In Pandharpur, the spiritual capital of Maharashtra, Sri Hari is worshipped as Vitthala and fondly called Vithobha/ Panduranga.
This is the only place where one can touch Narayan’s feet or keep one's forhead upon His feet.

Once, Radha Rani visited Dwarika. Seeing Krishna’s love for Radha, Devi Rukmini became upset and departed for the forest of Dindirvana, near Pandharpur.
Krishna followed Rukmini to apologize but Rukmini was unmoved. So Krishna went on to Pandharpur to visit Bhakta Pundarika.

When he reached Pundarika’s ashrama, Pundarika was serving his elderly parents. So Pundarika gave him a seat of brick and asked him to wait. Krishna did as told. He stood, lotus hands on His hips, waiting for Pundarika to return.
While he was waiting, Rukmini, rejoined Him.

Both decided to stay there and to this day, Krishna stands on the same brick, as Vitthala.
The ceiling of the mandir has the famous eight prayers known as Pandurangashtakam, composed by Adi Shankaracharya Ji during his visit to Pandharpur.

Pundalik, son of Janudev n Satyavati, lived in Dandirvan. As Pundalik ill-treated his parents, they decided to leave for Kashi. Pundalik and his wife also went with them. While the old couple had to walk bare-foot, Pundalik rode on horse@onlyonenetra pic.twitter.com/aHgRF01HhK
Sri Varadaraja Swamy is the presiding deity in this kshetram which is on a hillock called Hastigiri.
Once, Brahma performed a yagna in which he failed to invite Devi Saraswati. Thus angered, Devi took the form of a river (Vegavathi).

Sri Narayana lied down across the flooded river to save the yagna. When the yagna was completed, Sri Varadaraja appeared from the yagna agni with his consorts, Sridevi and Bhoodevi.
As Prabhu emerged from fire, he acquired pinkish spots on his face.

Near the sanctum, there is a carving of 2 lizards- in gold and silver.
It is said that once Rishi Gautam cursed 2 of his disciples as the water brought by them for pooja had two lizards in it which were not noticed by them. They were cursed to become lizards.

They attained moksha after praying to Varadaraja. It is said that the taint of lizard falling on our bodies is removed by mere touching of the carvings.
The tank here is special. Under it is hidden the Aththi Varadar, wooden replica of Prabhu that is brought out every 40 years.

VARADARAJASWAMY PERUMAL MANDIR
The 12-foot high murti of Athi Varadar (made out of fig tree), lies in a silver casket under water in the Mandir tank.
In the 16th century, the murti was immersed in the Mandir tank to protect it from being\xa0plundered by invaders. pic.twitter.com/B06utz77th
Observed in the Tamil month of Margazhi (this year on Dec 20). It celebrates the cosmic dance of Shiva, which is represented by Nataraja form.
Arudra signifies the golden red flame and it is also a Nakshatra represented by Shiva.

The most important Arudra Darshan festival takes place at Chidambaram (TN).
Legend has it that Shiva performed the cosmic dance for Adi Shesha and Vyaghrapada.
Adishesha is the 7-hooded serpent on whom Sri Vishnu rests and Vyaghrapada performed tapas to witness Ananda Tandava.

Plz read my earlier thread to know the story of Vyaghrapada.
VYAGHRAPADA AND NATARAJA

Vyaghrapada was a Shiva bhakt in Chidambaram region. Everyday he offered fresh flowers on Shivlinga.
One day, he observed that honeybees used to drink nectar from flowers before he offered them to Prabhu. So he started going to forest before sunrise. pic.twitter.com/fdkAshsc2G
