By the blessings of Sri Maha Periyava, I have been able to do brain operations in India continuously in the government General Hospital in Madras

 from 1964 to 1992 and after I retired from government service, I have been in private hospitals for more than a decade. What is perhaps equally important is that I have been able to involve throughout these forty years in training several dozens of young doctors in neurosurgery
in the General Hospital, Chennai from 1964 to 1992 and in Apollo Hospital, Chennai recognized for DNB qualification in neurosurgery from 1992 onwards. In those days when a Brahmin boy went abroad and returned he was supposed to go to Rameswaram and have a bath in the ocean for
purification. Somehow although we are an orthodox family, I could not do this. Soon after my return I had to undergo surgery for hernia. Then I got married. Later I became very busy in hospital work and I could never get the time to plan a trip to Rameswaram. Sometime in 1975 I
went to Kancheepuram with my younger sister and niece to have darsanam of Maha Periyava. By that time I had already been abroad several times. An elderly Brahmin gentleman who had just come from Nigeria was present too to have darshan. There was a crowd of about sixty or seventy
persons and Maha Periyava talked for about an hour on my problem of going to Rameswaram. I am giving below the gist of the conversation His Holiness had with me.
His Holiness, while addressing the crowd of devotees: “This elderly gentleman had come from Nigeria to ask me if he
should do Prayaschittam for going abroad”. Turning to me he smiled “Probably, Kalyanaraman also had come because he has a selfish interest in this as to whether he should also go to Rameswaram”.

His Holiness: “How many versions of Ramayanam are there in India?”

SKR: “Probably
about a hundred”.
His Holiness: “There are about 300 languages and dialects in this country and probably an equal number of versions of Ramayanam. How did Rama and Sita return from Lanka to Ayodhya?”

SKR: By Pushpakavimanam.

His Holiness: “That is right. It is very interesting
that neither in Valmiki Ramayanam nor in any of the other 300 versions of Ramayanam there is any mention that Rama and others did prayaschittam after returning from Lanka. You may say that they travelled by air and prayaschittam is required only if you travel by sea.
Then He
mentioned the name of a Frenchman and asked if I had heard about him. I replied in negative.
His Holiness: “This man was a historian. He lived in India at the time of early Chola kings. At that time one of the daughters of the reigning King could not get suitable bridegroom in
India. In those days Hindu Kings were ruling over countries now known as Cambodia, Thailand, and Indonesia etc.” Have you been to Bangkok?

SKR: Yes.

HH: “Have you been to the famous Buddha temple there, which contains many pictures depicting the story of Ramayana in the
prakarams of the temple?”

SKR: Yes.

HH: “So the Chola king in south India chose a prince in Cambodia as his son-in-law. The prince came to India and married the princess. The royal couple accompanied by a large retinue of purohits, maids in waiting and servants returned by ship
to the bridegroom’s kingdom. After staying a few days there the purohits returned by ship to India. This French historian has given a very detailed day by day account of this marriage in his book. He has not mentioned that the purohits did Prayaschittam either on reaching
Cambodia or on returning to India.

Then His Holiness asked me: “How long does it take to go to America nowadays?”

SKR: It would take about eighteen hours and if there is a break of journey in London about twenty four hours.

Then His Holiness enlightened us:
“That is the real
point. In the Shastras it has been specifically stated that if one did not do nityakarmanushtanam (daily religious rituals like sandhya vandanam, samitadanam, agnihotram) for three days continuously one had to do prayaschittam. In those days practically everyone did their daily
religious duties. The only time they could not do so was when they travelled by sea as pure fresh water was not available for bath. That is why if they travelled by sea (for more than three days), they had to do prayaschittam. Probably the purohits reached Cambodia in two days
and Rama reached Ayodhya in a few hours. Therefore, there was no need for prayaschittam. If you apply that rule today, then some people in the present audience will need to do prayaschittam several times a year for omitting to do sandhya vandanam for three days in succession! One
need not go abroad to qualify oneself for doing prayaschittam!”

