c) Try the Courts...

1)When did it become a crime for The People to enter The People’s House?

The next question is: Who was it that actually broke laws?

2)Seems to me that the Elitists calling yesterday’s protestors “law breakers” had no problem calling those who burned and looted cities (including DC) in 2020 “peaceful” and “justified”... and protected them from prosecution.

3)
As it was with all those mayors and politicians in 2020, it’s only when they are directly confronted by the People they pissed off that they call for “law and order” and start making arrests.

4) We are now being told that the “why” doesn’t matter (though it did in Portland and elsewhere to excuse that violence).

5) An Election was rigged and the Vote, the actual, tangible thing that enshrines and documents the Consent of the Governed, which is the foundation of all laws and permissions to govern, has been nullified.

I am listening in on the arraignment of dozens of people who were arrested at the pro-Trump riots and protests at the Capitol yesterday. Will tweet what I find out.

The first person arraigned in connection with yesterday's riots is Michael Amos from FL. Charges: Unlawful entry to the capitol building & violation of curfew. The Judge says he disobeyed Capitol Police & Metropolitan Police Dept. He is released pending trial, but banned from DC.

He was held overnight. He said his phone is dead, and that he's staying in a hotel outside of the DC area and that he has to drive through DC to go home to Florida. The government agrees to allow him to drive through the city if he doesn't get out of the car. He has no priors.

During this arraignment Metro Police released a list of all those arrested yesterday in connection with the riots/break into the capitol building, as well as the charges. Not all of them will be arraigned today:

Next is David Ross from MA, also charged w curfew violation, unlawful entry to the capitol. They read him his standard rights and ask him if he understands his rights. He responds, "Uh, kinda?" They clarify them and he pleads not guilty. Judge orders him to stay out of DC.

CNN reporting now that Donald Trump pressured VP Mike Pence to engineer a coup and threatened him with consequences if he didnt cooperate.

"Pence's family also threatened".

THREAD: I’ve represented people the government views as “terrorists.” Here’s an incomplete set of reasons why calling yesterday “terrorism” is not a good idea:

If the goal is to trigger accountability: the DOJ has *plenty* of tools to investigate, prosecute, or otherwise hold accountable those who conspired to break the laundry list of laws that were broken yesterday. I’ll let those more prosecutorially-minded list them out.

The govt regularly prosecutes activities it labels terrorism without ever actually charging a crime of terrorism. On the flip side, it charges not actually dangerous, but marginalized, ppl with terrorism-related crimes all the time. Here's a @HRW on this:

If the purpose is discursive, ask: what work does the Terrorism word do? What did the “War on Terror” designator do? It just stokes fear and clouds our ability to talk about root causes, understand different forms of violence & protest, and different relationships w the state.

@EU_Commission This is in no way confined to food industry - clothes and retailers are also hard-hit.

But lots of industry has wrongly bet that 'common sense' and 'self interest' would prevail once the nasty negotiations phase was out the way...but that's not the signal being sent. /4

As one EU official puts it: “You can’t expect the UK to remain the food import hub for the EU. It’s not sustainable, and makes no sense in the mid-to-longer run." And that applies to financial services, clothing, retail goods....a bureaucratic curtain has descended. /4

THREAD: In the aftermath of Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol, far-right groups, pro-Trump militias, and white supremacists are revelling in the chaos caused, all while continuing to spread their propaganda & disinformation. Here is a small sampling:

The neo-fascist Proud Boys hate group bragged on social media about the fear they helped cause, while their leader (who was arrested on Jan. 5 and barred from DC) told them to “never stop fighting”

The NSC 131 white nationalist hate group—founded by former member of neo-Nazi terror group the Base—was present at the insurrection & later posted photos of stolen Capitol police gear while bragging about their role in storming the Capitol

I witnessed a really powerful moment today in court. A judge read the harrowing words of a junior doctor to a man who had been on a mass protest against lockdown.

The truly brilliant District Judge Lynne Matthews was addressing a 53-year-old man who had marched against lockdown with 400 other Covid sceptics in Bristol.

Judge Matthews started the hearing by reading out an article she’d seen in the Times during her lunch break. It was written by a doctor on a high dependency ward. Here is some of what the judge read:

“The patients don’t ask many questions, mostly because they need to spend all of their energy breathing.

“I try to work out if one of my patients isn’t answering my questions because she is delirious, because she doesn’t speak English, or because she is depressed. I work out that it is probably the latter; her notes say that her husband died just before new year, from Covid.

