Thread : Trading Applications that I use on a daily basis🧵

1) After putting a detailed post on hardware & multi-monitor setup. Few asked for softwares I use for trading.

So I am listing softwares/apps which I find the most useful for trading & investing

2) Trading View or Kite app

I use trading view for intraday charts.

As I trade intraday, I use the 5 min time frame.

My chart is simple with 20 sma plotted on it along with CPR(central pivot range)

Price > 20 sma & CPR indicates bullish trend for intraday & vice-versa

3) Icharts

As I majorly trade option premiums(short volatility or theta decay strategies)

I keep a track of combined premium of strangle using @iChartsIndia

Combined premium should be trending down & below VWAP to create a strangle

4) QuantsApp

As I need to provide analysis on TV channel.

I need to analyse overall market breadth, futures data & option chain activitiy.

Options Thread

How options allows to change and adjust view dynamically.
Let’s understand with a live example.

Example : Nifty is at 11921 and you are bullish on Nifty.

1) Buy Naked 11900 CE(call) at 167

Breakeven : 12068
Max Loss : Rs 12555
Max Profit : Unlimited

2) Now your view changes from bullish to slightly bullish so you can convert naked call into a bull call spread by selling 12100 CE at 72

Breakeven : 11996
Max Loss : Rs 7100
Max Profit : Rs 7800

3) Now your changes from slightly bullish to slightly bearish. You can convert the bull call spread into a ratio spread by selling more 2 calls of 12100 CE

Breakeven : 12224
Max Loss : Unlimited above 12224

4) Now if your view changes to sideways then you can buy 2 lots of 12200 CE to convert the ratio spread in a butterfly spread.

Thread: Risk hai toh ishq hai ?

1) A lot of people talking about today’s freak trade in 37100 PE in BNF

We as traders are always exposed to various types of risk and it’s a part of our business.

Let me highlight certain risk faced in past years & also ways to manage it

2) Gap Risk

18th may 2009

Markets opened at 9:55 AM as this was the market opening time at that time
Nifty immediately hit an 20 % upper circuit at 10.01 am and the markets froze.
So markets were open only for 6 minutes.

There are many such instances of overnight gaps

3) Vega Risk

On 24th August 2015, the Indian markets declined close to 5.92%.

Nifty around 490 points but something unusual happened on that day.

Far otm Call options shot up inspite of such a huge fall😲

Vix shot up 64%

4)Gamma Risk

26th sept 2019

It was an expiry day and 30000 CE went from 50 to 1000+ in minutes and eventually closed at 0

This move caused lot of leveraged traders to lose a significant amount of their capital
Many such instances of gamma risk on expiry day

5) Flash Crash

31st may 2019

Flash crash in Banknifty of 1000+ points.

Friday’s high of the Bank Nifty was 31,783 and the low point of the index was 30,623

Such flash crash has been seen in many stocks as well on other instances

How to manage strangles dynamically incase of a violent move or IV spike ?

1) Yesterday and infact entire last week if you had created strangles you would have experienced that during upmove only call side were increasing but puts weren’t decaying.

2)In morning I had created a short strangle
200 lots 25000 PE sell at 102
200 lots 27000 CE sell at 161

You can sell from below image that if I had waited in this strangle till day end I would have lost around -4.5 L

So lets see what all adjustments did I do logically.

3)After creating strangles the premiums strarted increasing as puts were not decaying and calls were increasing.
So I had kept 100 lots buy on 26500 CE at 400(day high)
My buy got executed at 400 around 12:15 pm & I exited 25000 PE at 75

4) I had kept more 100 lots buy at 435 (recent high made during upmove till now)

The buy got executed at 12:15 pm
So my current open postions now were

200 lots 26500 buy at average 420
200 lots 27000 CE sell at 161

5) Logic:
As short strangles are basically short vol so if there is a movement on one side with no decay then one can start buying atm calls.
What this does is it converts your strangles into ratio spread and if move continues eventually into a debit spread

How to manage straddles :

1) As bnf open was within yesterday range created a 29000 straddle at around 9:30 am

29000 PE sold at 528 and
29000 CE sold at 453

2) Instead of keeping SL on sold legs. I keep SL on otm options in the system

SL was on 28000 PE at 220 (day high)
SL was on 30000 CE at 165 (day high)

3) At 10:15 am, Bnf started to trend down and 28000 PE was bought at 220 and I immediately bought 30000 CE at 110

4) If you look at the straddle chart, there were lot of intraday spikes and your SL would have been hit if you had kept SL on atm sold legs

5) But after lot of intraday spikes the straddle from 980 closed at 880. A 100 point decay intraday.

But even if both your buy option got triggered you would have made around 15-20 points inspite of such violent moves on both sides.

Why are Indian businesses like Saregama / Tips selling for 11x, 20x their sales?

If I include all of the revenue generated by entire firm, its selling for ~4.5x FY20 Sales

FY 20 Revenues ~ 8.87 B USD or 7.4B EUR

Catalogue of Music includes every international artist you can possibly name

Either Universal is grossly undervalued or Saregama/Tips are grossly overvalued.

