PANCHMUKHI GANESH: SIGNIFICANCE

Panchamukhi or 5-faced Ganesha is a representation of all forces. He is also known as Heramba Ganpati, mostly in Nepal. It means protector of the weak.
The 5 heads signify 5 layers of Atman- the inner self.

Created by Maharshi Parasurama and also one among the 108 Shakthi Peethas in the world. The name Kanyakumari stands for Kanya(Virgin) and Kumari(girl).
Devi took this form to vanquish the demon Banasura

Once, Banasura(grand son of Mahabali) obtained a boon from Shiva that he could be vanquished only by a virgin.
So, Devi took the form of a kumari and started meditating with the desire to marry Shiva at Suchindram.
Pleased Shiva fixed the midnight hour for marriage with Devi.

Devarshi Narada knew that the marriage would end the chance of killing Banasura. So, he assumed the form of a cock and crowed. Shiva returned back to Suchindram thinking that it was dawn.
Angered, Devi cursed that all food and articles meant for wedding turn into sand and shells

When Banasura heard about Devi’s beauty, he tried to take her by force. Devi, then, killed him and granted the wish of Devas to remain there always protecting them.
The murti of Devi stands with a rosary in hand. Her diamond nose-ring is said to be visible even from the sea.

Once an ancient mariner mistook it for a lighthouse and sailing towards it, his ship wrecked upon the Kanya Kumari rocks. In order to prevent such a tragedy from happening again, the eastern door of the shrine is opened only on five special occasions throughout the year.

KANIPAKAM VINAYAKA, CHITOOR (AP)

Kani means wetland and Pakam means flow of water into wetland.
Kanipakam Vinayaka is swayambhu (self-manifested). The murti is in a well which is always full of water.

Once, there were three brothers. Each one had a handicap- Dumb, Deaf and Blind. They had a small piece of land for livelihood. For their field, they drew water from a well. One day, they found that the well had dried up so one of them started digging in the well.

His tool hit something and blood oozed out. They found a swayambhu murti of Ganesha here.
Villagers started offering coconut water which overflew into a channel. Hence the name Kanipakam.

The murti is still growing in size. At present, we see the knees and the abdomen only. The Kavacham (Armour) offered to Vinayaka 50 years ago doesn’t fit today.
Vinayaka is believed to be the upholder of truth. So people come here and swear before him to prove their innocence.

NARHARI AND BHAGWAN PANDURANG/VITTHAL

Once a goldsmith by the name of Narhari lived in Pandharpur. He excelled in his craft. He had vowed not to look at Pandurang or visit his mandir ever, as he was a Shiva Bhakt.
One day, a wealthy merchant visited him.

He wanted a gold girdle studded with precious gems, to be made for Prabhu Vitthal. Narhari refused to make it as it was for Vitthal.
After many requests, he agreed to make the girdle but asked the merchant to bring the measurement from the mandir as he himself would not go there

The measurement was given n he made the girdle. When the girdle was put on Vitthal, it was loose. Narhari had to shorten it. Now the girdle became tight. So Narhari was forced to take measurement on his own. He had to go to the mandir but went blindfolded to avoid seeing Vitthal

In the Mandir, when blindfolded Narhari touched Vitthal, he felt as if he was touching Shiva with matted hair, the moon, snake in His neck and Trishul in His hand. Ecstatic with joy, he removed the blindfold to see Shiva but he found the murti of Vitthal with Rukmini there.

He realised the truth that there was no difference between Vitthal and Shiva. Narhari at once fell at the feet of Panduranga. He then took the measurement of the waist of Vitthal and this time the ornament fit the Murti perfectly.

CHOTTANIKKARA BHAGAWATHY, KOCHI (Ker)

Ma, known as Rajarajeswari (Adiparashakti), is worshipped here in 3 forms-Saraswati in morning, Lakshmi at noon and Durga in evening.

There is a murti of Maha Vishnu on the same pedestal, together worshipped as Ammenarayana.

Legend says that Adi Shankaracharya Ji wanted to bring Ma Sharadamba to Kerala.
Ma followed him on the condition that he will not look back.
When he moved, he could hear only sound of anklets behind him. At a point, the sound stopped and he looked back. This place was Kollur.

Devi decided to stay there but on his request, she agreed to be present here as Saraswati in the morning.

Pavizhamalli thara is the moola sthana of Devi. She was moved to the current location by Villwamangalam Swamiyaar after the presence of Devi was discovered by locals.

There is an old mandir near the main one known as Kizhukkavu. People who feel haunted by evil spirits visit here.

The trees around the mandir are full of long nails.
When mental illness gets cured, people put a nail here.

Makom Thozhal is the most important festival.

SRI SIDDHI VINAYAK (VIGNESHWARA SWAMY), AINAVILLI (AP)

Ganapati is famous here for quickly granting wishes of Bhaktas.

Siddhi Vinayaka murti is placed in southwest corner and faces south.
It is believed that it brings wealth and prosperity if one installs Ganapati this way.

Kshetra Purana says that Daksha Prajapati performed puja of Vinayaka at this place before performing Daksha Yagna.

Another legend says that Vyasa Maharshi, during the beginning of his tour of South, had installed this Ganesha murti, reputed to fulfill the wishes of Bhaktas.

Main festivals celebrated here are Vinayaka Chaturthi, Kartika Masam and Prabha Festival.

The complex also has mandir for Kala Bhairava who is considered kshetrapalaka.

The mandir is famous for performing pooja for new automobile vehicles and students praying before exams.

Story of Thumba Poo and Shiva

Thumba poo is a tiny white flower which grows in all areas. These flowers are used for treatment for sinus. Small children who have polyps in Nose are told to crush tumbha leaves and apply in nose part.
There is an interesting story of Thumba and

Mahadeva. Thumba flowers were not taken for Shiva Pooja. Saddened to this Thumba prayed sincerely and Mahadeva appeared before her.
She was surprised that Shiva had appeared before her. Instead of saying that she wants to under his feet always, she said

She conducted the administrative work skillfully. As a Maharani she was an impartial judge. Rani Bhavani had a very hard time during the fag end of her life. The Zamindari (estate) incurred serious loss due to the change of the revenue policy of the company.

In spite of being the owner of a large Zamindari (estate), she had to depend on the stipend of the government in the later part of her life. The amount of this stipend gradually decreased and became Rs. 1000/- only in the end.
