Princess Bamba Sutherland, the eldest daughter of Maharaja Duleep Singh and grand-daughter of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, was born on Sep 29, 1869, in London.

Duleep Singh, the last Maharaja of Punjab was taken away to England by British after annexing Punjab.

Since he was still a child he was forcibly converted to Christianity and made to adopt British values in order to prevent him from ever thinking about regaining Punjab.

He was also kept away from his mother Maharani Jindan.
When he finally met his mother years later...

During his struggle he married and had six children, 3 sons & 3 daughters from the 1st marriage.

Bamba was the most colorful character among 6 and was a rebel...

This Day in Labor History: January 22, 1599. Spanish troops began their attack on Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico. This incredibly violent incident and aftermath created a regime of labor under Spanish rule that would have devastating impacts on Native peoples! Let's talk about it!

From the moment Europeans came to the Americas, they had a pretty clear and consistent view of the labor regime they desired: people of color working for nothing or next to nothing.

Too often, our stories of American history downplay this because New England, which has played a huge part of national culture creation, was something of an exception, although not nearly to the extent that it gets portrayed.

But from New York to Argentina, the vast majority of colonial enterprises revolved in some way around this principle. It didn’t really matter much who the colonizing power was–French, Spanish, English, Dutch, Portuguese.

Wealth depended on wresting labor out of people with extreme violence and that was much easier to do when the people were not your own.

The case #RoeVWade was decided January 22, 1973.

But, "Roe" aka Norma McCorvey never actually had an abortion.

Ever.

In 1973 Sarah Weddington, the young lawyer who argued the case, called Norma & said “We won!”

She replied: “No, you won. Why would I be excited? I had a baby.”

The fact that Roe was no longer pregnant was an issue before SCOTUS.

But, Sarah Weddington had already modified the case to a class action— so even if Roe wasn’t pregnant there was some woman somewhere in Texas pregnant who didn’t want to be.

Fantastic move on her part!

Sarah Weddington, who argued Roe v. Wade before the Supreme Court at age 26, brought her parents & husband to oral argument.

Just like any mom— Sarah's asked if she could bring a camera & tape recorder. She had to tell her mom they weren't allowed in the courtroom.

Years before Roe v. Wade, Sarah Weddington, who remains the youngest person ever to have argued a successful Supreme Court case— had an illegal abortion herself, in Mexico.

No one knew this at the time. She said, "I secretly resolved to find a way to fix things in the future."

At the time, so many single women were on flights to El Paso, TX to cross the border to terminate their pregnancies, they called them "abortion flights."

(5/8) Huxley supported the “cause” while Orwell worked almost to his dying day to expose it in his most famous work "1984". Orwell died in 1950, a year after "1984" was published. 😳

At midday on Jan 15, 1919, the #NorthEnd was full of workers and residents venturing outdoors to enjoy unseasonably warm weather. At about 1 p.m., they heard a low rumble. Many assumed it was a Boston Elevated train. But, within minutes, they realized something was very wrong.

A 50-foot tall tank full of industrial grade molasses had ruptured, sending a 2.3 million gallon wave of molasses rushing through the crowded #NorthEnd.

The hulking molasses tank had been built by Purity Distilling Company only a few years earlier, in 1915. The tank measured 50-feet tall, and rose over the Boston Elevated Railroad tracks that ran next next to it

Tankers delivered shipments of molasses to Copps Hill Wharf, where it was pumped into the tank and stored until it could be sent to distilleries on train cars, like this one.

1. Gurdwara Nagina Ghat ⠀
A rich merchant’s expensive nagina (precious stone set in gold) was thrown by Guru Gobind Singh Ji into Godavri River. The merchant thought Guru Ji did not know the value of the nagina. Mahraj read his thought and

asked him to take out the nagina if it was so valuable. It is said that when he entered the river he was surprised to see the river bed full of precious stones. Purged of his false pride, he fell at Guru Ji’s feet. It was also from this place that Mahraj shot an arrow revealing

their Tap Asthan (meditation place) of Satyug, Sachkand Shri Hazor Sahib.⠀

2. Takht Sri Sachkand Abchalnagar Hazor Sahib. One of the 5 Takhts of Sikhs. Despite being the site where Kalgidhar Patshah Ji left their physical body from, their presence is felt strongly here.

3. Bunga Mai Bhago Ji
In compound of Takht Sri Hazor Sahib Ji, this Bunga is built in memory of Mai Bhago Ji. Housing weapons believed to be of Mai Bhago Ji and 40 Mukte. The two Angitha Sahib of Pyare Bhai Daya Singh ji and Pyare Bhai Dharam Singh Ji are also situated here.

4. Gurdwara Hira Ghat⠀

I wanted to tell a little story about one of the most fascinating Parisian muses of the 19th century:

Jeanne Duval.

She was known in her time as "the Black Venus."

Very little is known about Duval for certain, but she inspired some of the most famous—and scandalous—poems of the era, written by her lover, the bad boy poet Charles Baudelaire. (If you put sunglasses on his statue in the Luxembourg gardens, he looks a bit like Bono).

Now, I should say, am not an expert on Jeanne Duval. There is an amazing book that you really, truly must read called "Vénus Noire: Black Women and Colonial Fantasies in Nineteenth-century France" by @ParisNoire. Go buy it. It came out last year. It's 💯

Baudelaire's poems about Jeanne were pretty racy for the time. In "Les Fleurs du Mal," his physical and emotional obsession with her is on full display. The fact that she was Black, a Creole woman from Haiti (he says), made them even more scandalous to White Parisian society.

The reaction to Baudelaire's poems about sex and death were so extreme that he was even prosecuted for creating "an offense against public morals." He was fined, but not imprisoned.

Here's one of his poems about Jeanne, original title "Sed non satiata" ("but not satisfied").

Thread: In communism poetry is a capital crime.

This poem was used as evidence by the communist prosecutors in the 1958 treason trial of Romanian poet and journalist Radu Gyr. Gyr was aligned in his youth with the nationalist movement Legion Of Archangels Michael & Gabriel.

Radu Gyr's first stint in prison lasted 1 year and happened during the pro-fascist regime of Gen. Ioan Antonescu, who aligned Romania with Nazi Germany. After one year behind bars he was freed on parole and sent to fight on the Eastern front in WWII.

Sending political dissidents on the front lines to be killed was one of the methods used by the fascist Antonescu regime government to punish former members of the Legion. Radu Gyr returned home a disabled veteran after he was wounded in battle.

In 1958 the communist authorities were in full swing with their plans to collectivize Romanian agriculture. The government was confiscating all farming land from the farmers and landowners and pushing everybody into CAPs -collective agricultural production farms.

Not just because systemic problems involve collective action (you can't recycle your way out of climate change), but because the cause-and-effect relationships of systemic problems can't be easily known, so it's hard to know what you need to do to avert the problem.

In "Cézanne's Doubt",Merleau-Ponty discusses how Cézanne gave up classic artistic elements such as pictorial arrangements, single view perspectives, and outlines that enclosed color in an attempt to get a "lived perspective" by capturing all the complexities that an eye observes.
