GANESHA’s LOVE FOR MODAK

Among all things offered to Ganesh, it is Modak that is his favourite.
So, here is a story on Ganesh and Modak.
Once, Shiva went to Rishi Atri and Ma Anasuya ashram. Shiva was very hungry but Anasuya insisted on feeding Ganesha first.

Once, a demon Pandasura was harassing the Devas who went to Devi Parashakti for protection.

Devi rose from a Yaga Gunda, mounted on the Sri Chakra Rath with the name Lalithambika, waged a war against Pandasura and destroyed him.  When her fury did not subside, Shiva asked her to go to Earth, assume the name Manonmani, perform penance and shed her fury.

Shiva blessed Devi to be Shanta nayagi. There is a sculpture here depicting Shiva pacifying Devi. If you observe closely, you can see that from your left hand side there will be a smile on Her face and if you see from your right hand side you can see anger in Her face.

Hayagriva taught the greatness of Lalitha Sahasranama to Rishi Agasthya. Pleased with his devotion, Ma Lalithambikai appeared before Agastya. He is believed to have then sung Lalita Navaratnamala in praise of Devi. He has also composed a hymn named Rahasyanamasahasram.

Divya Desha where Perumal appears with moustache of a Sarathi (charioteer) to conduct Arjun’s Rath in Kurukshetra war.
Here, Venkatkrishna-Parthasarthy is present with his entire family.

He is flanked by Sri Rukmini, Sri Balarama, Satyaki, son Pradyumn and grandson Anirudha.
It is said that on the request of Raja Sumathirajan, Sri Perumal appeared and stayed here as Arjun’s charioteer (Partha-sarathi).

He is without chakra as he had promised not to wield weapons in Mahabharata war.
The face has scars caused by Bhishma’s arrows on Arjun. Prabhu took the arrows on himself to protect Arjun.

The Naivedyam offered here does not have spices. Ghee is used in it to cure Prabhu’s wounds. Sarkarai Pongal is famous here.

It is said that Rishi Bhrigu found Devi Lakshmi (as Vedvalli) in Alli flower in the mandir pushkarini. Later, Sri Ranganatha came here to marry her.

JWALAMUKHI TRIPURASUNDARI, UTHANAHALLI, MYSURU (KAR)

Jwalamukhi Tripursundari is believed to be the sister of Devi Chamundeshwari, the presiding deity of Mysuru
It is also that she represents the flaming mouth of Jalandhara, the demon whom Shiva crushed to death.

When Devi Chamundeswari was fighting Mahishasura, she observed that from every drop of blood that spilled out of Mahishasura, another demon was born. So she created Tripurasundari to ensure that no blood dripped from Mahishasura.

Tripura Sundari means beauty of the three worlds.
The murti was installed during Wodeyar rule. An utsava murti made of pancha loha is kept in the sanctum sanctorum.
Another shrine here is dedicated to Siddeshwara / Shiva surrounded by a beautiful wooden Mantapa.

WHY IS GREEN CAMPHOR APPLIED TO CHIN OF SRI VENKATESWARA: STORY

Although called Green Camphor, it is actually white (Pachcha Karpooram).
This is applied daily to Sri Venkateswara’s chin.

Sri Ramanujacharya once asked a Bhakta Ananthalwar to build a flower garden on Tirumala.

As this was a divine task assigned to him by Acharya,Anantalwar decided on not seeking the services of any outsider except his wife who was pregnant at that time.
His wife started carrying soil from one place to another everyday but used to get exhausted soon.

Sri Venkateswara took the form of a 12-year old boy and started assisting Ananthalwar’s wife.
One day, Ananthalwar saw the boy and could not control his anger. He threw his crowbar at the boy which hit him on the chin.
The boy disappeared and Ananthalwar realised his mistake.

He ran to the mandir and saw Sri Venkateswara with a bleeding chin.
Ananthalwar immediately applied green camphor to Sri Hari’s chin and begged to be forgiven.
The kind Prabhu forgave him and asked him to ensure that the cooling camphor was applied to his chin daily.

So the practice continues till today.
The flower garden built by Ananthalwar is on the right side of the Mandir.
The crowbar with which Ananthalwar had hit Sri Venkateswara’s chin hangs to the right side of the main entrance to the Garbha Griha of the Tirumala Mandir.

EVOLUTION OF CROWNS

The ancient Indian kings called a head crown as a Mukut and it would mostly constitute of a golden ornamental headgear like an oval cap with gems.

Sometimes it would also include a halo circle to show the divinity of the king

As it was considered that kings were appointment by the gods themselves. Example the kings of mewar considered themselves to be the ‘Diwan of eklingji')

But in most cases very few Mukut with halo effect have been found.

Samudragupta in the gupta era coin. You can see the helmet like headwear on him.

Till gupta era the solid golden head wear was used in most days of the monarch.

But since the onset of 8th century it reduced in usage and was now used only as a ceremonial headwear.

Whereas earlier the Maharaja had to wear the mukut whenever his court was in session.

Still mukut was being used prominently for ceremonial activities till recent times.

But as times past the style of headwear also changed.

The kings mostly wore turbans ordained with pearls and gems while rarely anyone wore a true Mukut after 16th century.

She is also called Dandini (Lady Commander of the forces of the Mother-Goddess, symbolizing the might of SriVidya). As Vaarahi ("hog-faced" or "the great consumer") she destroys evil forces that obstructs the devotees' progress, paralyses the enemies 3/n

and led the devotees ultimately to SriVidyas. She is also called Panchami). With Kurukalla, she is accorded the parental status to Sri-Chakra (Lalita Tripura-Sundari). While Kurukalla represents the full moon, Vaarahi represents the new-moon. 4/4
