Trump came to my beloved Omaha. Omaha is a purple city. Trump bussed in a ton of peeps who waited in unseasonably cold weather for him to arrive. After he was done speaking, he left the peeps in the cold FOR HOURS without busses.

Hypothermic people without masks everywhere.

OPD stuck with the mess. We are knee deep in COVID here. Many people had to be taken to the hospital for treatment because of hypothermia.

How do we calculate the toll for this idiocy? This event may turn out to be a huge miscalculation on his part one week from the election.

Trump buses people in and then abandons them at an airport in freezing weather before flying off to another super spreader event.

The event at TAC air is on the opposite side of where the parking is. It took hours to clean up Trump’s mess during a pandemic on a freezing night.

Last night in Omaha is a perfect example of who Trump is and the way that he governs. He just keeps finding new lows. How many of those people that ended up going to the hospital last night either became infected or caused infections on their way to and from the hospital?

I hope the good people of Omaha see who @RepDonBacon and Trump are and rebuke them up when they vote. If what happened last night in Omaha is a tipping point, @KaraEastman and @JoeBiden should have a good night on 11/3/20.

When @smfrogers and @albertocairo reached out to do a project for the US elections, based on Google Trends data, my immediate thought was to make it *long-term*.

Google Trends covers 17 years of data by now!

What an opportunity to investigate how past US election years were different from this one, and which attention cycles can we observe within election years.

How did the topic landscape evolve?

And how has the pace of attention shifts changed?

After lots of analysis and experimentation, we put together the site as follows:

Opening with a smooth wavy line chart animation — an ambient introduction to the theme of waves, and trends — we dive right into the first central question:

"Which political topics trend in election years in general? And when?"

We show both a list of top rising topics in election years, as well as a detailed chart of how their search interest values unfolded over the years.

Eight years ago I launched an enduring collaboration with Andrea Califano @ColumbiaCancer to apply his regulatory network analysis techniques to #pancreaticcancer. So many amazing scientists have contributed to this work: @paslaise @hc_maurer @AlvaroCurielGa1 @ElyadaEla 2/

What is “regulatory network analysis”? At it's heart, it's a way of extracting more useful information from expression profiles. A fundamental flaw of differential gene expression (DGE) analysis is the assumption that each gene is independent. Biologist KNOW this is not true! 3/

DGE treats all ~25K detectable genes as SEPARATE variables, performs 25K T-tests, and then slaps on a multiple hypothesis correction to make the statisticians less dyspeptic. There is no consideration of the relationships between genes! 4/

Yet we KNOW genes are co-regulated in SETS by transcription factors and other REGULATORY FACTORS. Biologist: “p21 is a target of p53”. DGE: “Shhhh”. These relationships are completely ignored by expression analysis. THIS IS A TRAVESTY! 5/
