2020, the year I found sobriety.

Just before midnight on December 31, 2019, alone on my couch with a free pour of Jameson in hand, I made a decision to quit drinking. Just until our second baby was born, she was due in February.

 What if I had to, you know, drive my partner to the hospital in the middle of the night and couldn’t because I was a little drunk? I was at least a little drunk every single day.
There were logistics to figure out this time, I would have to get our then 3 year old to a friend’s house. Someone to look after the dog. Go over the checklist. Make sure everything was in the hospital bags. Don’t forget the infant car seat.
I couldn’t just stop by saying so, I’d tried that before and couldn’t make it stick. I needed a plan, a script to follow.
I replaced my nightly ritual of drinking with learning fiddle tunes on the mandolin. Watching Netflix and scrolling through my phone were things to accompany my drinking. In about a week I was able to do things on the mandolin that I’d wished I could do for years. That felt good.
If we went somewhere, like to a friend’s house, bar or restaurant where I would be offered a drink, I had a script for that as well: soda water. No matter how I was asked the question or what was on offer, the answer was just, soda water.
You can feel like a real jerk going to someone’s house and asking for “sparkling water”, so I insist on calling it soda water. It’s the same thing as far as I can tell. If I’m in the mood for fun, I’ll call it “Club Soda”.
Whisper it to yourself with flirtatious eyes. Try it. There, now we’re having a good time!
My habit was formed on the road, alcohol just seemed to be every single place I went. For many years there was no transaction required for me to drink. Everywhere I went somebody had gotten cans and bottles of booze and put it on a table next to hummus and baby carrots.
In the early days I spent 6-10 months on the road each year. It was Saturday night every night. That was pretty fun for a while. Mostly I have toured all by myself though, and I grew pretty lonesome.
Last January I went to LA. Out for dinners and working lunches with my business partners. Meetings at bars. I had a great time. As I enjoyed my soda water, one thing I did notice was how they were drinking.
“He hasn’t touched that beer in 10 minutes.”

“Aren’t they going to order another round?”

“Is nobody going to drink that last drop of sake?!”

Why did I care? What was my problem? Oh.
When our baby arrived on February 5th, I held off a bit longer as we adjusted. It’s not easy to drink 3 fingers of whisky while an infant sleeps on you, wiping down the kitchen counter and using one clean, dry pinky to poke texts back and forth to your partner who is 10 feet away
We don’t talk anymore, but we text all the time. I like to pretend we’re dating.
Me: Miss you heart emoji

Her: get lundry frm basement

Me: Hot

Her: no cold delicate hang dry plz

Me: dance emoji

Her: quietly!!!!
Around the time I might have started up drinking again, our family went into pandemic lockdown. All my work was cancelled and without childcare I had absolutely zero minutes of solitude for writing and recording.
I’d also started to notice how much money I was saving by not drinking. In the face of an empty calendar and no income, I thought I better hold off until this whole thing passed in a month to six weeks. Hardy har har.
I was a mess. Uncontrollable fits of crying, expressing grief for the loss of my job that I love so much. I felt angry and isolated, depression sunk in.
I started thinking about how that 2pm, maybe even noon, happy hour would take the edge off. I looked forward to it. Even planned it a little bit in my mind, but I reluctantly kept kicking the can down the road.
We all have high hopes for this new year of 2021. In its early hours I’m taking some time for reflection and introspection. I’ve just realized that the first resolution I ever kept was a resolution I didn’t exactly mean to make.
I feel better, in general, than I did a year ago, despite the fact that so much remains uncertain. I’m in better physical shape. My singing voice, which was becoming increasingly hard to keep in tune, has returned. I don’t give up as easily.
I can also be more irritable, reactionary and less patient. I’m working on it. I’m working on a more enduring solution than the 5pm ‘screw it’ and feeling numb to my problems for a few hours.
I’m gonna keep kicking the can. It’s dented and scratched and the tab has fallen off. If I kick long enough, maybe one day there will be nothing left to kick. What then? Club Soda!

“We don’t negotiate salaries” is a negotiation tactic.

Always. No, your company is not an exception.

A tactic I don’t appreciate at all because of how unfairly it penalizes low-leverage, junior employees, and those loyal enough not to question it, but that’s negotiation for you after all. Weaponized information asymmetry.

And by the way, you should never be worried that an offer would be withdrawn if you politely negotiate.