Not sure if people want a historical comparison thread, but here’s one on insurrection and a violent attempt at a coup in 1874 New Orleans, often called the Battle of Liberty Place. Thread includes a white supremacist monument. 1/

During Reconstruction, there was a lot of white supremacist violence in the South, as former confederates and whites in general wanted to reclaim full political power. Image from Harper's after the New Orleans Massacre in the summer of 1866.

In the summer of 1874, the White League in New Orleans was galvanized by false stories spread by former confederate officer Frederick N. Ogden. Those false stories were that groups of Black men were going to incite violence. This was all false.

Political tension was high in New Orleans in 1874. Rather than concede the 1872 gubernatorial election, Democratic candidate John McEnery set up his own dueling government. (Remember that this was before the parties changed, as @KevinMKruse has detailed on here before.)

On Sept 12, 1874, a steamer came into the port of New Orleans with guns and ammunition for the White League. When the ship was seized, Ogden and others claimed their 2nd Amendment rights were being trampled.

I don't always like that freedoms are enshrined in process; checks & balances. It's not perfect; sometimes those processes are used to oppress (voting in the South). The principle though is freedom that goes through process prevents passions of mobs (yesterday's domestic terror)

Can process be misused? Yes, absolutely, thus the need for well-informed voters/participants in civic life. But are the people who attacked the Capitol oppressed by misused process? Even many other Republicans say, no; by end of day that number had grown.

Their sense of grievance is real - and preyed upon. For other circumstances in their lives it's possible sense of grievance is justified; rust belt poverty is brutal for instance. But feeling wronged & being wronged are different.

There isn't evidence of the will of the people being suppressed in this election. It is a nauseating twist to witness, that a group of people carrying Confederate flags into the Capitol building claim oppression by broken process.

In the C-Span livestream & photos yesterday, & the footage that emerged shortly after, it was apparent the crowd was a mix of near-tourist rural supporters, known white supremacists, & militia-like aggressors. At least 1 of those groups isn't interested in sharing fair process.

The organizer of yesterday’s insurrection is one of the top influencers in that group — JennyBeth Martin, formerly of Tea Party Patriots.

Because no one calls them out, and because the IRS granted this group of orgs their coveted nonprofit status and further loosened restrictions and disclosures for them, they’ve been allowed to grow a seditious, criminal enterprise, led by the spouse of a sitting SCOTUS justice.

Reading the IFR about PPP second draw and it's got me thinking about who qualifies for second draw. Might be so many thoughts I need like several tweets in a row or a thread if you will. Warning I don't get to the real point of this until like a dozen tweets in #taxtwitter

Need 300 or less emp and a 25% decline in revenue 2020 vs 2019. There are rules about what's an employee and what's gross receipts so I don't really have any questions or deep thoughts about that part. I think we all understand how you document gross receipts went down.

Nice of them to define the gross receipts in a footnote of page 8 and on page 23. PPP loans would not be included so that's helpful and logical. These rules are not always helpful and logical so nice to see that.

Another requirement is that PPP first draw was received and has used the full amount of the PPP first draw on "eligible expenses" on or before PPP second draw is disbursed. That's interesting to me. It doesn't say that the PPP first draw will be entirely forgiven.

Eligible exp for PPP first draw are referenced back to the other new IFR on PPP first draw and it's the whole list of payroll, rent, PPE, supplier costs etc. Certainly to achieve 100% forgiveness you needed to spend 60% on payroll and spend all of it in the CP.

Look. #Congress needs to #STFU with calling what happened, yesterday, an "#insurrection." It was a group of people who occupied a building, perhaps guilty of vandalism & trespassing...but that did not require a man to shoot a unarmed WOMAN at point blank range.

The way #Congress just side-stepped an actual MURDER by their people & desperately ignored crowds outside that felt disenfranchised by a contentious #election, really shows how much most of them don't give a F about constituents--their purpose was to represent their voters.

And to even temporarily "ban" the standing #POTUS on social media should never have been allowed. I think the #CEOs of #Twitter should be arrested for that. They don't lead out country. #Trump should have declared social #media a "public utility"--when that happened.

Whether people "like" #Trump or not...#Twitter should not have the power to circumvent the standing #POTUS from communicating with the public, especially during what many deemed an "emergency"...

And another thing I want to say to people who are overly critical of #Trump--especially those in #Congress--do you fucking idiots know how laws are made? CONGRESS introduces proposed laws and votes on it...any complaints about *policy* should be directed toward CONGRESS, first.

I clearly & categorically condem the violence that we witnessed in the Capitol building in Washington yesterday during the meeting of the Electors. I believe that the election was rigged& Trump was robbed but violence in any shape or form has no place in a democratic setting.1/
