THREAD:

1/ Why UBI is #Kuwait’s best hope to survive the next 20 years.

 2/ Kuwait's economy is dominated by the state which in turn generates almost all its revenues from oil. Furthermore, private sector activity today is in effect completely dependent the public sector.
3/ I posit that excessive public sector employment is the root cause of many, if not the majority of Kuwait's problems that, left unchecked, will ensure standards of living only decline from here on.
4/ The obstacle to change is Kuwait's 1961 constitution obliging the state to provide every citizen with employment. Kuwait’s high population growth has brought it to a tipping point where:
5/

— Public payroll increasingly crowds-out all other types of state spending, meaning state dominated/controlled sectors are starved of capital and the private sector isn't allowed to fill the gap.
6/

— Citizens are diverted from productive work and building globally competitive/sustainable enterprises, by generous and consistent state salaries and handouts.
7/

— The outsized role of the state in the economy and its increasing layers of bureaucracy have created conditions where corruption thrives.
8/ Kuwait has neither the social nor political will to freeze or cut public sector wages, and it cannot stop employing citizens due to its constitutional obligation.
9/ An elegant solution to its increasingly unsustainable socio-economic model, is to begin offering a new kind of “employment” resembling what many call Universal Basic Income (UBI).
10/ Kuwait’s UBI should be:

— Instated as a "salary" for a "job" to comply with the constitution.
— Uniform, every adult gets the same.
— Variable, a % of oil revenues is allocated.
11/ To incentivise adoption, the UBI salary can be set higher than existing state salaries. This draws citizens away from traditional unproductive and administrative jobs.
12/ As more switch to the UBI scheme, the lower the state salary per capita becomes. This creates an incentive for citizens to supplement their incomes through private employment or entrepreneurship.
13/ A smaller public sector means less scope for corruption as ministry budgets shrink. A consequence is a less toxic political climate, reducing the time spent debating corruption and wealth distribution.
14/ It also sends an important signal to citzens for the first time: that oil prices and hence state revenues, are volatile. This will incentivise a higher personal savings rate, leading to opportunities for capital formation and domestic investment.
15/ The public sector portfolio should be concentrated in areas where a state monopoly make most sense, i.e defense, police and the judiciary.
16/16 I'm generally not a proponent of #UBI, but in Kuwait's case the existing system has proven so inept at exercising restraint and encouraging productivity, that it's the only feasible solution left other than opening Pandora's box and amending the constitution.

/thread/ It has been almost 2 months since the end of the 2020 Nagorno Karabakh war and after observing it from the start and talking about it with (or listening to) some really smart people, here are IMO important lessons (new or old) from that conflict:

1. Even in smaller conflicts, U(C)AVs are making achieving air superiority, or at least denying it to the opponent, a lot more important than it used to be.

2. Effective distribution of real-time data from U(C)AVs (and loitering munitions, which can be launched to perform recon when other assets are not available) can significantly increase the effectiveness of even relatively old artillery systems.

3. While airpower is getting incredibly deadly and can quickly inflict massive material damage, you still need units on the ground with a strong will to fight despite taking casualties (and political will to accept that in serious modern wars, significant losses are inevitable).

4. Soldiers need to be aware that on a modern battlefield there are not really any "safe areas" and TTPs (tactics techniques procedures) need to be changed to reflect this.

She is trying to disguise by leaving so that she can come back to her tissue-paper ladled supporters for a pass. They see their undoing-that they are responsible for the deaths of 4 soldiers and about 27 Police Officers and about 50 civilians all over Nigeria who all died because

of their #LekkiLies. All of them have blood on their hands and eternal pain on their consciences. Until they purge themselves of these by apologising to Nigerians, the evil they did will haunt them forever. At 23, someone has become so notorious for evil. Same with the sWitch/

who was asked to bring her evidence to the Panel and did not show up. A frail looking thing who was able to carry dead weights of dead bodies and dropping them at the feet of soldiers who were shooting at her. Perhaps she was under the influence of drugs and was hallucinating/

An explanation of what is going on with the Salmond enquiry.

Alex Salmond was the leader of the SNP and was first minister of Scotland, but he stepped down from this position after the SNP failed to secure the Scottish Referendum.

