WHAT IS OPEN INTEREST, HOW TO ANALYZE IT AND DOES IT WORK?

In the thread I'll explain everything about Open interest and also all the tools used to analyze it and my personal opinion.

THIS IS THE ONLY THREAD YOU'LL EVER NEED ON OPEN INTEREST.

 1: What is Oi?

Support if Mr A buys 10 lots of 17000ce in Nifty and Mr B sells 10 lots of call in Nifty then the total Oi on 17000 strike price will be 10.

So Oi is basically the number of outstanding contracts which are not squared off.
2: What is Oi used for?

Oi is only used to determine support and resistance on a particular strike price.
For eg: Nifty 16000pe has the highest Oi and 16200pe has to highest Oi.

So 16000 and 16200 level can be considered as good supports.

In the same way, 16500 ce has highest Oi and it can be considered as a resistance.
3: But why?

Highest Oi at 16500ce indicates that highest number of people have sold it BUT it also means that highest number of people have Bought it!

If 16500 acts as resistance, the option will go to 0 and all the buyers will lose money.
So why do we consider it as resistance?

Why do we look at things from an option seller's perspective?
4: It is generally said that option sellers have deep pockets and they will do anything to protect their position.

And also most of the option sellers are positional hence considering things from their perspective can work .

But there's a catch!
5: Before that I'll explain the different tools/ways used to analyse oi

- Total Oi.
I've explained it already in the above example. 16200pe,16000pe on the put side have highest Oi
And 16500ce and the highest TOTAL OI on the call side. Hence we can expect market to trade between this range.
- Change in Oi

Change in oi represents the total change in Oi "TODAY" or present day/right now.

For example 16300pe has the highest addition on change in oi.

Hence we can expect 16300pe to be a good support since option sellers are building their postions.
- Intraday unwinding:

Taking the above example, lets say if market starts to trade below 16300, then the change in Oi figure of 69k at 16300pe will start to drop.

This indicates that 16300pe writers are giving up and this is a bearish sign.
- Positional unwinding:

If the change in Oi figure, starts to turn negative , then it means that the positional option writers are giving up which is a stronger sign.
For example: The change in oi at 16200ce is negative(-4.9k) which clearly indicates that 16200 call writers have given up indicating bullishness in the market.
6: What should you consider?

Out of these 4 tools what should you consider?

So there is no black and white answer you have to take reference from these tools and form your own view. You have to look at everything.
7: DO I BELIEVE OI STILL WORKS?

NO!

In 2018, Total Oi used to work very well.
In2019, Change in Oi was working very well.

But in 2020, Oi completely stopped working.
8: From 2020, the strikes with the highest oi started to breach.

Earlier it was very rare to see the strikes with highest oi get breached. Market used to perfectly respect it. But that's not the case now.
9: For eg: In Banknifty the oi gets built on every 500pts interval.

If Banknifty is at 35800, then 36000ce will have highest oi and 35000pe will have highest oi.

If Banknifty goes above 36000 , then 36000ce oi will start to drop
and 36000pe will start to build up. Hence the edge is lost.

Oi will keep on building and unwinding at every 500 pts strike price Which does make it useful in 2022.

HOW TO DO SHORT STRANGLES TO MAKE 1% WEEKLY INCOME CONSISTENTLY?

I've made majority of my money by short strangles and I'll explain one very easy short strangle strategy which you guys can follow.

I'll also explain the adjustments and risk management.

1: What days it should be done?

It has to be done on Monday to thursday.

You can skip Fridays as there's negligible decay and big delta moves.

2: Preferred Instrument:

Banknifty will be the preferred instrument, since it's high risk and high reward.

Moreover it has good premiums.

3: Criteria:

It has to be done when Banknifty is inside a range on the 15 min chart.

As we can see here, it was June 6th Monday and Banknifty was in a perfect range, which makes it ideal for short strangles.


4: Positon sizing:

Although we'll hedge our positions but you strictly don't have to use the margin benefit which you will receive.

Ideal qty which be 6 lots on each side on a 10L rs capital and 3 lots on 5L capital

HOW TO USE TECHNICAL ANALYSIS TO FORM A WEEKLY VIEW

Got many DMs about how I form my weekly view in Banknifty and how do I analyze it.

In this thread I'll show you how I do it so that anyone can analyze Banknifty and other instruments the right way.

1: Weekly timeframe

One Should start analyzing with a weekly time on candlestick charts.

As you can see there is a clear resistance at 41940 level on weekly charts and a clear support on at 32000 level on the Banknifty chart.

Hence this is our bigger term range.


But the previous week's candle is a bearish candle hence our bias for the current week stays sell on rise.

2: Daily timeframe

Next step will be to analyse the daily timeframe charts to refine our view further.

JESSE LIVERMORE is considered the greatest trader of all time.

He was the richest person in the world during his time.

I've read majority of his books and picked out learnings which are relevant even today with examples of the current scenario.


1: Remember that stocks are never too high for you to begin buying or too low to begin selling.

This principle still holds true today in trading, especially trend following.

Most people think if a stock has run up too much, then it's price is high and it will reverse.

But a trader should always be on the right side of a trend.

For eg: Asianpaints has been making new highs constantly, the major money would've been by the people who were on the right side of the trend i.e long.


Never buy it just because it has fallen too much. Instead short it and make money.

2: “Being a little late in a trade is insurance that your opinion is correct.”

It's okay to enter in a trade after you have received confirmation from the market.

