Well, we’re between coup attempts and attempts to throw out a seditionist president, so I’m going to take the opportunity to describe this research that was recently accepted in @SERestoration for the grassland ecology SF.

Led by @Blackburn_RC and in collaboration with @barberecology and others not on the Twitters, this work was from Ryan’s MSc research @NIULive. I say research and not thesis, dear reader, bc it didn’t make it into his thesis.

Truth be told, this was an epic battle of computer vs researcher and many times, it felt like computer won. I encourage students in my lab pick a risky part and less risky part of their research. Drone imagery was Ryan’s risky part.

As sometimes happens w the risky part, this one didn't go in the thesis, but Ryan persevered to get it published nonetheless.

More times than not, in fact, it felt like the drone work went like this:
It turns out to be bad idea for people who have large public microphones to act as if they're venting to their 120 Facebook friends.

And oh, look, this is a perfect segue to a tweetstorm about my latest column!

So I've been saying Trump is dangerous basically since the beginning. Not because I thought he was going to cancel elections and become a dictator; I didn't think he had the competence, or American institutions the vulnerability, for that.

I thought he was dangerous because he said stuff no politician could say, and that was corrosive to American democracy in all sorts of ways. What happened on Wednesday doesn't need to itself be a coup in order to pose a mortal long-term danger to the Republic.

Also I didn't want the impulsive, belligerent narcissist to have access to nuclear launch codes, but that's a discussion for another time.
How did it come to this? A deeply misguided effort (@joyhataley) to silence @randyhillier, a MPP in the provincial legislature. This reflects poorly on the medical community. How could one do it differently in a thoughtful, educated manner. Lets consider. 1/

First, Mr. Hillier and I don't share political perspective but we do share a respect for facts. Facts are the foundation of debate and for the development of sound policy. Ontario has no mechanism to robustly debate C19 facts as the legislature is basically shuttered. 2/

So Mr. Hillier has consequently decided to organize rallies and engage in civil disobedience. All rather normal behavior. He has an audience because leaders in the medical/political community haven't convinced the public that draconian actions are necessary. 3/

It may surprise many but the last time such draconian actions were taken were the middle ages. The plague killed half of europe. Lockdowns likely facilitated death, as after people panicked and killed their cats/dogs, rats florished and congregated indoors. 4/

Mr. Hillier tweets acknowledge the unprecedented draconian actions and expand upon concerns centered on civil liberties and the destruction of institutions that maintain the health and well being of Ontarians. Seems rather straightforward. 5/