This is again a remarkable example of how His Holiness interprets the scriptures and gives simple anecdotes step by step to illustrate the point discussed, to a lay audience. Needless to say I was very much relieved
that I had not “sinned” by not going to Rameswaram! The occasion also reinforced my resolve never to omit Sandhya Vandanam or reciting the Gayathri manthram even for a single day.

His Holiness continued:
“Some people say that you should do prayaschittam only if you go to another
island. Is Africa an island?

SKR: Yes.

His Holiness: “No, Africa and Asia form single large mass of land. Only about a hundred years ago when the Suez Canal was dug by the Englishman, it technically became an island. In fact Australia, Asia, Africa and Europe were all one large
land mass and in the millions of years that have gone by, the land mass drifted away from one another with the oceans coming in between them and formed individual continents.”
Here again was another example of the vast knowledge of history, geography and geology that His Holiness
had mastered. He concluded by saying that neither the gentleman from Nigeria nor Dr. Kalyanaraman need to do prayaschittam because they have travelled for less than three days to reach India but everyone certainly had to do it if they had omitted Sandhya Vandanam for three days
or more!

கொள்ளாமல் யாசகம் எடுத்து ஜீவித்து வந்தவர் #வேதாந்ததேசிகர் பெரியவர்களாக யார் இருந்தாலும் அவர்களுக்கு விரோதிகள் இருப்பார்கள். அந்தப் பெரியவரை அவமானப்படுத்திப் பார்க்க வேண்டும் என்று சூழ்ச்சி செய்கிறவர்களும் இருப்பார்கள். ஸ்ரீவேதாந்த தேசிகருக்கும் இப்படிப்பட்ட விரோதிகள் இருந்தார்கள்

“ஸர்வதந்திர ஸ்வதந்திரர்” என்று போற்றப்படுபவர் தேசிகர், அதாவது வெளி உதவி எதுவும் இல்லாமலே தாமே எதையும் சாதிக்கக்கூடியவராக இருப்பவருக்கு இந்தப் பட்டம் அருளப்படும். அவருக்கு இது பொருந்தாது என உலகுக்குக் காட்டி அவரை அவமானப்படுத்து வேண்டும் என அவர் விரோதிகள் நினைத்து சூழ்ச்சி செய்தனர்

ordinances early as the three bills cleared by Parliament will adversely affect their business. There are over 30,000 registered Arhtiyas in Punjab and Haryana who are deeply entrenched in the system. They exercise a strong influence on agricultural activities and the politics of

both states. These 30,000 employ another 300,000 sub agents or sidekicks or people who would not have made it into doing anything anyplace were it not for the patronage network of these 30,000. But there are only 1500 farming villages in Punjab. 330,000 / 1500 is about 220 people

on average per village doing the work of middlemen.

அதனுடனே ஆலகால விஷமும் தோன்றியது. அனைத்து உயிர்களையும் காப்பாற்ற சிவபெருமான் அவ்விஷத்தை உண்டார். தன் கணவரின் உடலில் விஷம் பரவுவதைக்கண்ட பார்வதி தேவி தன் கரங்களால் அவரைத் தொட விஷம் சிவனின் நெஞ்சுக் குழியிலேயே நின்றுவிட அவர் நீலகண்டனானார். இந்த நேரம் தான் #பிரதோஷகாலம் என்று

கைலாயம் வந்து இறைவனை வணங்குகிறார்கள் என்பது புராணம். சிவாலயங்களில் அந்நேரத்தில் சிவனுக்குப் பால், தேன், தயிர், சந்தனம், பன்னீர், திருநீறு மற்றும் பஞ்சாமிர்தத்தால் அபிஷேகம் செய்து வில்வம், அரளி, தாமரை, மல்லிகை மலர்களால் அர்ச்சனை செய்து பின் தீபாராதனை செய்து வழிபாடு நடக்கிறது.

