Trading earnings (A short thread trying to explain in laymen terms) 👇

Earnings can be traded in many ways and I do it in three different ways -
a) Trading direction
b) Long volatility
c) Short volatility (most common).

Let's talk about each one of them.

 a) Direction - The most difficult way for me to trade esp. before the earnings. For ex, you expect HUL to post a strong set of numbers due to huge demand of consumer items in previous quarter and go long. But, HUL has already run up and the street estimates are also on the +
higher side so there could be profit booking even after strong numbers or if there's a slight miss, street won't like it and stock may fall. Even the technicals don't matter much prior to the earnings as nobody knows what lies ahead in the earnings. Trading directionally post +
result can do better where you can mark certain important support/resistance or supply/demand zones which when taken out post result can present a good trade. I sometimes do trade this way.

b) Long volatility - Here, I take long vega strategies going into the result. +
Volatility usually increases as we move closer to the result and thus resulting in increase in option pricing. I almost always take long straddle trade for this (buying ATM call and put both) much ahead of the earnings (anytime between 13DTE - 5DTE). Since I am buying options, +
theta is against me but the expectation is that vega expansion might compensate for the theta loss. Many a times a stock moves too fast going into the earnings and it makes my long straddle a very good trade. Things to look out for before initiating this trade - current IVs vs +
previous few quarters IVs at the time of earnings, say for ex current TCS IVs are 26 vs previous few quarters where it was 32/36/40, etc. There is no perfect fix time to enter and it varies from stock to stock but usually going long when you either see IVs starting to expand or +
they are ridiculously low makes for a good trade. At times, I try to scalp gamma and use 25-30 delta options for this. These trades have limited losses and can be very rewarding occasionally when there is a good delta move.

c) Short volatility - Everyone's favorite because it
makes money real quick when it works. I take this trade just prior to the earnings. So if TCS is declaring result on 8th post market, I will take this trade on 8th. When trading multiple lots, I will build the position from the morning based on my assessment of volatility. +
Taking this trade as close to the earning as possible usually works well because you don't have to worry about any delta move prior to the result. I either short strangles (~20 delta) or take flies (short straddle with buying OTM options as wings). When I have directional bias, +
I create different structures like skewed strangles, jade lizard or reverse jade lizard, broken wing flies, etc. but the underlying idea behind each trade remains to be short vega. These are limited profit trades and when trading naked, theoretically there is unlimited loss so +
position should be sized keeping in mind the fat tail risk associated with trading naked options. Earlier I used to trade very aggressively and would take 1 lot with 10L capital but given my current position sizing rules wherein I don't carry more than .2X exposure of account +
size in one stock, I won't take more than 2-3 lots for a 1 cr account. Shorting naked options is not advisable unless your capital is at least 20L. If new, it's better to go with flies/condors for short volatility trades ahead of result.

I have been trading earnings for many
quarters now and will post some of my trades like I always do with every earning season. If you are new to SSO trading, try and observe how earning trades work for a few quarters before taking trades.

Takshshila and Nalanda were the two prominent universities of ancient India.


But were these only Universities of ancient India?The answer is 'No'.Let's learn about these gems of our education system that flourished across ancient India & be proud.

Scientists of the modern world credit an English scientist John Dalton (1766 CE -1844 CE) for the Atomic Theory.


And this is because, most of us are not even aware of an ancient Indian Sage named Kanada, who was the first to formulate the theory of atoms, almost 2600 yrs before Dalton and talk about earth's gravity.


Rishi Kanada was born around 600 BCE in Dwarka, Gujarat and he was the son of a philosopher named Ulka. He was fascinated with the minute detailing of the things right from his childhood. Once, when he was very young, he accompanied his father on a journey to Prayaga.


He saw plentiful grains scattered along the path leading to the shore of river Ganga. It's a tradition in Hindu families to scatter the grains for the ants and birds to feed on them. Suddenly, an ant caught his attention, who was feeding on a rice grain.


He was mesmerised by this very fact that how a small grain of rice becomes food for the ant but to satisfy the hunger of a person so many grains are needed together. This incidence made him realize the importance of a single grain of rice.

• These five faces are symbolic of the five primordial elements called पञ्चमहाभूत:' which makes up the entire existence.

1. Roads
There has been an increase in the construction of National Highways (NHs)/roads over
time, with 10,457 km of roads constructed in FY22 as compared to 6,061 km in FY16.

Observing the public conversation around FB, and the private ones happening among techies and ex-FBers, I think the mutual misunderstanding is worse than when I set out two years (and 500 pages) ago to (in a small way) bridge that gulf.

We're basically fucked.

The tech world has gotten so huge, self-reinforcing, and insulated from reality they can no longer even vaguely look at themselves (and their actions) as others do. They just live on a different planet than most people.

Conversely, the average tech consumer doesn't understand the technology that has slowly taken over their lives, and their designated emissaries to figure it out--politicians, pundits, regulators, journalists--understand it barely better than they do, and have their own agendas.

To say more than generalities for a moment, here's what I think is likely the core problem.

Techies take weird, improbable visions, and make them realities: some BS pitch deck to a VC, mixed with money and people, really does turn into some novel thing.

Most people work inside a legacy industry that's evolved that way over time (usually for good reasons), and they think about the future via some analogy with their present (which is a function of a long-ago past). The interruption that tech will introduce is often hard to grasp.

It is a series of Sanskrit shlokas recited by Jambavant to Hanuman to remind Him of his true potential.

5.विजिटरीपुरु धीरधारा, कलोथरा शिखरा कठोरा: This is a complex expression seen only in Indic language poetry. The poet is stating that Shivudu is experiencing the intensity of climbing a tough peak, and likening

it to the feeling in a hard battle, when you see your enemy defeated, and blood flowing like a rivulet. This is classical Veera rasa.

6.कुलकु थारथिलीथा गम्भीरा, जाया विराट वीरा: His rough body itself is like a sharp weapon (because he is determined to win). Hail this complete

hero of the world.

7.विलयगागनथाला भिकारा, गरज्जद्धरा गारा: The hero is destructive in the air/sky as well (because he can leap at an enemy from a great height). He can defeat the enemy (simply) with his fearsome roar of war.

How did I go from a busily scheduled life to one with substantial unstructured time?

1/ More creating, less consuming

I stopped obsessive mindless scrolling and started creating. Instagram for artworks. Twitter for thoughts. Unsubscribed from other apps. Saved a LOT of time.

2/ More deep focus, less context switching

I loved to be involved in many projects, but didn’t take into account the cost of making the mind switch between works. I decided to choose one important project and pour all of me into it.

3/ “It’s either hell yeah, or no”

I dropped projects that didn’t make me feel all fervent. I ruthlessly purged the guilt and FOMO. It was hella scary and uncomfortable at first, but was liberating over time. Knowing your why is the key.

4/ More focus on health and people

I was generous with time when it was for my health and people. I exercised, did yoga, went on for walks, and slept whenever I wanted. Same way, I didn’t look at the clock when I was with people. I resolved to be there and only there.

5/ Less worrying about saying no

Well, this was perhaps the toughest one for me. I was so used to being involved in many projects, that retracting myself from them was almost impossible. It was SO painful. Yet, I trusted it would be a wise choice long term and bore the pain.
