 ...96 of Ontario’s 626 LTC homes have been outsourced, where the owner of the license has contracted a third party to operate the home. As of publication date, there have been 506 COVID-19 deaths in outsourced homes- 34% higher than homes that have not been outsourced.
Outsourcing is most prevalent among for-profit homes, but it happens across the industry: of the outsourced homes, 61 are for-profit, 30 are non-profit, and 5 are municipal.
Non-profit & municipal homes that have outsourced their operations had death rates that were 105% higher (3.68 per 100 beds) than non-profit & municipal homes that did not (1.79 deaths/100 beds).

It’s not enough to ask who owns the home; it’s also a question of who operates it.

“They have this horrific situation where every week I go in, they would have a different group of PSWs,” says James Ha, the son of a #TendercareLTC resident, whose troubles w/ Extendicare started 2 years before the pandemic.
“They have one [staff member] going around feeding 10 people in the hour of the feeding, & so each person gets about 6 minutes. So basically when they go in, they would just shove the spoon into their mouth, and half [..] of it will go on the bib,” Ha alleges.
Despite what she saw, Ha’s mother asked her children not to complain too much, fearing Thanh would face the repercussions.

On Dec 12, Tendercare experienced its first COVID-19 resident case. W/n a week, cases had climbed to 92 & 7 deaths. This prompted the province to send in an inspector on Dec 16. IPAC practices were found to be so lacking that the home failed to comply with ministry regulations.
Pat Armstrong (love her), a sociologist in the field of long-term care and professor at York University, has studied long-term care in Canada and around the world, and recognizes these issues as appearing time and again.
Armstrong’s research took her to LTC homes run by a variety of for-profit companies across 🇨🇦 that provide outsourced services: she found that in some cases, contracted-out staff were instructed not to speak to the residents...because it was seen as inefficient (🤬🤬🤬🤬)
Extendicare & its subsidiaries have been named in a number of class-action lawsuits since the pandemic began, the latest of which covers all Extendicare facilities & seeks $200 million in damages, alleging the company failed to adequately respond to C19- that it was negligent.
Extendicare Assist’s largest client is Southbridge Care Homes, the owner of Orchard Villa, the Pickering LTC home with the second-highest number of deaths in the province.
Our analysis shows that the Southbridge-Extendicare combination has a COVID-19 fatality rate of 7.68 per 100 beds—a full 108 percent higher than industry average—the deadliest among all outsourcing arrangements in the province.
Watching Southbridge-Extendicare take over Orchard Villa in 2015 meant witnessing an immediate, steady decline in the quality of care provided at the home, say family members of former residents.

When I joined Google, I fell in love with the company immediately. I was excited to come to work, not just for the technical challenges, but because I really felt I was making a difference and working for the good guys.

I spent 20% of my week working on an app that helped people find lost loved ones after natural disasters. I spent more free time speaking to students about technology and diversity. For an entire school year, I taught CS classes twice a week at a local low income high school.

The company was open. We had a weekly meeting called TGIF where anyone in the company could ask questions of, and raise concerns with, the execs. We got real answers.

I've always appreciated his outspokenness.

2/ The hardest thing for most startups today is the path to market: first finding product-market fit & a way to reach customers, then building a ruthless machine to acquire, monetize & retain them.

3/ Because of this, when the VC industry invests capital into fast growing startups today, the plurality (if not majority) of invested capital will go into user acquisition and ad spending, for better or worse— usually worse.

4/ Todays massive venture-backed advertising, sales, and user acquisition playbook has morphed into one that champions growth at any cost.

This is creating a big bill that will soon come due...

5/ Ad impressions and click-throughs are bid up to outrageous prices by startups flush with venture money, and prospective users demand more and more subsidized products to gain their initial attention.

There is no better way of learning the craft of product, or proving your potential to employers, than just doing it.

You do not need anybody's permission. We don't have diplomas, nor doctorates. We can barely agree on a single standard of what a Product Manager is supposed to do.

