THREAD: MSP & the wokeness happening around it.

Let's start by addressing the wokes who are "standing up" for the "poor farmers".

These budhijeevis have no idea most of these "poor farmers" spend more on their cars' alloy wheels or on their John Deere's music system than +

 what these liberals spend on their education at state varsities.

Even in the recent contro with Kangana, the old lady's husband (I suppose) is heard saying "we don't need money for protesting. We own 12-13 kille zameen"..

This land is worth more than +
what these wokes will ever see in their lifetime - forget earning it.

Even though these bills have nothing to do with scrapping MSP, these people are creating a ruckus for no reason at all. This pushes me to expose their hypocrisy.

Although I'm not someone who eyes someone's wealth or talks about it, these people need to know we know about it. +
Farmer suicides - while this is a grave issue, several studies have shown that the prime cause of farmer suicide is not debt but family issues or illness.

Also, the greedy moneylenders" that the media usually reports as the cause of suicides are not banks but middlemen - adatis+

There has been some chatter about making MSP a legal right. This SHOULDN'T happen at ANY cost.
MSP is d SUPPORT price which the govt promises to pay in case the produce of a farmer is not bought in the open market +
But the farmers esp. in Punjab & Haryana have turned this into a pump & dump scheme.

The shellers/millers take this a step further by supplying moisture heavy crops to the govt. Without going into details, this is a way of supplying less & earning more. +
India also happens to pay hefty MSPs. You might think MSP calculation is a complex process. Not really, the Indian govt. pays 1.5 times the production cost to the farmers as MSP.

Means, if a crop cost you Rs.100 rupees to plant, the govt will pay Rs.150 - no questions asked. +
How cool is that? Even the US-of fucking-A has objected to India's bonker MSP.

According to WTO rules, MSP should be up to 10% while India is paying a whopping 60-70%. Financed by the tax paying citizen. +
Which brings me to the question - to what do the ordinary tax-paying citizens (like me) owe the pleasure of paying 30% of our hard-earned money to the state while people with so much land don't pay ANY type of tax - Income or property. +
Since the talks with the central govt are on, here are the changes that should be brought in these bills-
1. Fix the area of land a kisan can own above which he has to pay ALL types of taxes.
2. Farmers over a certain income threshold should pay ALL taxes. +
3. MSP and all benefits to only be reserved for EWS of farmers.

All this while I know nothing of this sort will happen because these political parties won't want to compromise their votes or face civil unrest. +
Also, it is time we stop this Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan non-sense.

A soldier voluntarily stands in harm's way & is willing to take a bullet so that I don't have to.
Tell me how this is the same as a person who grows a crop which he can dump at the govt's godown for a fatter profit +
NO FARMER grows a crop because he cares about what is on your plate. They are businessmen who're always looking to maximize profits.

If you doubt this, come to Haryana & you'll see how farmers are adamant about growing paddy even when Haryana faces an acute water shortage. +
If your argument is that farmers can't survive without MSP. Ask them to please STOP farming. Do yourself a favor by not doing us a favor.

Let the rules of economics come into play. Let the supply and demand determine prices. +
All those budhijeevis who are advocating that my state should buy expensive bajra from Rajasthani farmers are the same people who won't buy a Rs.150 shampoo from Amazon because they can get it for Rs.145 from Flipkart. +
(Haryana is paying 2150/quintal for Bajra compared to 1300 in RJ).

MSP props up the prices of the produce which makes it harder on the EWS. In short, economics comes into play after the produce is shelved for sale. Usse pehle kuch bhi chalta hai.

Nearly a year ago, the Tablighi Jamaat controversy took over India’s media. Around 3,500 foreign nationals had visited India to attend the Tablighi Jamaat event at the Nizamuddin Markaz Mosque in Delhi.

With the lockdown being announced on March 24, 2020, several attendees had moved to different parts of the country to attend smaller gatherings in local mosques.

Around 960 foreign nationals were held at quarantine and in states like UP, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Karnataka, etc. were sent straight to prison.

There was an outpour of Anti-Muslim bigotry in much of Indian news media with this event where it ramped up its demonisation of the community.

For weeks, the attendees of the Tablighi Jamaat event were named the “super-spreaders” of COVID and in several cases, Maulana Mohammad Saad was called a terrorist and “the maulana of death”.

Our pretensions to civilization have become very thin. Political violence was legitimized last year and is spreading wildly now. "Might makes right" is clearly the only "principle" behind freedom of speech. That's why Chinese Communists will never be censored by Big Tech.

