10 Powerful Lessons From the Book “The Art of the Good Life”

| Book Review Thread

1. Peak-end Rule:

You remember the high point and the end point of your holiday, but the rest is forgotten.

Remind to make them as sweet as possible.

2. Plans are nothing. Planning is everything.

A good life is not a stable state or condition.

The good life is only achieved through constant readjustment.

3. Inflexibility as a Stratagem

When it comes to important issues, flexibility isn’t an advantage – it’s a trap.

Use radical inflexibility to reach long-term goals that would be unrealizable if their behavior were more flexible.

4. Reality Doesn’t Care About Your Feelings

Accepting reality is easy when you like what you see, but you’ve got to accept it even when you don’t – especially when you don’t.

10 Powerful Lessons of the book “The Art of Thinking Clearly”

| Thread 🧵

1. Never underestimate the hard work and lower probability of success, just because we are shown more successful people than many more actual failures.

It does not mean, in any way, that you should not dream big. It just says that dont get overawed by the number of success stories you read and assume that success would be easy. No one prints the failure stories.

2. Confirmation bias is the mother of all misconceptions.

It is a tendency to interpret new information so that it becomes compatible with our existing theories.

Warren Buffet has seen people losing money with this because they ignore facts which contradict the theory in the mind of the investor.

Dis-confirming evidence must be seeked out to beat this theory.

15 Powerful Lessons from the book "Antifragile"

by Nassim Nicholas Taleb

| Thread

1. The book is about decision-making under uncertainty/volatility.

- EVERYTHING either benefits or is harmed by volatility

- The FRAGILE is harmed (think a glass)

- The ROBUST is unchanged (think The Phoenix)

- The ANTIFRAGILE gets better (think The Hydra)

2.

- There is no way to accurately predict WHICH events will occur

- We CAN measure how fragile we are to events

- We CAN take steps to robustify ourselves

- When shit hits the fan, the fragile breaks

- This applies to the economy, politics, health, etc

3. Naive Interventionism

- Systems are COMPLEX

- Most are beyond our understanding

- When we intervene, we introduce potential harm

- These 2nd and 3rd order effects introduce MORE volatility into the system

- This makes systems even less predictable

- STAY in YOUR lane

4. Via Negativa: Removing is superior to Adding

- Less can be More

- Don't add, subtract

- Eliminate the Artificial

- Eliminate the Unnatural

- Eliminate the Unnecessary

Apply these in all areas of your life. When in doubt, SUBTRACT

The most powerful paradoxes of life:

The Persuasion Paradox

Have you noticed that the most argumentative people rarely persuade anyone?

The most persuasive people don’t argue—they observe, listen, and ask questions.

Argue less, persuade more.

Persuasion is an art that requires a paintbrush, not a sledgehammer.

The Effort Paradox

You have to put in more effort to make something appear effortless.

Effortless, elegant performances are often the result of a large volume of effortful, gritty practice.

Small things become big things. Simple is not simple.

The Wisdom Paradox

“The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.” — Albert Einstein

The more you learn, the more you are exposed to the immense unknown.

This should be empowering, not frightening.

Embrace your own ignorance. Embrace lifelong learning.

The Growth Paradox

Growth takes a much longer time coming than you think, and then it happens much faster than you ever would have thought.

Growth happens gradually, then suddenly.

When you realize this, you start to do things differently.

The Paradoxes of Desire: 🧵

The Pain Paradox

Desire creates pain in our lives.

But living a life void of desire is equally, if not more, painful.

The Intensity Paradox

The more intensely you desire something, the harder it seems to attain.

If you don’t desire something with enough intensity, you never do what's required to attain it.

The Risk Paradox

We desire comfort, security, and safety.

But nothing we desire can be obtained without risk.

The More Paradox

We are driven by a desire for "more."

When we get it, it's not enough.

28 sentences that'll teach you more about human psychology than a 4 year psychology degree:

You don't value enough what you already have.

You cannot have thoughts without using any language.

Your 1 negative thought is as powerful as 5 positive thoughts.

You can change your past by changing the underlying meaning of those memories.

One thing that goes unremarked about Wikipedia: the vast majority of the content was written over 12 years ago—which means (given turnover) that the editors dominant today were not directly involved in that creation.

Put another way, the editors who built the dominant nodes in this network...

...have little overlap with the ones who made this much more recent managerial flowchart.

Internet time runs at hundred-fold speed—the difference between the people who painted what's in the Uffizi, and the people in charge of keeping those paintings from deteriorating. Very different tasks, and (one presumes) very personalities as well. @PaulSkallas?

Your Most PRECIOUS Currencies:

-Energy

-Time

-Attention

-Trust

-Love

-Loyalty

-Respect

Only give these currencies to high value people. Never spend these currencies on low value shitheads eg: trolls, weasels, snakes, naysayers etc.

'Wait, I thought money was the most important currency?'

Nah.

Once you adopt abundance mentality, you realize their is no shortage of money.

Making the dollars your most important currency will have you leading an empty life.

Time to flip your perspective.

👇

▪Energy

When you strip yourself to the core, you are an emotional creature.

Emotions are your internal worlds energy.

Harnessing that energy is crucial for leveraging yourself to obtain whatever you want.

You have a finite amount everyday, so spend it wisely.

▪Time

A second that is lost will never be returned.

You start valuing the hell out of this currency the more you mature.

As the years start adding up, you realize time is precious.

You must always have a scarcity mindset towards time.

Once you do so, you will not be lazy.

▪Attention

You can be here, but not present.

Attention is completely mental.

Giving someone your attention means you are clearing up mental bandwidth to make room for them.

Only give your attention to people who help you grow.

For the negative ones?

Ignore their existence
