Last month marked 4 years since the Battle of Aleppo was concluded.

Since then, over 500 projects have been implemented in the city, and 2500 projects in the governorate.

An extensive thread of the progress that has been made over the past four years:

 4.2 million m2 of rubble and debris has been removed, and the removal of circa 6070 destroyed or burnt vehicles.
117 water sanitation projects have been implemented, in addition to the implementation of asphaltation projects amounting to 1.2 million m2 of asphalt.
Circa 4650 lamp-posts have been rehabilitated or installed to relight the city. Many of these run on solar lightning.
47 green spaces and parks have been rehabilitated, including the Central Park of Aleppo. This year (January 2021), Aleppo City Council has already begun rehabilitating three more parks - Seif Al Dawla Park, Al-Ansari Park, and Al-Sukari Park.
1020 schools are now operating in the city and its secured countryside. During the siege of Aleppo, only 290 schools were still operating.
Aleppo has 37 historical souks (markets) part of the greater Souk Al-Madina. ~10 historical souks have been or are being rehabilitated, such as Souk Al-Saqatiyya, Souk Khan Al-Harir, Souk Al-Khabieh, Souk Al-Suweiqa, Souk Al-Niswan, Souk Al-Haddadin, Souk Khan Al-Jumrok, etc.
54 health centres and hospitals have been rehabilitated in the city.
18260 handicrafts facilities are now operating in the 7 industrial areas of Aleppo. In the industrial city of Sheikh Najjar, 675 industrial facilities have returned to work of which 100 returned only last year.
105 touristic facilities have been restored (hotels and restaurants, for instance), including the Sheraton Hotel and the regionally renowned Beroea Restaurant.
Over half of Aleppo’s 156 archaeological mosques in the old city have been or are being rebuilt. Some of the most notable examples include the Umayyad Mosque of Aleppo, the Fistouq Mosque, Al-Atroush Mosque, Roumi Mosque, Mehmendar Mosque, and the list goes on.
Aleppo Citadel has seen some restoration work, and work is now ongoing to restore a damaged section of the wall.
The restoration of over 10 churches in Aleppo, such as Saint Elijah Maronite Cathedral, Armenian Forty Martyrs Cathedral, Armenian Evangelical Bethel Church, Greek Catholic Church, Greek Orthodox Church of the Dormition of our Lady, Cathedral of our Mother of Reliefs, and more.
Out of the 2000 electrical substations in the city that were damaged, 1615 substations have been rehabilitated. Of the 1615 rehabilitated substations, 900 serve residents while the remaining 715 serve the industrial sector of the city.
In 2020 alone, 240 residential and 125 industrial substations were rehabilitated.
Work is ongoing to rehabilitate the outer roads of Aleppo and the Damascus-Aleppo highway, in addition to the rehabilitation work of the Aleppo-Damascus railway - both of which are in their final stages.

Furthermore, the Aleppo International Airport has reopened.
Last month, the first phase of a rehabilitation project for a 3000-hectares segment of agricultural land in Aleppo’s southern countryside was launched.
The work to rehabilitate Aleppo Thermal Power Plant is ongoing, albeit slow. Contracts have been made with Iran for its rehabilitation.
The rehabilitation of Hamdaniyah Sports Stadium, and ongoing work to reopen the Aleppo International Stadium.
The rehabilitation and reopening of Aleppo National Museum.
Hundreds of building licenses have been issued over the years, and hundreds of structures have been rebuilt.
Numerous housing projects have begun - either to rehabilitate current housing or construct new housing. This includes the rebuilding of Hamdaniyah ”1080 Apartments”, Maasraniyah Youth Housing, Ashrafiyeh Youth Housing, and Hanano City.
Aleppo’s first real estate development zone has been made in Haydarieh neighbourhood (a damaged neighbourhood with informal housing), with work having begun since the end of 2019.
Some of the most important historical houses in old Aleppo been or are being restored, including Dar Al-Qanadeel, Dar Al-Zamaria, Beit Sissi, and Beit Qatarghasi.
Numerous important squares and square roundabouts have been or are being restored including the Saadallah Al-Jabri Square, Al-Hattab Square, Al-Almaji Square and Saba’ Bahrat roundabout.
The old alleys of Aleppo are seeing continuous restoration.
Parts of the old archaeological wall of Aleppo have been restored.

