We\u2019re beginning to see what will likely be a Herculean effort by MAGA media and certain pols to change the subject from their grotesque assault on democracy, one that resulted in bloodshed and the death of a police officer. Be aware of what they\u2019re doing as they try.

"Those who talk to Mr. Woodward, in other words, can be confident that he will be civil (“I too was growing tired, and it seemed time to stand up and thank him”), that he will not feel impelled to make connections between..." 1/
"what he is told and what is already known that he will treat even the most patently self-serving account as if untainted by hindsight..." 2/
"In this business of running the story, in fact in the business of news itself, certain conventions are seen as beyond debate. “Opinion” will be so labeled, and confined to the op-ed page or the Sunday-morning shows." 3/
"'News analysis' will be so labeled, and will appear in a subordinate position to the 'news' story it accompanies. In the rest of the paper as on the evening news, the story will be reported “'impartially,' the story will be 'even-handed,' the story will be 'fair.'” 4/
When I look around me, I feel mostly contempt. I'm supposed to say contempt is a bad emotion, that it eats you alive inside, that it's noble to set these things aside and focus on the positive–but I'm not here to say what I'm supposed to
Conviction is easy when you have someone to hate. Hatred is the glue that holds societies together at scale. It's hard to agree what is good, easy to agree who to hate. It's not wrong to define yourself by what you oppose, but it does cause a problem if that thing stops existing

Trump is gone and we are all still processing that. I haven't had much to say on this topic because I prefer to watch things unfold than pretend to understand a complex social situation where I have no inside information.
We feel angry and betrayed after this loss, but it's not that we lost Trump the man, it's that we lost Trump the symbol. He represented a rising American nationalist consciousness, that's what we don't want to let go
Any lingering hope I had for America is gone. This is not my country any more. Maybe it hasn't been for a while, but that last trace of belonging is gone. There are still people here who are my people, but this is not our country
Grief is odd, I'm stuck. I don't know what to do, but I need to share what an incredible human Niles was, thus a 🧵.
I met Niles in 2001 as we began our MS degrees @IdahoStateU. He had dreadlocks, an awesome beard (before they were hip); we all know a person like this, a total Character, like someone crafted in a clever novel. A little kooky, smart, antagonizing, loyal, opinionated, lovable.
He was into fungi, soil dynamics, and so many things I knew little about. But I loved our energetic and animated scientific discussions. He was brilliant and fun. @vargaslab has put together a lovely tribute to Niles' scientific interests and
@NjHassel sadly passed away on January 8th. He was an exceptional human being, father, husband, friend and scientist.

In a place like Pocatello, ID, we had to make our own fun, and the Biology dept. was a tight knit community. I can't say Niles and I were best friends, but we were friends. When he and @emhasselquist started dating little did we know the makings of a future dream team had begun.
Fast forward a couple years, I had finished my MS and was working in Michigan looking for a PhD program. I made my way to @UCRiverside, where Niles had already started his PhD. He and Eliza invited me to be a roommate and Team Goodrich was born (Goodrich = street we lived on).
The stuff this adaptation considers extraneous is baffling.
The acting is great. Cinematography, effects, direction, top notch.
But the script is just killing me.
9/10 of Nick's story so far was cut. Not exaggerating.
No jail, no sherriff, no sheriff's wife, no inmates. Pfft.

... no Sue, no Lucy. Most of the Ad Hoc committee is missing.
The role of Ray (Ralph) has been scaled back a ton.
What is going on here?
My gut tells me we're not going to see Dayna or the Judge, either. :/
I have asked you for citations to support your assertions and to explain the relevance of some of your assertions, both of which you have demonstrated incapable of doing.
Maybe you are just incapable?
...and @heatherpeno blocks conceding and demonstrating that she cannot support her assertions or explain the relevance of some of her assertions to the original conversation (https://t.co/BzO0Xu2kGG). Her loss.
Paternal legal surrender is not yet a thing in any jurisdiction I am aware of but the female equivalents are legal (though not all of them are legal everywhere): abortion, baby Moses laws, unilateral adoption, etc.

Do you have a citation to the contrary?

The Senate should vote to dismiss the article of impeachment once it is received in the Senate. We will be delaying indefinitely, if not forever, the healing of this great Nation if we do otherwise. pic.twitter.com/fjVcf7iVPf
1) "But now, in your first act as Majority Leader, rather than begin the national healing that the country so desperately yearns for, you seek vengeance and political retaliation instead."
Trump incited an attack on the Capitol, on Congress, and on a free & fair election.
Trump has yet to concede, to apologize, or to admit he was lying about the outcome of the election. He has done nothing that demonstrates he does not continue to present a danger to our nation.
Trump's supporters continue to conspire to overthrow the government--with Trump's implicit, and quite possibly explicit--support. At this very moment, over 20,000 troops are stationed in our nation's capital to ensure the inauguration of President-Elect Biden can be completed.
It is not "vengeance" or "political retaliation" to insist a man that has fomented and continues to inspire a violent insurrection against the government is unfit ever to hold office again.
This is, in fact, a bare minimum protection for our country against future harm by Trump.
