The GOOD: CDC supports improving ventilation in schools

The BAD: it's buried in their new guidance

The SOLUTION: let's unbury it and make sure every school knows about

 Item #1 in the report (yes, #1), lists 5 key "Mitigation strategies to reduce transmission in schools"

It doesn't say 'ventilation', but it does say 'cleaning and healthy facilities'. I use 'healthy buildings' for header when talking ventilation, so this looks promising...

There is yet another link, but this one I have no issues with.

The topic of ventilation gets simplified (I try to keep it simple too so as not to lose people). But, like all things, the details get technical. CDC does right thing here and links to org that focuses on this

They link to ASHRAE - the group that focuses on ventilation. They go much deeper.

(if you work in schools, this is the doc that you'd hand-off to your facilities team - they'll 'get' this language and what's in it)

Alright, back to the new CDC guidance document again.

Later in the doc, they do actually mention 'ventilation' by name, this time in the expanded "cleaning and healthy facilities" section.

Yes, ventilation/filtration needed to be more prominent with more details on the schools page. But, to be fair, they use links for all other topics, too.

Look at the 'water' recommendation - super thin, like ventilation - and addressed through linking to more info

CDC should have done what we did - make an entire section of schools guidance focused specifically on ventilation.

I think our section on "Healthy Buildings" is still the best guidance out there on this topic (if it wasn't, I'd pull it down)

There's an important topic I wish CDC addressed (and, frankly, where ASHRAE and others have come up very short, too).

Saying 'more ventilation', as these groups do, is not actionable unless you give a target

--> We recommend 4-6 air changes per hour for classrooms

These 4-6 air changers per hour can be achieved through any combination of ventilation+filtration. We recommend this prioritization:

1: increased outdoor air
2: better filters on recirc air (MERV13)
3: portable air cleaners w/ HEPA

I also had hoped CDC would go deeper into the recommending portable air cleaners. On the good 'ventilation for buildings' page, the do mention air cleaners, but it doesn't show up directly on the schools page, as it should.

So, in summary, the new CDC guidance on schools comes up short on details on ventilation/filtration.

My fear is that many won't, and that means that CDC failed in that regard.

1. You can live and work anywhere in Canada. Yeah! Anywhere. Permanent Residents are not tied to a specific employer or a specific province...

I've been wanting to write this thread for a while. It has been inspired by hearing a common thought: why can't people just "listen"? If people just followed the rules, we wouldn't be in this mess. I think this is oversimplification of the problem with COVID: 1/

It is true, there are people who haven't been following guidelines (by definition that happened a LOT at Christmas/NYE in my region), but even before, we know transmission in private gatherings happens. 2/

These private gatherings are pictured to be big raucous parties, but in reality, even before lockdown, this is just people having dinner, watching TV, doing things we did before on a daily basis. These little ripples when added across the country make a big wave.. 3/

...and little can be done about this apart from positive messaging. You can't very well have police patrolling neighbourhoods across the country. 4/

Next thing is we keep hearing over and over and over, stay home. There are diminishing returns with this advice, but also, most people who can stay home ARE. So what's the issue? There are a HUGE # of people who can't stay home because they work in essential jobs 5/

Remember: Just because an idea is old doesn't mean it's good.

Knowing whether old ideas are more likely to be good requires understanding whether conditions have changed in important ways.

Horse archery was an amazing method of warfare for over a thousand years...then people invented guns, and suddenly this great idea that had stood the test of time became obsolete.

Then again, when underlying conditions don't change much, tried-and-true approaches are probably better.

"Learning the lessons of history" usually just means assuming ergodicity and stationarity in an informal time-series model...

@AuthorMonika No; we have been British here long before we were Scottish. British comes from 'Pritani' which is what the people here called themselves and the whole island before the Romans invaded.

When the Romans were here they Latinised this to Britannia, but also, for example, the Vindolanda tablets found at Hadrian's wall record the locals north of the wall as 'Britunculi' ' the little britons'

Looking at the post Roman period the 'scots' were Irish pirates who started to invade and colonize from the west. There has been a tribal split known between the 'British' - which covered the central belt where most of 'Scots' still live now, and the 'picts' to the North.


Now the latest research on the Picts suggests from their language that they and the 'British' had an originally common source and both from a same root proto-british language.


Then if you move forward to the Declaration of Arbroath - it literally says that the Scots invaded from Ireland and 'expulsis primo Britonibus et Pictis omnio deletis' - 'first routed the British then destroyed every single Pict'

The Ife Primary Education Research Project (1970-1983).

In 1970, as the Director of the Institute of Education of the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife), later Dean Faculty of Education, Prof. Babs Fafunwa & his team embarked on one of the most groundbreaking research projects in education for Yorubaland.


The aim of the project was to test the hypothesis that the best instructional medium for good concept formation at a very tender age is the mother tongue.

This was bolstered by the observation that “of all the continents and peoples of the world, it is only in Africa…

…that formal education is offered in a language that is foreign to the child.”

So, Yoruba was to be used & tested as an exclusive medium of passing information or instructions to a set of pupils.

The project was based on the premise that:

(a). the child will benefit culturally, socially, linguistically & cognitively.

(b). the child’s command of English will be improved if he is taught English as an entirely separate subject by a specialist teacher through the 6 years.

This is Chris Gratien posting. I created this series during Fall 2020 for my students as asynchronous material supported by readings and discussion. This is going to be a long thread, but it will be a great shortcut for those looking to make similar use of these materials.

There are two items worth pointing out: 1. This is an overview of the political, social, and cultural history of Islamicate societies. It does not deal with the origins of Islam or many theological questions. It does discuss Islam’s spread and the transformation of Islamic law.

2. This is the first part of a two-part sequence that takes the history of the Islamic world into the present. It emphasizes developments and themes that have particular relevance for later periods.

This is really a multivocal narrative of Islamic history. We feature over 20 scholars from almost as many institutions. Many of those who worked on it, myself included, study the early modern and modern era but have teaching obligations that take us further back in history.
