This is one reason why I quit robotics. I thought it was like....you can work and build fun stuff...but when we went to regional championships there was the FREAKING MILITARY??? And Lockheed Martin and Delta. And they were ALL like....we make planes for the military >:)

Me: am I gonna build a space ship!?

Robotics fair: No bich! You live in georgia!! Now help us build these aerial bombers and military excavation robots! :))

Me:

Like both delta and Lockheed Martin are here and several large military bases so we actually got to visit delta hangers where they make the planes and I was like wow! Planes! And then later i found out airlines are big jerks and make stuff for the airforce.

I wish I would've known I could still probably build spaceships....but idk I was like 15 I didn't know shit. I was just like....I don't see any spaceships!???
I liked the commercial planes...planes are a lot here in Georgia theres a school for it and they have their own airport.

We went there it was cool. Its in the country tho because its a tiny airport for regional flights so the students learn how a control tower works. The control tower is super cool.
Ever think that Robot-robots are cooler than Meat-robots? Yeah, I know. I am weird like that. 😐🖖🏽

Humanity; possibly the biological boot loader for digital superintelligence. - @elonmusk

This was a difficult book to get through and hard to absorb in a single read. But this book explains in detail how artificial superintelligence will eventually arise and what are the works that being done. It's also a fascinating walkthrough of what intelligence really is.

This year has been wild with so many things happening in a news cycle it's just really crazy and hard to keep track off. I mean think about it, from pandemic to trump to Islamist, to black lives matter and climate change and so many more things than I can fit into this tweet.

But if was to pick 1 thing that will have the most lasting impact on humanity into perpetuity would be that of developments in AI that has happened silently in the background without most people ever noticing it.

The most important of which is that of GPT3, a language learning model that has the capacity of 175 billion machine learning parameters, beating previous efforts by GPT2 (mid year) and also a model by Microsoft by 10x (February) all within this year. The growth is exponential.
As a mechanical engineer who is also a writer, this sort of thing makes no sense to me. Life isn’t an either or, and it hasn’t been like that for a while. Rather than putting science against the arts, perhaps thinking about creating an economy that works for us all? would be nice

Plus let’s be honest here. Im a technical person and have flirted w getting into cyber for ages, but the things I love about mech engineer are not actually in cyber. I don’t want to do PEN tests for banks all my Life. Its not quite being in a workshop, or living on a rig -

There’s a bigger question here about what the point of all this is. Encouraging people to explore different jobs is great. But are we talking about quality of work / Life? Have we thought about whether these environments are welcoming or hostile? What energy are we putting into

Changing the structures of these industries? Do you know depressing it is going into work with people who think who you are isn’t of value? No amount of money is worth it for everyone

I’ve gone off on a tangent. But it’s taken me a long time (and I’m still working on it) to unlearn the ‘undervaluing’ of the arts that I grew up with, and stuff like this doesn’t help, and makes me sad. Because we should be better.
