One reason it really is difficult for some to wrap their heads around why it's fine that Trump is banned from Twitter is because "a private company can do what it wants" is an unsatisfying answer. And it really is unsatisfying, but it is also not the actual reason why it's fine.

The reason why it is fine is basic to cybernetics: the most unstable element of any system has the most influence over the system. Not control necessarily, but influence.

Trump is less *stable* in his messaging than Ayatollahs and the Chinese government, leaving aside the object-level horror of messages. He's less restrained than pornbots, and more powerful than a run-of-the-mill death threatener.

He's also the absolute center of world news and attention, every day.

Both the "censorship" and "private companies" crowds are arguing for a static abstraction in the face of a concrete dynamic.

And the concrete dynamic is that Twitter, headquartered and publicly traded in the US, with many employees who are difficult to easily replace, is being made unstable as both a communication venue and a company, by Trump's continued presence on the site.

There's growing willingness to acknowledge the ways in which Trump's work of building and clinging to power resemble Hitler's. Good.

But this week the history that keeps flashing in my mind isn't Nazi Germany, it's pre-WWII Japan's May 15 Incident.

Japan after WWI was a two-party parliamentary constitutional democracy. The government functioned reasonably well into the 30s, weathering the depression better than its peers in the US and Europe. 2/

But a right-wing anti-democratic cancer took root in the lower ranks of the Japanese military. This cancer led to Japan's invasion of Manchuria in 1931 and the assassination of a former cabinet minister in 1932. 3/

Then came the May 15 Incident in 1932. A group of young, low-ranking military officers and cadets launched a coup attempt and assassinated the prime minister. But the coup failed, and they turned themselves in and were tried for treason. 4/

The trial of the May 15 Incident perpetrators has come to be recognized as a key event in the disintegration of Japan's constitutional government and its descent into totalitarianism. 5/

The claims being made by various pseudo-left tendencies that the seriousness of the events in Washington should not be exaggerated, that it is wrong to refer to a coup, are dangerously complacent.

Jacobin magazine, which is affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America, argues against “social media posts and liberal magazines of record [that] immediately characterized the rampage as a coup.”

The danger of fascistic violence, Jacobin claims, is minimal because the ruling class supports democracy. It writes: “The takeover of the Capitol has laid bare the lack of backing, both among corporate elites and within state institutions, for far-right authoritarianism. [...]

[...] Capital, it seems, is still committed to liberal democracy, which has served to safeguard its interests throughout American history.” [end of Jacobin quote]

After all the jokes, my serious take:

By the numbers, no person in all of human history has shared a greater number of conspiracy theories with a greater number of people than Donald Trump did through social media.

This pipeline is now cut off, which is a "really big deal."

For our LikeWar book, I actually read every Trump tweet, going back to his first.

The sheer scale of not just the lies and insults in mindnumbing obviously, but he was also notable for just how many conspiracy theories he fed fire too long before presidency.

It hit topics from well known ones like his birtherism to other ones that are even more despicable now like aiding anti-vaxxers. Indeed, on that last one, my worry was that after Biden came in, he would pivot back to that theme, to stoke anger and bring attention back to himself

We argued in book that the path to making the internet less toxic are the superspreaders. IE, just like in public health, instead of trying to police everyone, focus on those key nodes that effect everyone.

Well, the largest superspreader of proven false conspiracy theories in human history is finally unable to operate in the same way.

Am I glad Trump was impeached again? Not really. I am glad people are catching up with politics - there has been a lot of learning going on - but the future presents some difficulties, and lots of people lack post impeachment, post sedition experience.

I see columnists writing with a prophetic eye, tackling the question "What's next?", but they really don't understand what has happened so far. The denials that were registered at the podium by Republicans were BRUTALLY ignorant and irrational.
