‘Lilavati’ is a ‘Treatise’ of the great Indian Mathematician Bhaskaracharya which was written in 1150. It is the first volume of his main work, the “Siddhanta Shiromani”.

"If we live, we will live like free people"

This was Kittoor Chennamma's message to the British agent in South India.

The year was 1824.

As expected, the agent John Thackeray was not pleased, -

He marched to Kittoor with his army, surrounded the fort... and asked Rani Chennamma to surrender.

It is said that Rani Chennamma donned her warrior attire came out with her army. A fierce battle ensued and the British army was reportedly defeated... John Thackeray was killed.

This was a big blow to the Britishers.

Much before the revolt of 1857, there were several lone battles fought in the country and many brave women warriors led these battles and even defeated the British armies.

One such valiant freedom fighter was Rani Chennamma of Kittoor- a kingdom near present day Belgaum in Karnataka.

All was well in the thriving business destination of Kittoor. But misfortune fell upon the queen She lost her husband, king Mallasuraj,-

and after some time, her only son also died.

The British sensed an opportunity to capture her kingdom. It is said that Rani adopted another boy Shivalingappa and announced him as the next heir to the throne.

But the Britishers were not pleased.

Do We (Hindus) really have 33 Crore Gods and Goddesses?

The concept of 33 Koti devata in Hinduism!

’33 Crore Gods’ is a highly misinterpreted fact. The term ‘trayastrimsati koti’ mentioned in Atharva Veda, Yajur Veda, and Satapatha-brahmana, was misunderstood as 33 Crores.

The term ‘koti’ in Sanskrit has two meaning, one is ‘supreme’ and the other is Crore.

The term ‘trayastrimsati koti’ does not mean the number 'thirty-three crore'. Here koti means 'supreme', pre-eminent, excellent, that is, the 33 'supreme' divinities.

So, somewhere in translation, we missed the basic fact that Hinduism has 33 Supreme Gods and not 33 Crore Gods.

(The word koti has the same meaning as “Uchcha koti.”)

In the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, chapter 3, Yajñavalkya has said that in reality there are only 33 Gods and Goddesses.

Of these 8 are Vasus, 11 Rudras, 12 Adityas, and Indra and Prajapati.

( 8+ 11 + 12 + 2 = 33).

8 Vasus (deities of material elements) are -

Dyaus "Sky",
Prthivi "Earth",
Vāyu "Wind",
Agni "Fire",
Nakşatra "Stars",
Varuņa "Water",
Surya "Sun",
Chandra "Moon"

They are called Vasus, because they are the abode of all that lives, moves or exists.

क्यूँ मनाया जाता है रक्षाबंधन का पर्व और क्या हैं इस पर्व से जुड़ी, माँ लक्ष्मी और राजा बलि की पौराणिक कथा

कथा भगवान विष्णु के वामन अवतार से जुड़ी है. भगवान विष्णु ने वामन अवतार लेकर असुरों के राजा बलि से तीन पग भूमि का दान माँगा, दानवीर बलि इसके लिए सहज राजी हो गये

वामन ने पहले ही पग में धरती नाप ली,तो राजा बलि समझ कि गये कि ये वामन कोई और नहीं बल्कि स्वयं भगवान विष्णु ही हैं. बलि ने विनय पूर्वक भगवान विष्णु को प्रणाम किया और अगला पग रखने के लिए अपने शीश को प्रस्तुत किया. विष्णु भगवान बलि पर प्रसन्न हुए और वरदान माँगने को कहा

तब असुर राज बलि ने वरदान में भगवान विष्णु से आग्रह किया कि वह उनके द्वारपाल बने । भगवान विष्णु ने राजा बलि के इस आग्रह को स्वीकार कर लिया और वह राजा बलि के साथ पाताल लोक चले गए। भगवान विष्णु के कई दिनों तक दर्शन न होने कारण माता लक्ष्मी परेशान हो गई और वह नारद मुनि के पास गई।

नारद मुनि के पास पहुंचकर उन्होंने उनसे पूछा के भगवान विष्णु कहाँ है। जिसके बाद नारद मुनि ने माता लक्ष्मी को बताया कि वह पाताल लोक में हैं और वरदान हेतु राजा बलि के द्वारपाल बने हुए हुए हैं।

तब माता लक्ष्मी के आग्रह पे नारद मुनि ने भगवान विष्णु को वापस लाने का उपाय बताया ।