When every "principle" becomes nothing but a ruthless exercise of power, it's not surprising that a growing number of people conclude they must demonstrate some sort of power in order to be taken seriously. Violence is the crudest exercise of power.

A well-run civilization makes it clear *universally* that violence is absolutely unacceptable. Giving free passes for irresponsible rhetoric and destruction to groups favored by the dominant political ideology of the State undermines that message.

We must also people peaceable means of expressing themselves and controlling their own lives, to relieve the pressures that can lead to violent outbursts and other forms of lawlessness. The less healthy discourse and freedom of action you have, the more pressure builds up.

It's dangerous when large numbers of people begin drawing the conclusion that might makes right, that laws and principles bend easily for those who have the political strength to bend them. Might makes right is the code of anarchy and barbarism, the antithesis of civilization.

Remember: Just because an idea is old doesn't mean it's good.

Knowing whether old ideas are more likely to be good requires understanding whether conditions have changed in important ways.

Horse archery was an amazing method of warfare for over a thousand years...then people invented guns, and suddenly this great idea that had stood the test of time became obsolete.

Then again, when underlying conditions don't change much, tried-and-true approaches are probably better.

"Learning the lessons of history" usually just means assuming ergodicity and stationarity in an informal time-series model...

2/ “Being a VC” can mean a lot of different things, so it’s worth asking:

What actual activities do you want to do?

- Deep market analysis?
- Be in the flow of information and people?
- Make deals?
- Work closely w/ founders over time (e.g take board seats?)
- Manage capital?

3/ It’s worth specifying what type of VC you might like to become — as there are different archetypes. E.g.

- Benchmark (Lead series A/B - couple investments a year)
- First Round (Lead seed rounds, partner w/ a few companies a year)
- SV Angel (Make lots of seed investments)

YC / Village Global - Build a platform to help entrepreneurs at scale

Do you want to join a firm or start one? There’s a lot to consider.

Different paths will require different skillsets & sets of experiences.

Adi Sankaracharya visited this shrine and worshipped the Devi. He installed SRICHAKRAM at the feet of Sri Kanaka Durga.

Adjacent to the Kanakadurga shrine is the shrine of the divine consort-Sri Malleswara Swamy on the Indrakeeladri.

So there's a class of puzzles called "river crossing puzzles" which involve having to cross a river on a boat/bridge containing some set of individuals/items with restrictions on which ones can be on the boat/left on each shore, right?

and the most common subclass of these problems is the one where you have 3 items/animals to cross with.
This is alternatively called the "fox, goose, and bag of beans" or "wolf, goat, and cabbage" puzzle.

the idea is that your boat can only carry one item at a time, but if you leave the wolf/fox unattended with the goat/goose, the wolf/fox will eat the goat/goose.
and similarly, the goose/goat will eat the beans/cabbage if left alone

so you have to set up a set of actions that never leaves either side of the river in one of the lose-states.

the solution to this variant being:
1. take the goat/goose over
2. return empty
3. take the wolf/fox over
4. return with the goat/goose
5. take the cabbage/beans over
6. return empty
7. take the goat/goose over

This was a deck that I created on my (longish) interview process with @a16z. It was a long path, starting with meeting folks at the firm 10 years ago. But the purpose of the deck was to explain how I would use my superpower in an investing context

Here's what I explain in the deck. As investors (whether angel or VC) we're often confronted with an up-and-to-the-right graph. Is it going to go up? Or down?


One solution to forecast these growth curves is the Growth Accounting Framework, where you add up New+Reactivated and subtract churned users. In each time period that gives you the difference in monthly actives.


The problem with this is that it's a lagging metric, not a leading one. We need to go one level deeper and look at the underlying loops that drive these numbers, to understand the quality.

This is Chris Gratien posting. I created this series during Fall 2020 for my students as asynchronous material supported by readings and discussion. This is going to be a long thread, but it will be a great shortcut for those looking to make similar use of these materials.

There are two items worth pointing out: 1. This is an overview of the political, social, and cultural history of Islamicate societies. It does not deal with the origins of Islam or many theological questions. It does discuss Islam’s spread and the transformation of Islamic law.

2. This is the first part of a two-part sequence that takes the history of the Islamic world into the present. It emphasizes developments and themes that have particular relevance for later periods.

This is really a multivocal narrative of Islamic history. We feature over 20 scholars from almost as many institutions. Many of those who worked on it, myself included, study the early modern and modern era but have teaching obligations that take us further back in history.