But – there is at least one blindingly obvious industry consensus – a Product Manager makes Products.

And they don't need to be kept at the exact right temperature, given endless resource, or carefully protected in order to do this.

They find their own way.

Last weekend, I made a threat on the ongoing #SocialMedia shutdown in Uganda and some implications on the future of #internet & Uganda's #digital agenda.

The thread attracted a lot of engagement and questions. Tonight, I will share some final thoughts on the subject. (1)

Conceptually, social media sites are the largest on-boarding platforms for internet users in Uganda. Notably, Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram & Snapchat attract the highest internet traffic- which drives demand for other platform services e.g Google and Zoom recently.


So- when we talk about an "open internet", we mean the FULL resources of the internet. Any encumberance on selected applications has ripple effects across the entire network thus jeorpadizing standardization of internet/data transmission which is essential for innovation & growth


Furthermore, shutdowns hinder network interoperability (technical ability to plug/link one digital product or service into another product or service). Interoperability is the heart of the "Internet of things" eg business, devices, networks, services, e-govt, integration etc #IoT


Because the internet is a global resource, shutdowns enhance a digital divide (the gap between demographics and regions that have access to modern ICTs, and those that don't or have restricted access). Ironic that 3rd world countries have the highest number of shutdowns globally.

The Straddle is my favorite trade these days. But more often than not, one needs to adjust to make a good return from it. There are many ways to do this depending on your view, psychology and imagination. Will discuss a few that I use

The Straddle is a delta neutral strategy and it is important to keep deltas in check during the course of the Trade and not let them run away from you. Of course Volatility is the elephant in the room- but not going there as that will require a separate discussion

The first and most common method is to go 'inverted.' That is to say to shift the untested side to generate additional Premium and increase the runway to Breakeven. So if you start with a Straddle at 700 and price goes to 740, you can move the PE up to say 720.

How much should you move the untested side? While again this is a matter of skill, experience and artistry, the rule of thumb is to cut deltas by half. Remember, prices will move and you have to allow sufficient room for them to fluctuate

The second method is to shift the entire Straddle in the direction of the move. So if you have a 700 Straddle and Price goes to 740, you can shift the Straddle to 720. If you time this right, it can generally be done at virtually no cost or minimal cost.

Muhiyudin Sayyid Abdul Qadir Jilani (RA) was one of the greatest Islamic Saint, Scholar, and Jurist. The honorific Muhiyudin denotes his status with many Sufis as a "reviver of religion". Jilani refers to his place of birth. He also carried the epithet Baghdadi.

Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani was born on the eve of the 2nd of Ramadan 470 AH. His birth was a great blessing for the Ummah. It was the arrival of the Sultan al-Awliya (King of the Awliya) of that era, which had been foretold for centuries before his birth.

When Hazrat Abdul Qadir Jillani was asked by someone what brought him to his high spiritual level, he said, The truthfulness which I promised to my mother. He related the following story:

भृगु ऋषि सत्यवती से कहते हैं,"पुत्री तुम्हारा और तुम्हारी माता ने एक दुसरे के चरू खा लिए हैं।इस कारण तुम्हारा पुत्र ब्राह्मण होते हुए भी क्षत्रिय सा आचरण करेगा और तुम्हारी माता का पुत्र क्षत्रिय होकर भी ब्राह्मण सा आचरण करेगा।"
इस पर सत्यवती ने भृगु ऋषि से बड़ी विनती की।


सत्यवती ने कहा,"मुझे आशीर्वाद दें कि मेरा पुत्र ब्राह्मण सा ही आचरण करे।"तब महर्षि ने उसे ये आशीर्वाद दे दिया कि उसका पुत्र ब्राह्मण सा ही आचरण करेगा किन्तु उसका पौत्र क्षत्रियों सा व्यवहार करेगा। सत्यवती का एक पुत्र हुआ जिसका नाम जम्दाग्नि था जो सप्त ऋषियों में से एक हैं।
