It's hard for companies to hire good mid level developers. Some of the interviewers I've talked to recently have mentioned this!

So, if you're good, you can always get into a high paying job.

I have 6.5 years of experience mainly as a Backend Developer. Although I do work a bit of front-end tasks as well as part of my current job.

In this thread I'm going to talk about how I would prepare if I was going to apply for a job interview.

As a mid level developer having 4 - 8 years of experience, you will be expected to have certain skills to be hired by companies. Skills like:

- Problem Solving
- HLD
- LLD
- Mentoring / Code reviews
- Taking responsibility
- Leading end-end development & release of projects etc

Problem Solving:

Even though we mostly never write a lot of game changing Algorithms and use data structures, you're still expected to know the most common ones and how to use them to solve problems:

- Tree
- Linked List
- Heap
- Hash Map
- Array etc

How should one approach System Design questions during an interview?

System design interviews are generally open ended discussions. There's no one right answer.

The main focus in this round is to see your thought process and whether you'll be able to design a minimal system keeping future scale in mind and by following the standard principles.

Know that many interviewers deliberately make it hard to see how you approach a given problem.

You cannot possibly design a complex system in 1-2 hours which engineers usually take months to years to design, develop and build.

So this is how you should approach this round:

1. Clarify the requirements: As mentioned earlier the questions are generally very open ended. So you need to ask a lot of question to set the scope clear for the discussion.

Example: "Design an application like Twitter"

Twitter has a lot of features like:
- Post tweet
- Home timeline
- Profile timeline
- Analytics
- Likes
- Retweets
- Following
- Bookmark
- Trending etc

Here's how I went from knowing nothing about programming to someone working in Data Science👇

The path that I took wasn't the most optimal way to get a good grip on Machine Learning because...

when I started out, I knew nobody that worked or had knowledge of Data Science which made me try all sorts of different things that were not actually necessary.

I studied C programming as my first language during my freshman year in college. And before the start of my second year, I started learning python just because I knew C is not the way to go.
I learned it out of curiosity and I had no idea about Machine Learning at this point.

I did not learn python by courses but by books. I'll link all the resources at the end.
The approach I took was just to make the same kind of programs I made in C but just replacing the syntax with that of python and practised those.
Already knowing a language made it easier.

For Machine Learning, the first thing that I did was to join Andrew NG's course which really hit it off for me
I didn't have to have any idea about Machine Learning for the course. I completed that in almost a month and it gave me a good intuition of things and the flow of ML.

Instead of just throwing a few links at you, I first want to cover something much more fundamental: The *reason* you want to learn to code.

I've had to train a good number of developers in my time. The ones that succeeded had rock-solid, persistent motivations. Is that you?

Some good motivations for learning how to code:

* Enabling a career change
* Insatiable curiosity, eagerness to learn
* Frustration with inefficiency + desire to improve things
* Larger goals in mind, coding being a stepping stone

Some bad motivations for learning how to code:

* It seems popular
* Your friends/family have ideas for apps
* You want to make lots of money by sitting in front of a computer
* You bought an expensive MacBook and are struggling to justify the expense

Motivation matters, because of the one thing that's universally true about coding: It's hard.

Depending on what you do, you may have to learn several languages at once. Tools constantly update. New approaches land in the market on an annual basis. You're constantly upskilling.
