Many people have drawn parallels between white mobs of today and the historical violence of lynch mobs at home and imperialism abroad. But what I keep thinking about is colonization. What we saw on January 6th is the uncivilized, unchecked, entitled violence of colonizers.

This is how colonizers behave. They storm, they invade, they steal, they defecate, they destroy and they do so under the banner of freedom, liberty and self-proclaimed superiority.
The unapologetic embrace of brute force in the name of liberty is exactly what our founding fathers advocated. It's what we celebrate with every national holiday. It's what the Capitol actually represents. It's the ugly truth that even Democratic "leaders" are determined to deny.
The sad reality is that even if Democrats had the ovaries to hold violent insurrectionists accountable for the ongoing coup, their efforts would be in vain so long as they continue to ignore or -- worse, celebrate -- the colonial rot at the heart of our nation's project.
White supremacist colonialism explains why none of the words we are using to describe the "mob" are effective. Even the word "insurrectionists" fails. Within this system, white men are not just ALLOWED to be violent insurrectionists, they have historically been celebrated for it.
White male supremacy, colonialism and capitalism enable white men (particularly property owners) to exact gross violence without consequence, to impose/change/ignore laws and treaties as they wish and to coerce the capitulation or support of racial, gender and class subordinates
Democrats aren't doing anything about January 6th because they do not want to change the power system. Point, blank, period. They *want* to continue the colonial violence, the imperial wars, the looting of our collective resources by the corporations that keep them in office..
Democrat "leaders" do not want to hold anyone accountable. They want to return to the white supremacist colonial norm so that they get on with the business of enriching themselves and their donors while blaming either Republicans or progressives for all of our problems.
They actually need Republicans to remain empowered to continue the charade of their non-existent leadership. And, frankly, they also want the electoral support of white insurrectionists. Democrats probably think they can get at least a few of the vigilantes the next time around..

Hi @EdinburghUni @EHRC @EHRCChair @KishwerFalkner @RJHilsenrath @trussliz @GEOgovuk

The DIVERSITY INFORMATION section in yr job application mentions 'legal equality duties'. You then ask "What is your gender identity?" with options

Female
Male
Non-binary
Not-listed
Other

1/13

'Gender identity' is not a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010 and is not defined in the Act.

Sex is the protected characteristic and the only two possible options for sex are 'Female' and 'Male' as defined in the Act and consistent with biology - 'non-binary' and 'other' are not valid options.

https://t.co/CEJ0gkr6nF

'Gender identity' is not a synonym for sex.

3/13

You then ask "Does your gender identity match your sex registered at birth?"

4/13

Again, 'gender identity' is not a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010 and is not defined in the Act.

Following @BAUDEGS I have experienced hateful and propagandist tweets time after time. I have been shocked that an academic community would be so reckless with their publications. So I did some research.
The question is:
Is this an official account for Bahcesehir Uni (Bau)?

Bahcesehir Uni, BAU has an official website

I'm going to do two history threads on Ethiopia, one on its ancient history, one on its modern story (1800 to today). 🇪🇹

I'll begin with the ancient history ... and it goes way back. Because modern humans - and before that, the ancestors of humans - almost certainly originated in Ethiopia. 🇪🇹 (sub-thread):

The first likely historical reference to Ethiopia is ancient Egyptian records of trade expeditions to the "Land of Punt" in search of gold, ebony, ivory, incense, and wild animals, starting in c 2500 BC 🇪🇹

Ethiopians themselves believe that the Queen of Sheba, who visited Israel's King Solomon in the Bible (c 950 BC), came from Ethiopia (not Yemen, as others believe). Here she is meeting Solomon in a stain-glassed window in Addis Ababa's Holy Trinity Church. 🇪🇹

References to the Queen of Sheba are everywhere in Ethiopia. The national airline's frequent flier miles are even called "ShebaMiles". 🇪🇹
“We don’t negotiate salaries” is a negotiation tactic.

Always. No, your company is not an exception.

A tactic I don’t appreciate at all because of how unfairly it penalizes low-leverage, junior employees, and those loyal enough not to question it, but that’s negotiation for you after all. Weaponized information asymmetry.

Listen to Aditya

And by the way, you should never be worried that an offer would be withdrawn if you politely negotiate.

I have seen this happen *extremely* rarely, mostly to women, and anyway is a giant red flag. It suggests you probably didn’t want to work there.

You wish there was no negotiating so it would all be more fair? I feel you, but it’s not happening.

Instead, negotiate hard, use your privilege, and then go and share numbers with your underrepresented and underpaid colleagues. […]
