup were 9% if no cheating & 16% if cheating belief, 8% vs. 14% for National Guard resistance by states, and 16% vs. 30% for ordinary citizens to prepare weapons to resist in their communities. Paired w/ action calls, that's bad. 4/

In Oct, we asked partisans if they trust their party's leaders to tell them the truth about the election results. 90% of Dems said prob or def yes, as did 87% of Reps. Notably, definitely was 54% for Dems but 32% for Reps. So some doubt there, but not enough. 5/
