Why does Bhagwan Vishnu and Bhagwan Shiv have different Namam's on there forehead. What does it indicate?

Tilaks are used to indicate one’s philsophy. Shiva’s tilak (Tripundra) is used to mark the 3 Vedic fires, while Vishnu’s tilak (Urdhva Pundra) is to show the God’s feet.

Hindus consider the area between the eyebrows is a very sacred part of the body and termed the Ajna Chakra or the third eye. It is around this place Hindus wear special marks that directly indicate their philosophical leanings. There are dozens of different marks indicating

Why the Tripundra?
There are 3 types of holy fires to be kept at home in the Vedic tradition.
1Gārhapatya — a neutral fire that is kept in the kitchen and

used to ignite all other fires.
2Ahavaniya — a positive fire that is kept in the east for homas — celebrating the good forces.
3Dakshinagni — a negative fire that is kept in the south to defend from the evil spirits

until the year 1938 that Western scientists finally figured out the mechanism of Solar energy generation.

According to the Vayu Purāņa (2.38.141-142), udaka (and its Sanskrit synonyms vāri, vṛṣți, ambhas, arṇava and apa) is the fuel that the Sun

tasmādudakam sūryyasya tapato'ti hi kathyate

nāvṛṣṭyā tapate sūryo nāvṛṣṭyā pariviṣyate

nāvṛṣṭya paricinvanti vāriņā dīpyate raviḥ

tasmādapaḥ piban ya vai dipyate ravirambare

It is said that hydrogen (udaka) is the source of the Sun's heat. When there is a

lack of hydrogen (vṛṣṭi), the Sun will neither be hot, nor able to shine, nor able to cause evaporation of water. Sun shines in the sky because of consuming hydrogen (apaḥ) (Vāyu Purāņa 2.38.141-142).

These verses are also found in the Visņu, Brahmaṇḍa, Kurma and other

urāņas. The Sanskrit word udaka, and its synonyms, are generally translated as water, but we interpret them as hydrogen in this context because:

In suryarghya, the devotees stand, in the morning facing the sun, take handful “attentively, you will see the seven coloured spectrum of light.
It is considered proper to offer water to the sun from a lota with convex edge. If the edge of the

pot, from which you are offering water to the sun, is concave, you will see the sun in a bigger form
In such a situation our eyes will not be in a position to bear the sun-rays. It would be better if the lota is of copper or brass, instead of a bright metal such as aluminium or

NARHARI AND BHAGWAN PANDURANG/VITTHAL

Once a goldsmith by the name of Narhari lived in Pandharpur. He excelled in his craft. He had vowed not to look at Pandurang or visit his mandir ever, as he was a Shiva Bhakt.
One day, a wealthy merchant visited him.

He wanted a gold girdle studded with precious gems, to be made for Prabhu Vitthal. Narhari refused to make it as it was for Vitthal.
After many requests, he agreed to make the girdle but asked the merchant to bring the measurement from the mandir as he himself would not go there

The measurement was given n he made the girdle. When the girdle was put on Vitthal, it was loose. Narhari had to shorten it. Now the girdle became tight. So Narhari was forced to take measurement on his own. He had to go to the mandir but went blindfolded to avoid seeing Vitthal

In the Mandir, when blindfolded Narhari touched Vitthal, he felt as if he was touching Shiva with matted hair, the moon, snake in His neck and Trishul in His hand. Ecstatic with joy, he removed the blindfold to see Shiva but he found the murti of Vitthal with Rukmini there.

He realised the truth that there was no difference between Vitthal and Shiva. Narhari at once fell at the feet of Panduranga. He then took the measurement of the waist of Vitthal and this time the ornament fit the Murti perfectly.