उन्होंने कहा कि आप श्रावण मास की पूर्णिमा को पाताल लोक में जाएं और राजा बलि की कलाई पर रक्षासूत्र बाँध दें। रक्षासूत्र बाँधने के बाद राजा बलि से उपहार स्वरूप भगवान विष्णु को वापस माँग लें।

तब माता लक्ष्मी ने नारद मुनि की सलाह वैसा ही किया और असुर राज बलि को राखी बाँधी

On the night of 25th June 1975, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared the Emergency,

on the orders of Indira Gandhi, with the signing of President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, the Emergency was imposed on the country and suspended the fundamental rights of all citizens, which shook the nation's democratic foundations.

This emergency ended on 21 March 1977.

In 19 months, lakhs were imprisoned and tortured unnecessarily.

Thousands of column inches have been dedicated to articulating the horrors of Emergency, and the lessons it holds for future generations.

Among those who stood tallest at the time, but paid the ultimate price for her principled dissent, was writer, activist, producer and actress Snehalatha Reddy (1932– 20 January 1977)

She was known for her works in Kannada cinema,Kannada theatre and Telugu cinema, Telugu theatre

Married to poet, mathematician and director Pattabhi Rama Reddy, the couple were devoted socialists, dedicated to the cause of renowned activist and freedom fighter Dr Rammanohar Lohia.

सुदर्शनं प्रवक्ष्यामि द्वीपं तु कुरुनन्दन। परिमण्डलो महाराज द्वीपोऽसौ चक्रसंस्थितः॥
यथा हि पुरुषः पश्येदादर्शे मुखमात्मनः। एवं सुदर्शनद्वीपो दृश्यते चन्द्रमण्डले॥ द्विरंशे पिप्पलस्तत्र द्विरंशे च शशो महान्।

—वेद व्यास, भीष्म पर्व, महाभारत

Meaning:-

हे कुरुनन्दन ! सुदर्शन नामक यह द्वीप चक्र की भाँति गोलाकार स्थित है, जैसे पुरुष दर्पण में अपना मुख देखता है, उसी प्रकार यह द्वीप चन्द्रमण्डल में दिखायी देता है। इसके दो अंशो मे पीपल और दो अंशो मे विशाल शश (खरगोश) दिखायी देता है।

Meaning: "Just like a man sees his face in the mirror, so does the Earth appears in the Universe. In the first part you see leaves of the Peepal Tree, and in the next part you see a Rabbit."

Based on this shloka, Saint Ramanujacharya sketched out the map, but the world laughed

Timur Lang, was the founder of Timurid Empire. He was born in April 1336 CE, somewhere in central asia.

During his reign, he conquered Persia, Egypt, Central Asia and emerged as the most powerful and heinous ruler. He was a religious fanatic like the rest of the Islamic invaders who tried to invade India.

Timur Lang decided to invade India in 1398 as he heard about India's splendid wealth and had a desire to conquer India which his ancestor Genghis Khan couldn't do.

After Firoz Shah's demise in1388, Delhi Sultanate was in a state of political turmoil.During this time, Timur sent his grandson Pir Mohammad to attack Indian front. He invaded Multan&was able to defeat Iqbal Khan's brother but when he met with resistance,he asked help from Timur.

Iqbal Khan secured his hold on Delhi under Muhammad Tughluq after Firoz Shah died.
Timur provided the required back-up to his grandson with 100000 men approx. Timur sacked and plundered all the cities coming in his way &later in October 1398 reunited with his grandson.

EVOLUTION OF CROWNS

The ancient Indian kings called a head crown as a Mukut and it would mostly constitute of a golden ornamental headgear like an oval cap with gems.

Sometimes it would also include a halo circle to show the divinity of the king

As it was considered that kings were appointment by the gods themselves. Example the kings of mewar considered themselves to be the ‘Diwan of eklingji')

But in most cases very few Mukut with halo effect have been found.

Samudragupta in the gupta era coin. You can see the helmet like headwear on him.

Till gupta era the solid golden head wear was used in most days of the monarch.

But since the onset of 8th century it reduced in usage and was now used only as a ceremonial headwear.

Whereas earlier the Maharaja had to wear the mukut whenever his court was in session.

Still mukut was being used prominently for ceremonial activities till recent times.

But as times past the style of headwear also changed.

The kings mostly wore turbans ordained with pearls and gems while rarely anyone wore a true Mukut after 16th century.