If you see the ebitda of universal music its low 20% compared to our saregama 30% or tips 50%. So when you compare earnings saregama is 40x and tips is 30x and universal music is 30x. Also these type of companies are less( low or no capex with excellent and growinh cashflows)

En un principio, Brendel no se sentía muy convencido por las ejecuciones “históricas”. Sin embargo, para él la obra de Bach es menos dependiente de los instrumentos contemporáneos que la de Monteverdi, Domenico Scarlatti, Purcell, Rameau y Couperin.

Capítulo: “Conversations - Talking to Brendel with Jeremy

Ya casi llegamos al final de este maravilloso libro. En esta sección, Brendel comparte varias entrevistas. La primera de ellas fue en 1972 con Jeremy Siepmann, músico, locutor, articulista y autor de varios libros sobre música.

Si bien después de 377 hojas ya tenemos una buena idea sobre las opiniones de de Brendel sobre la música y el quehacer musical, en esta entrevista revela varios puntos de vista.

Sobre si disfruta interpretar música, Brendel responde que sí, sobre todo en los últimos años, “when I’ve had the impression that much of what I do comes across. Of course, one very rarely knows if the right things come across)”.

Sobre si los intérpretes existen para vincular al compositor con el público, Brendel afirma que le interesa más la relación del intérprete con el compositor que con el público: “What fascinates me is to make sense of a piece of music while it sounds”.

En esta conversación de 1979, Alfred Brendel y Konrad Wolff, autor de “The Teaching of Artur Schnabel. A Guide to Interpretation”, discuten sobre ciertos puntos en los que Brendel no coincide con Schnabel.

Para Wolff, Brendel es el primer pianista desde Schnabel que ha gozado de plena autoridad en la interpretación de Mozart, Beethoven y Schubert. Además, en su opinión, su enfoque tiene mucho en común con el de Schnabel en los detalles de fraseo, tempo y dinámicas.

I'd like to say a few things in tribute to the brilliant musical director & vocal coach Kate Young, who died far too young last week. Even fellow musical theatre folk may not know what a trail-blazing talent she was, so here's my story of Kate (thread)/1

I first met Kate at a rehearsal for Wayne Sleep's 1983 touring dance show DASH, for which I was composer. What struck me first about her (apart from the poetic lilt of her warm, Edinburgh accent) was the impeccable care she was taking playing piano for dance rehearsals /2

(believe me, & I mean no disrespect to lovely dancers & choreographers but playing piano for dance sessions isn't called REPETITEUR for nothing and many repetiteurs switch to auto-pilot at the keys. Kate never did. Her playing was always immaculate)/3

We hit it off immediately & had long, ranty discussions about how we wanted to change musical theatre, like young people do. We had specific aims to do with the way singing was taught & shaped for the stage. /4

We wanted the singing to be much more text & meaning-focused, for actors to have the confidence to sing as well as trained singers & for the sound to be more nuanced, more plural in style & less belty & samey (tbh not sure we won that battle..) /5

Shahjahanpur was a hub of revolution during the freedom struggle. Most of the revolutioaries in the North, were from this town. And among them, the most famous were two friends, whom destiny would bring together- Ram Prasad Bismil and Ashfaqullah Khan.

Ashfaqullah Khan was born at the turn of the 20th century on October 22, while Bismil was born 3 years earlier on June 11, in the same town. Both of them were excellent writers in Urdu and Hindi.

Both of them would come together under the Hindustan Republican Association, not to mention the fact that Ashfaq was an admirer of Bismil’s poetry, and became close friends with him on that account.

And both these men were hanged on the same date, December 19, 1927 for their involvement in the Kakori event. Two men from different religions, different backgrounds, yet destiny would bring them together.

one of the things i like about Batman is that it's fundamentally about being orphaned, and being an orphan — how this guy stays tethered to the world in his own weird, abstract, extrajudicial way when he feels that his link to it has been violently severed

Batman does this by permanently recapitulating his own trauma: solving crimes for other people, protecting them. But that's actually just the beginning; he also recapitulates his own experience of orphanness by essentially raising several orphans

Dick is an orphan in the traditional sense: dead parents. Batman sees it happen. Jason, less so: missing dad, known mom who eventually dies. Tim, even less so: parents are around a while, and involved, before both dying. Carrie, even less than that: negligent parents.

Steph: evil father, who openly works against her. And then there's Damian, whose parents are both alive and yet both have identities that totally obliterate their role as his parents. He doesn't relate to them as a mother and father; he can't, and neither can they.

In all these different cases, Batman tries all these different ways of making orphanness for them not what it was for him: Either by trying to teach them the (arguably poor) coping skills early that he learned over a very long time, or by literally legally adopting them, etc.

❤✈️🌎 2 years ago today @JamesIvings and I sold all our belongings and left the UK to travel for a year. We've never been happier and we have no plans to ever return there 🙂

Since then we've started a remote web dev company @SquarecatWebDev and been lucky enough to have completed several freelance projects 💻 that have kept us on the road.

In the last few months we've become a huge part of this amazing new Maker community and have found so many new friends from @makerskitchen, @women_make_ and several others! 🥰

We love travelling together (even if I'm only a glorified laptop watcher 😒) but we're both much happier being able to share our ideas outside of our own little bubble and our products have benefitted too!

Here's to another year of nomading with my favourite person and to the Maker community continuing to grow with our help! Maybe one day we'll all get to meet each other ✌️ 💛
