Founded in the early 18th century, Janakpurdham is a city located in Dhanusha distt of Nepal. Located about 225Km south-east of Kathmandu, Janakpurdham is an important pilgrimage site for Hindus due to its connection with Mata Sita.

Janakpurdham is known for its famous Janki Temple which is dedicated to Goddess Sita.Mata Sita is believed to be found here at Janakpurdham while ploughing the fields in a vessel underground, for this reason she is also called Dharti Putri.
Janakpurdham is also a place where the historical event of 'Sita Swayamvar' happened. Prabhu Ram broke the mighty 'Shivadhanush' and married Mata Sita.
Mithila culture originated from Janakpur. In ancient times, Janakpur was the capital of Kingdom of Mithila which was ruled by a righteous King named Janak and hence the name Janakpurdham.
Janakpur is also called the city of ponds. It has more than 70 ponds which are considered sacred by the Hindus. Some of the ponds are Dhanush Sagar, Ganga Sagar, Angraj Kund, Ratna Sagar, Agni Kunda etc which add to the beauty and divinity of Janakpurdham.
Janakpurdham is most famous for its many Historical sites of great religious significance to Hindus.

JANAKI MANDIR is the first on list. One of the renowned Hindu Temples dedicated to Mata Sita was built by Queen Vrisha Bhanu of Tikamgarh in 1911.
Temple is a 3 storeyed structure made entirely of stone &marble.Temple architecture resembles mixed style of Mogul-Hindu Rajput architectural style of Nepal.There r about 60 rooms decorated with colored glass,engravings&Mithila paintings with beautiful lattice windows& turrets.
In 1657, a Golden statue of the Goddess Sita was found here.

RAM MANDIR is dedicated to Bhagwan Ram and was built by Amar Singh Thapa. It is a 10 min walk from Janaki Mandir. The right side of the temple has many stone idols of Bhagwan Shiv.
VIVAHA MANDAPAM is also known as Ram Sita Vivah Mandir, the place where Bhagwan Ram & Mata Sita got married. Pillars are engraved with the figurines of all the Deities who attended the Ram-Sita wedding.
Some of the other temples in the vicinity are Sankatmochan Hanuman Mandir,
Dulha Dulhi temple where the decorated idols of Ram and Sita are kept in a glass and Dhanush dham, where a huge rock in the shape of part of bow is believed to be the broken Shiv Dhanush. There is also a huge pond here called Dhanush Sagar.
Janakpurdham is a very important pilgrimage site of the Hindus. If visiting Nepal, visiting this place is a must. Every year in the months of Nov, Dec thousands of the devotees witness the festivities of Sita Ram Vivah.

This shloka describes the form of वेदमाता गायत्री.

• It says, "She has five faces which shine with the colours of a Pearl 'मुक्ता', Coral 'विद्रुम', Gold 'हेम्', Sapphire 'नील्', & a Diamond 'धवलम्'.

• These five faces are symbolic of the five primordial elements called पञ्चमहाभूत:' which makes up the entire existence.

• These are the elements of SPACE, FIRE, WIND, EARTH & WATER.

• All these five faces shine with three eyes 'त्रिक्षणै:'.