But there were 3 more primary cases for a total of 11 cases.

Xi clearly stated that China will not be contained, censured, or judged for its actions. He denounced Western ideals of human rights as "arrogance" and imperialism. After Covid and Biden's inauguration, he sees no nation with the strength or will to thwart China's ambitions.

Why should we be careful when talking about a “jobs bounce-back” in South Africa? - A THREAD.

You don’t get better labour market economists in South Africa than the @NIDS_CRAM team, but the main finding of an “employment bounce-back” seems counterintuitive. What’s going on? 1/n

NIDS-CRAM does NOT show a rebound to pre-COVID employment levels. They report 700,000 job lost between Feb and Oct 2020, this is massive = 3.85% fall (broad definition). The authors of the employment paper say this could be as high as 5.3% or 960,000 jobs.

The authors @joshbudlender @ihsaanbassier (+ Rocco) also show that Oct employment is normally higher than Feb employment, super roughly Oct is plausibly around 102% of Feb. This means it’s plausible 360,000 jobs would have been gained between Feb-Oct *anyway*.


This would mean - within the study parameters - it’s possible COVID has caused up to (an outer outer limit) of 1.32 million job losses when comparing Oct 2020 with what we would have expected it to be in normal times. This is a total disaster in the context of the SA economy.

This is roughly what we should expect from the StatsSA QLFS. This showed 2.2 million jobs lost in first half of 2020, and 543,000 regained in Q3, meaning a loss of just under 1.7 million jobs in first 9 months. We’d definitely expect some more jobs regained in Oct-Dec.

Christianity and islam may be the largest religion of today’s world but Sanatan dharm has the largest religious monument in the world in the form of Angkor wat. It is situated in combodia and spread across over 400 acres / 1.6 km².


It was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, which encouraged an international effort to save the complex.
It was originally built as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu. In Khmer, the Cambodian language, Angkor means "city" and Wat means "temple grounds".


So Angkor Wat means "Temple City". Its original name was Vrah Vishnuloka or Parama Vishnuloka, meaning the sacred dwelling of Vishnu in Sanskrit.
But, it gradually turned into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century & is still used for worship today.


Angkor Wat was initially designed and constructed in the first half of the 12th century, during the reign of Suryavarman II, as the king’s state temple and capital city. It was built without the aid of any machinery, as there was no machinery available at that time.


Evidence for these dates comes in part from inscriptions, which are vague, but also from the architectural design and artistic style of the temple and its associated sculptures.

Another aspect is that the five central towers of Angkor Wat symbolize the peaks of Mount Meru,

Black movie goers know which movies are for us and which films aren’t. We really don’t like our stories being made into films that center (and humanize) people that hate us. The filmmakers/studio know that by naming the film “The Green Book”, black movie goers...

...are going to be expecting a story about black people trying to safely navigate the country (real history) and instead will get a white savior film. Like folks went to see Detroit thinking it was about the riots...

Anywhoo, I know Mahershela is fantastic in it. He was the best thing about the trailer. As rich as the history behind the creation of ‘The Green Book’ is/was, as amazing as Dr. Don Shirley’s story is, WHY is this film about a random, racist driver and his family?

This feeds into the ignorant anti-Black American stereotype of “Black Americans don’t have any culture/history/mythology” or whatever. That our stories are still both being used while simultaneously erased in 2018 is wild to me. It’s gonna clean up come award season. 🤦🏾‍♀️

And now, if black filmmakers WANTED to make a film about The Greenbook, guess what it can’t be called🙃. Just like if someone wanted to make a film about the actual Detroit riots, guess what it can’t be called? Then those filmmakers would run into...