Nicola Sturgeon took his place.

Nicola was basically Salmonds underling and he was her mentor. They were very close.

Everything after this point is all speculation/allegations, so take everything with a pinch of salt until the facts come out.

If the SNP ever allow them to come out.

A rift had been growing for many years between Salmond and Sturgeon as he felt she was not progressing enough towards an independent Scotland, probably because the party focuses mainly on woke bullshit and hate crime laws for memes.

Salmond hinted a return to the party.

Around about this time, with very convenient timing, Salmond got MeToo'd by several women within the SNP, this resulted in a massive police investigation, seriously huge, with the cops interviewing around 400 people.

Salmond was charged with several counts of sexual assault.

The case goes to trial, which results in Salmond being aquitted of all charges.

This is usually where such things would end, but it turns out this exposed everyone to a rabbit hole of alleged corruption within the SNP at it's highest levels.

To save people having to read the whole thing here are a few key points. HES conclusion: "the proposed development would give rise to "adverse effects on the OUV of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh World Heritage Site (WHS) & the setting of the Category A listed Royal Crescent"

Regarding the application brought forward HES "recommended changes to the design of the development which we consider would reduce and avoid the impacts described" (on the OUV of the WHS). These included reduced height.

However, even the 1st pre-application advice issued to the developer & Council said "On the northern part of the site.. six-storey blocks would constrain... views to the Crescent from the north… Reducing the height of the.. blocks…would… protect the WHS topography & townscape"

Then on another occasion "our clear preference would be for the consideration of alternative options for the footprint and massing of development in this area" Referring to the southernmost blocks nearest to Royal Cres

There's been a lot of talk about the missionary killed by the natives of North Sentinel Island. They're probably so aggressive because of this weirdo, Maurice Vidal Portman. So here's a big thread about this creep and some facts from my decade-long obsession with the island.


The Sentinelese are often described as “uncontacted,” but this not strictly true. They had a very significant contact in 1880 with Commander Portman.

I get asked for writing tips a lot. Of all the ones I’ve given, here are a few of the ones that seem to hold true and remain somewhat universal or at least mostly unobjectionable:

1. If you are a fast writer (i.e., if you compose first drafts very quickly) then you absolutely must become a slow editor. Much of what I call “writing” is really, for me, editing.

2. If you don’t read you cannot write a lot or well. Sure, maybe you can read like a maniac for a decade and then read less after that, but without some large volume of intake, there will never be a meaningful output.

2.1 I sometimes say that I feel like writing without reading is like trying to run a marathan on a cracker. And sadly I see many students struggling to write when they have simply never read enough to fuel that demand of the task at hand.

3. All writing is writing if one decides to treat it that way. If one takes some degree of intentional will when sending emails, posting on social media and writing notes and marginalia, then all of that can count as meaningful daily writing.

Originally built by Chalukyas in 7th century. Devi Banashankari was their family deity. This image of Banashankari Amma was installed by Jagadekamalla I in 630 AD.

Later renovations were done by Marathas.


Once, a demon Durgamasur was troubling the people of this area. Answering the prayers of Devas, Ma Parvati emerged from the yajna fire as Banashankari and killed Durgamasur.
This area has rich forests of coconut, betel nut and other trees.

It is said that during a severe famine, Devi provided vegetables and fruits to the people of this area.
Hence, she is also worshipped here as Shakambhari.
In the annual festival called Banashankari jatre, a Rath yatra takes place and Devi moves around the city in the chariot.

The shrine is believed to have been constructed by Prahlada. With time, it crumbled.
In Treta yuga, King Pururava was passing from here in his vimana. The vimana was attracted to this place by a mystic power.
When the place was unearthed, the deity was found.

Pururava’s wife, Urvashi, had a dream that the deity should remain covered in sandalwood paste for the whole year except on Akshaya Tritiya.
This practice has continued till date.
The mukhya mandap here, has a pillar kappam stambham believed to possess curative powers.


Chandanotsava/ Chandan Yatra is the most important festival celebrated on Akshaya Tritiya. The sandalwood paste is removed from the moolavar deity and nijarupa darshan (original form of deity) for twelve hours of the day are done by devotees.