Trading after confirmation will make your sacrifice your profits but it will also protect you against the loss

MY TOP 10 POINTS TO BECOME A BETTER TRADER

Listing down some of my top learnings which has helped me improve my trading to a great extent and will help you too.

1: Always stay on the right side on trend.

The biggest money is made by being with the trend, not against it.

Traders who made it big were always trend followers.

2: Don't ever underestimate risk.

Big losses usually happens when a trader ignores risk management when he's on a winning streak.

Overconfidence usually leads to poor risk management which ultimately causes destruction.

3: Taking Risk on Profits made:

A trader should always take high risk trades on the profit which he has already made and not on his principal.

It's much easier to take risks on the profits than taking risk on principal capital and losing it.

4: Patience

Success in trading comes with patience. One should be willing to wait atleast 2 years before giving up trading.

You drastically improve your odds of success even if you just survive for a couple of years without losing much money.

Ever wondered y gamma is the enemy of straddle / strangle sellers and what it means?

Presume readers are aware of option Greeks meaning...

To understand , first ...

Relationship between delta, gamma, theta and option premium.
....

Theta + (int Rate x Underlying price x Delta) + ( 0.5 x variance of underlying x Underlying price x Underlying Price x Gamma ) = Int rate x Option premium.

Strangle and straddles are delta neutral setup;For a delta neutral setup, the second term becomes zero; Hence,

= Int rate x option premium

Straddle and strangles have typically zero delta at initiation; they also have positive theta, meaning they gain over time assuming other components of option r constant ..

In a delta neutral portfolio, if theta is largely +ve , Gamma will be -ve by a large extent to satisfy the above relation mathematically, which means that as expiry nears the strangles and straddles will have large -ve gamma; This is wat u see traders telling gamma effect.

The Straddle is my favorite trade these days. But more often than not, one needs to adjust to make a good return from it. There are many ways to do this depending on your view, psychology and imagination. Will discuss a few that I use

The Straddle is a delta neutral strategy and it is important to keep deltas in check during the course of the Trade and not let them run away from you. Of course Volatility is the elephant in the room- but not going there as that will require a separate discussion

The first and most common method is to go 'inverted.' That is to say to shift the untested side to generate additional Premium and increase the runway to Breakeven. So if you start with a Straddle at 700 and price goes to 740, you can move the PE up to say 720.

How much should you move the untested side? While again this is a matter of skill, experience and artistry, the rule of thumb is to cut deltas by half. Remember, prices will move and you have to allow sufficient room for them to fluctuate

The second method is to shift the entire Straddle in the direction of the move. So if you have a 700 Straddle and Price goes to 740, you can shift the Straddle to 720. If you time this right, it can generally be done at virtually no cost or minimal cost.

My dad led an organization of over 300,000 employees.

When I took on my biggest marketing & events team to date (35 employees) I asked him how the *heck* he did it. Here's what he said and what helped me every day. 🧵

Remember you're leading all the employees under you, but you're not *managing* them all. You're managing your direct reports, which should be 5-7 individuals max. Focus on them.

When you interact with the employees you don't manage directly, get to know them as people first, that'll be the most valuable information in leading them. Remembering everything you learn about them is hard, but doing so will make you a superhero.

If you're not going to empower the managers under you, why do you have them? If you see room for improvement, let the manager know and let them make the change on their teams and come to you with questions/concerns. This will save you SO much time.

If you're the smartest person in any room - you're doing it wrong. As a leader, your job is bringing together the best people to get the job done - your skillset is identifying those people, not being one of them.

महर्षि ने यज्ञ किया,विनता व कद्रू को आशीर्वाद देकर तपस्या करने चले गए। कुछ काल पश्चात कद्रू ने हज़ार अंडों से काले सर्पों को जन्म दिया व विनता ने एक अंडे से तेजस्वी बालक को जन्म दिया जिसका नाम गरूड़ रखा।जैसे जैसे समय बीता गरुड़ बलवान होता गया और कद्रू के पुत्रों पर भारी पड़ने लगा


परिणामस्वरूप दिन प्रतिदिन कद्रू व विनता के सम्बंधों में कटुता बढ़ती गयी।एकदिन जब दोनो भ्रमण कर रहीं थी तब कद्रू ने दूर खड़े सफेद घोड़े को देख कर कहा,"बता सकती हो विनता!दूर खड़ा वो घोड़ा किस रंग का है?"
विनता बोली,"सफेद रंग का"।
तो कद्रू बोली,"शर्त लगाती हो? इसकी पूँछ तो काली है"।

DEVI KARUMARIAMMAN, THIRUVERKADU (TN)

Devi is worshipped here as both Swayambhu (self-manifested) and as Parashakti (with 4 arms holding skull,sword,trishul,udukkai/damru).

Here, Muruga got Vel from Devi to fight Suran. So the place was called Vel kadu which became Verkadu.


It is said that there was an anthill here long ago. Devi appeared in the dream of a devotee and asked him to build a shrine at that spot. When the anthill was removed, the swayambhu murti of Devi emerged. So Devi is called Karuvil Illadha Karumari ( not in the womb of mother).


Once, Devi went to Surya in the form of an old woman but Surya neglected her. Devi’s anger made Surya lose his brightness.
To appease her, Surya said that His rays would fall on Her directly twice in a year and touch her feet. Also, Sunday is celebrated as day of Devi Karumari.


There is also a wooden image of Devi (Marachilai Amman) here. Devotees offer locks to her in the belief that She would safe guard their houses.
Temple tank (Thiruchamber Poigai) is said to have been created by Subramanya. Taking dip in it is said to cure skin related disorders.
