21 Tips that will make you a more effective and efficient reader:

 1. Always remember that the hardest part of reading is sitting down and opening the book.
2. Quit bad books so you can spend more time reading good ones.
3. If 3 people you respect recommend the same book, buy it.
4. The best time to read is early in the morning before work or late at night before bed.
5. Read what you love until you love to read.
6. The best way to find amazing books is to follow your curiosity, not the bestseller list.
7. To build up a reading habit try to read every day even if it’s only for two minutes.
8. Carry a book with you everywhere you go. You never know when you’ll find yourself with some extra reading time.
9. Read multiple books at once. That way you can match your mood to your books.
10. There is no Book Police coming to get you if you don’t read classic books.
11. Experiment with different book mediums. Try physical books, eBooks, and audiobooks to see which ones best match your lifestyle.
12. It's okay to skim, skip, or speed-read the boring parts of a book.
13. Remember that buying books is an investment, not an expense.
14. The best way to not get distracted while reading is to put your phone in another room.
15. Always have a pen with you so that you can jot down
important lessons.
16. After reading a book, summarize the key lessons and think of ways you can apply them to improve your life.
17. Don’t feel guilty about having unread books. It's better to have books and not the time to read them than to have time but not books to read.
18. Spend more time rereading amazing books. Great books have so much wisdom that you’ll have to reread them to absorb all of their knowledge.
19. Start tracking your reading progress so that you keep yourself accountable for reaching your reading goals.
20. Be a critical reader: Question what you’re learning and decide whether or not you agree with the author.

A simple guide to taking notes while reading.

0) Things you’ll need:

• Book
• Pen
• Highlighter


1) Write your name & the date on the inside of the front cover.

If you ever forget or mix up books, you’ll know which is yours.

The date serves as a type of journal entry in your life and can tell you how long it took to read the book.


2) As you read, highlight passages that resonate with you

This could be text you want to review later, include in future articles, makes you stop to think, etc.

(PS: I recommend the clear Sharpie highlighter, it’s wide so it gets the whole line & it’s comfortable to hold)


3) Write in the margins & star important text

Remember that this is your book and you’re allowed to write in it.

When a text is super important, highlight it & add a star next to it.

I worked in bank liquidity and treasury for the better part of the last decade, and there is one very interesting risk factor from the SVB collapse that I do not think we have ever witnessed before in modern finance, a 🧵:

First, some context. Following the 2008 financial crisis where a massive driver of stress was caused by low quality assets littering the balance sheets of massive institutions, the regulators sought to create a framework to ensure all banks were verifiably sound.

This meant forcing Federally registered banks to conform to capital and liquidity ratios. If they did not comply, they would not be allowed to issue dividends or buy back stocks, hurting the value of their enterprise.

There was the introduction of the concept of RWA, or risk weighted assets. A simple way to think of these ratios is, the riskier your asset base on a weighted basis, the more high quality capital (think cash) you would need to hold to stay in compliance.

Not only were banks required to regularly be in compliance with these ratios as a going concern, but needed to prove they could maintain certain limits when met with a time of stress across a number of incrementally adverse scenarios.

We have already gone through the series on importance & characteristics of all the eighteen Purans. We also know that originally there were hundred crore shlokas but were divided by Vyas in each Kalp and was compiled as eighteen Purans


for the common people to understand it properly and now their total is about four lakhs.

In Brahm Puran, Brahma preached this to Marichi. So this Puran of ten thousand shlokas is called Brahm Puran.

In Padma Puran, the base of the story is the appearance of Brahma on a lotus(Padm) from Vishnu' s navel.This has fifty five thousand shlokas.

Vishnu Puran is primarily based in Varah kalp. This book is on Vishnu and this book has twenty three thousand shlokas.

Vaayu Puran is written in Shwet Kalp and has twenty four thousand shlokas. Here Vayudev preaches about Dharma.

In Bhagwat Puran, which is written with the base of Gayatri mantra describes Dharma extensively. It has 18000 shlokas. It also mentions the story of Vritrasur.

In Narad Puran, which has twenty five thousand shlokas, is a sermon on Dharma by Narad based in Brihad Kalp.

Markandeya Puran has nine thousand shlokas and here it is through the birds that Dharma is described.

A relationship begins to get stiff when excessive patterns begin to form.

Too many patterns leads to a boring, predictable, logical lifestyle.

Get the emotions involved.

Do something spontaneous out of the blue moon & flip the script.

'What's wrong with the patterns?'

Nothing is wrong with patterns.

However, there is a problem when all you have are patterns.

It's boring.

'Can you explain why?'

The thing with relationships is that it's meant to be an emotional experience.

It's very difficult to logically explain love, right?

'Right.'

Well this is where you want to steer the ship the right way.

1. Too emotional is bad.

2. Too logical is bad.

Let me break it down.

1. Too emotional

If a relationship is completely ruled by emotions, then it's too volatile.

You will never reach productivity if you are aimlessly only following each others emotions.

This lifestyle tarnishes any structure for the couple.

'So why do people do it?'

Because it's fun.

You may ruled by this stage in the honeymoon phase.

Normal.

You'll be so spontaneous that it almost becomes a lifestyle.

But it's hard to level up your life when you're too spontaneous.

I get asked for writing tips a lot. Of all the ones I’ve given, here are a few of the ones that seem to hold true and remain somewhat universal or at least mostly unobjectionable:

1. If you are a fast writer (i.e., if you compose first drafts very quickly) then you absolutely must become a slow editor. Much of what I call “writing” is really, for me, editing.

2. If you don’t read you cannot write a lot or well. Sure, maybe you can read like a maniac for a decade and then read less after that, but without some large volume of intake, there will never be a meaningful output.

2.1 I sometimes say that I feel like writing without reading is like trying to run a marathan on a cracker. And sadly I see many students struggling to write when they have simply never read enough to fuel that demand of the task at hand.

3. All writing is writing if one decides to treat it that way. If one takes some degree of intentional will when sending emails, posting on social media and writing notes and marginalia, then all of that can count as meaningful daily writing.
