In Jajpur (Odisha) lived a great Bhakta of Jagannath Prabhu. His name was Bandhu Mohanti.
Bandhu was very poor but always reassured his wife that he had a great friend who would take care of them.

However, in the morning aarti, a gold tray was found missing in Puri Mandir. It was found with Bandhu and he was put in prison.
Same night, the King had a dream in which Jagannath Prabhu asked him to release Bandhu.

Prabhu asked the King to take care of Bandhu.
The King released him and gave him the service of Prabhu as a cook in the Mandir.
Even now, descendents of Bandhu Mohanty are the main cooks in the Mandir kitchen and daily offer food to Jagannath on a golden Tray.

पिता के पास रहकर उन्होंने वेदों व शास्त्रों का अधययन किया।पिता की आज्ञा अनुसार उन्होने मृदगुल मुनि की कन्या मरुद्वती से विवाह किया।उनका वैवाहिक जीवन शांतिपूर्ण ढंग से चल रहा था लेकिन बहुत समय तक उनके घर किसी संतान ने जन्म नहीं लिया था।इस कारण उन्होने अपनी पत्नी सहित कठोर तप किया।

तपस्या करके उन्होने भगवान शिव को प्रसन्न कर लिया तब शिवजी उनके सम्मुख प्रकट हुए और कहा,"हे मुनि! मांगो क्या वर मांगते हो।"
मुनि मृकण्डु ने कहा,"प्रभु! यदि आप सच मे हमारी तपस्या से प्रसन्न हैं तो हमें संतान के रूप में एक पुत्र प्रदान करें।"

महादेव ने तब मृकंडु ऋषि से कहा,"हे मुनि! तुम्हें दीर्घायु वाला गुणरहित पुत्र चाहिए या 16 वर्ष की आयु वाला गुणवान पुत्र चाहते हो?" तब मुनि बोले," भगवन मुझे ऐसा पुत्र चाहिए जो अत्यंत गुणवान और ज्ञानी हो, फिर चाहे वो अल्पायु ही क्यों न हो।"

भगवान शिव ने उन्हें पुत्र प्राप्ति का आशीर्वाद दिया और अंतर्ध्यान हो गए। समय आने पर ऋषि मृकंडु और मरुद्वती के घर एक बालक ने जन्म लिया जो आगे चलकर मार्कंडेय ऋषि के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुआ। महामुनि मृकंडु ने मार्कंडेय को हर प्रकार की शिक्षा दी। मार्कंडेय एक आज्ञाकारी पुत्र थे।