I have seen this happen *extremely* rarely, mostly to women, and anyway is a giant red flag. It suggests you probably didn’t want to work there.

You wish there was no negotiating so it would all be more fair? I feel you, but it’s not happening.

Instead, negotiate hard, use your privilege, and then go and share numbers with your underrepresented and underpaid colleagues. […]

[🔞 hopekook, rimming] happy vday if you celebrate it, last night i fell asleep thinking about a horny hopekook date where they set aside time to cuddle and watch something soothing and mindless. jk chooses a nature documentary, more for background ambiance than anything else.

they start out with hobi laying crosswise on the couch, and jk crawls between his legs, rests his head on hobi's sternum. he likes to cuddle like that because he can hear hobi's heartbeat. also hobi will usually skritch his scalp when they're in this position.

he's doing that now, running his fingers from jk's forehead to the nape of his neck, but then he scoops along jk's ear instead. fingertips smoothing along the shell curve and then gently tugging on his earlobe. he keeps doing it, repetitive. the apartment is warm.

and quiet, too, except for the doc in the bg and the soft sounds of their breathing. hobi's fingertips keep tugging easily, gently on his ear lobe and all of a sudden jk realizes he's getting hard. he doesn't pay it much mind, one or both of them often do when they cuddle, even

if it's just a cuddle session & not anything further. but then hobi moves his leg, feels it, laughs softly, & moves his leg again - this time, deliberately. jk smiles, rubbing his mouth against hobi's sweatshirt. he rolls his hips, real slow like, and feels hobi's dick, too.

So it's now October 10, 2018 and....Rod Rosenstein is STILL not fired.

He's STILL in charge of the Mueller investigation.

I love a good cover story.......

The guy had a face-to-face with El Grande Trumpo himself on Air Force One just 2 days ago. Inside just about the most secure SCIF in the world.

And so we're right back to 'that dirty rat Rosenstein!' 2 days later.

At this point it's clear some members of Congress are either in on this and helping the cover story or they haven't got a clue and are out in the cold.

Note the conflicting stories about 'Rosenstein cancelled meeting with Congress on Oct 11!"

First, rumors surfaced of a scheduled meeting on Oct. 11 between Rosenstein & members of Congress, and Rosenstein just cancelled it.

Ahilyabai Holkar was one of India's
greatest women rulers of all time.

Ahilyabai was Born on May 31,1725 in the village of Chondi,Jamkhed distt,Maharashtra to a man named Mankoji Shinde,who was the Patil(Chief) of a village and a member of proud Dhangar Community.


Despite the fact that girls' education was a farther dream in those days, Ahilyabai was homeschooled by her father.
Ahilya didn't belong to any royal family but in a twist of fate she is still remembered as one of the most revered Queen in the history.


While they were living their humdrum lives, one day Malhar Rao Holkar, commander of the Peshwa Bajirao & Lord of the Malwa stopped in Chondi on his way to Pune, where he couldn't help but notice a young 8yrs old Ahilyabai in the temple service feeding the poor & hungry.

He was so impressed by the sheer innocence&beauty with simplicity character of Ahilyabai dat he asked her hand in marriage for his son Khanderao Holkar.Just like that she got married to Khanderao in 1733 at a tender age of 8&became a bride of esteemed Maratha community of Holkars

But destiny had something else in store for her as her husband died in the Battle of Kumbher in 1754 leaving her widow at 29.Distressed Ahilyabai was to commit Sati when her father-in-law Malhar Rao refused to let it happen.

Thread: History of Mogadishu and it’s conquest by Imaam Al Yaqubi


One of the First Imaams of the Hiraab Imamate was Mohamed Ibn Imaam Ahmed ibn Imam Ahmed Ibn Imaam Mohamoud Ibn Imaam Cumar Halol Al Yacquubi (Abgaal) during the year 1097 hijri.


After the collapse of the Ajuuran Abgaal nomads from the interior had started moving to take over the strategic port town of Mogadishu which was then under the muzzafar dynasty. By the 1600s Abgaal warriors had captured the city and set up their base in shingaani.


Mogadishu at the time was a large and well known port town. The Abgaal clan taking over control allowed them to obtain political power and world wide recognition.


Under Imaam Yaqubi’s time in power it’s reported that French merchants had arrived at the port in 1701
and stayed for 11 days. They had attempted to take the city but were successfully repulsed.