இறைவனுடன் கூடவே அவருடைய வாகனமான நந்தி தேவருக்கும் அபிஷேகம் நடைபெறும். இவருக்கு எண்ணெய், பால், தயிர், சந்தனம், இளநீர் ஆகியவையால் அபிஷேகமும் பின் அருகம் புல், பூ சாற்றிய பின் வில்வத்தால் அர்ச்சனை செய்வது வழக்கம். நந்தி தேவரது தீபாராதனைக்குப் பின் மூலவரான லிங்கத்திற்கு நடக்கும்

Those who distrust the Puranas maintain that they contain accounts that are not in keeping with day-to-day realities. The stories in the texts refer to the arrival and departure of celestials and of their awarding boons to devotees. To the critics such accounts


seem false. A woman is turned into a stone because of a curse, then the curse is broken with the grant of boon; or the sun is stopped from rising - such stories seem untrue to us because they are beyond the realms of possibility and refer to acts beyond our own capacity.
Since

such things do not happen these days, is it right to argue that they could not have occurred at any time? In the past the mantras of the Vedas had their own vibrant power because of the exemplary life led by those who chanted them. Then people practised severe austerities and

cultivated yogic power of a high order. These facts are borne out by ancient books. Through their mantras, austerities and yoga, people then could easily draw to themselves powers of a divine nature. Where there is light there is shadow. So with divine powers there also existed

demonic forces that could be seen in their gross form during those times. Today the war between the celestials and the demons is still being waged (the combat between good and evil). Eons ago people could perceive these forces of good and evil because of the special vision gained

THE BATTLE OF TALIKOTA and the destruction of Vijaynagar (Hampi)
26 January 1565

A tale of valor, deception and decimation.

A grim reminder that if we fail to protect our heritage, it will eventually crumble under the onslaught of "forces of anarchy".

This decisive battle was fought between the Vijayanagara empire and the Deccan sultanates resulting in a rout of Vijayanagara and ending the last major medieval era Hindu kingdom in south India.(1)

The seeds of 1565 encounter were sown more than 250 years earlier when the forces of the Delhi Sultanate, during the time of Alauddin Khilji and later Md Bin Tughlaq swept through southern India in an expansion spree.(2)

By middle of the 14th century, facing rebellions, Tughlaq withdrew to Delhi, leaving behind 2 empires, Bahmani, which ruled the Deccan from Kalaburagi, and Vijayanagara, which ruled most south India with its capital at Vijayanagar.(3)

The Raichur Doab, between the Krishna and Tungabhadra rivers, existed as a natural boundary between these two kingdoms, with wars often breaking out over control of this territory.(4)

DEVI KARUMARIAMMAN, THIRUVERKADU (TN)

Devi is worshipped here as both Swayambhu (self-manifested) and as Parashakti (with 4 arms holding skull,sword,trishul,udukkai/damru).

Here, Muruga got Vel from Devi to fight Suran. So the place was called Vel kadu which became Verkadu.


It is said that there was an anthill here long ago. Devi appeared in the dream of a devotee and asked him to build a shrine at that spot. When the anthill was removed, the swayambhu murti of Devi emerged. So Devi is called Karuvil Illadha Karumari ( not in the womb of mother).


Once, Devi went to Surya in the form of an old woman but Surya neglected her. Devi’s anger made Surya lose his brightness.
To appease her, Surya said that His rays would fall on Her directly twice in a year and touch her feet. Also, Sunday is celebrated as day of Devi Karumari.


There is also a wooden image of Devi (Marachilai Amman) here. Devotees offer locks to her in the belief that She would safe guard their houses.
Temple tank (Thiruchamber Poigai) is said to have been created by Subramanya. Taking dip in it is said to cure skin related disorders.

The Ludhiana Political Agency (Later NW Fronties Prov) was formed by less than 4000 British soldiers who advanced from Delhi and reached Ludhiana, receiving submissions of all sikh chiefs along the way. The submission of the troops of Raja of Lahore (Ranjit Singh) at Ambala.

Dabistan a contemporary book on Sikh History tells us that Guru Hargobind broke Naina devi Idol Same source describes Guru Hargobind serving a eunuch
YarKhan. (ref was proudly shared by a sikh on twitter)
Gobind Singh followed Bahadur Shah to Deccan to fight for him.


In Zafarnama, Guru Gobind Singh states that the reason he was in conflict with the Hill Rajas was that while they were worshiping idols, while he was an idol-breaker.

And idiot Hindus place him along Maharana, Prithviraj and Shivaji as saviours of Dharma.
