10 HARDCORE LIFE LESSONS FROM FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE:

1) Govern yourself

To quote Nietzsche:

ā€œHe who cannot obey himself will be commanded.ā€

Most people need an external force to motivate them into action, or to keep them in check morally.

Freedom is the will to be responsible to oneself.
Itā€™s imperative that a man learns to be his own leader, to act in accordance with his own beliefs, and to use his own values as a moral compass.

Such a man becomes elevated from a yes-man to a Superman.
2) Follow your own path

Nietzsche said:

ā€œYou have your way, and I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it doesnā€™t exist!ā€
The lesson here is that no one has the license to dictate your lifeā€™s trajectory.

Never let anyone interfere with your life, and you should never interfere with anyoneā€™s life.
3) Seek wisdom over knowledge

Nietzsche said:

ā€œThereā€™s a lot I donā€™t want to know. Wisdom sets limits, even to knowledgeā€

Knowing that you know next to nothing is the beginning of wisdom.
Self-introspection through writing or meditation is more important than accumulating information.

Overconsumption is harmful, whether itā€™s food or knowledge.

Wisdom makes you stoic, but stoicism wonā€™t make you wise.
4) Speak your truth

Nietzsche said:

ā€œA truths that are kept silent become poisonousā€

Your worldview is as unique as your fingerprints.
Learn to share your perspectives honestly, fearlessly & eloquently.

Never smolder your truth to make anyone comfortable.

Be authentic in everything you say & do.
5) Break free from herd mentality

To quote Nietzsche:

ā€œMeaning and morality of oneā€™s life must come from within oneself. Healthy, strong individuals seek self-expansion by experimenting and living dangerously.ā€
To find yourself, you need to think for yourself.

Intelligent & creative people do not blindly follow societyā€™s rules.

If you find yourself on the side of the majority, itā€™s time to pause and think.
6) Spend time in solitude:

Nietzsche:

ā€œI go into solitude so as not to drink out of everybodyā€™s cistern. When I am among the many, it feels as if they want to rob me of my soulā€
Thereā€™s no wisdom without self-awareness.

No self-awareness without contemplation.

No contemplation without solitude.

A sound mind is forged from silence, in the kiln of solitude.
7) Embrace failure

Nietzsche said:

ā€œYou must be ready to burn yourself in your own flame. How could you rise anew if you have not first become ashes?ā€
For the weak, failure is fatal.

For the wise, failure is feedback.

A fear of failure means you are incapable of handling success, and life doesnā€™t reward the incompetent.
8) Be a minimalist

Nietzsche:

ā€œIt is my ambition to say in ten sentences what others say in a bookā€

Learn to speak less, or increase the value per word spoken.
Minimalism is also applicable in every facet of life:

You donā€™t need to do everything, focus on the most essential.

You donā€™t need 1000 friends, get 10 loyal ones.

You donā€™t need 10 cars when you can only drive one at a time.
9) How to choose a life partner

Nietzsche wisely said:

ā€œWhen marrying, ask yourself this question:

Do you believe that you will be able to converse well with this person into your old age?

Everything else in marriage is transitory."
10) Amor Fati

Nietzsche famously said:

ā€œMy formula for greatness in a human being is amor fati: that one wants nothing to be different, not forward, not backward, not in all eternity. Not merely bear what is necessary, still less conceal itā€¦ but love it.ā€
To love oneā€™s fate is the greatest virtue.

Even Epictetus said:

ā€œDo not seek for things to happen the way you want them to; rather, wish that what happens happen the way it happens: then you will be happy.ā€

More from Principles

Shared a lot of wins publicly in 2021, so it feels appropriate to share the losses just as publicly.

Here are my 10 biggest Ls from 2021 (and what I learned from each one):

Dopamine Addiction

Humans were not made for social mediaā€”the dopamine hits are dangerous.

I fell victim.

On several occasions, I found myself constantly refreshing my notifications on a viral thread.

It was gross.

Iā€™m learning to physically force separation to avoid it.

Hustle Culture Fail

I spent the better part of the last decade as a hustle culture aficionado.

Then I burned myself out and was totally incapable of thinking creatively.

I made a change. Now I:
ā€¢ Work like a lion
ā€¢ Sleep 8 hours
ā€¢ Take more walks

My life & work have 10Xed.

Solana Fail

I invested in Solana early and was riding high when it hit $30+ in Aprilā€”10X+ on my investment.

I sold it and thought I was the next Warren Buffett.

Then it hit $100, $200, & $250ā€”as I stubbornly sat on the sidelines refusing to re-enter.

I am not Warren Buffett.

The Hedonic Treadmill

I tweeted this in Mayā€”and then failed to practice what I preached.

Every win felt a bit less exciting. Itā€™s part of our biology, but it was no way to live.

Measure internally, not externally.

I think a plausible explanation is that whatever Corbyn says or does, his critics will denounce - no matter how much hypocrisy it necessitates.

Corbyn opposes the exploitation of foreign sweatshop-workers - Labour MPs complain he's like Nigel

He speaks up in defence of migrants - Labour MPs whinge that he's not listening to the public's very real concerns about immigration:

He's wrong to prioritise Labour Party members over the public:

He's wrong to prioritise the public over Labour Party
