The NRA is already trying to juice gun sales by creating fear around a new Biden administration. “Stay vigilant and engaged” sounds a lot like “shoot people who disagree with you” to their supporters - too many of whom have been radicalized by the gun lobby’s extremist agenda.

Guns are an integral part of anti-government and white supremacist violence. In 2017, a joint report from the FBI and DHS said “firearms likely will continue to pose the greatest threat of lethal violence by [extremists] due to their availability and ease of use.”
Here’s an example. In October 2018, Donald Trump claimed a “caravan” of migrants was heading to the US from Mexico. NRATV, then the propaganda arm of the NRA, claimed Jewish billionaire George Soros was conspiring with Venezuela to send migrants here to influence the election.
Eight days later, a white supremacist who claimed the government was trying to take Americans’ guns entered the Pittsburgh Tree of Life synagogue and opened fire and killed 11 worshippers. He told an officer, “They’re committing genocide to my people. I just want to kill Jews.”
So what are the solutions? First of all, prohibit open carry. There is no place in a healthy democracy for armed intimidation. Especially in and around statehouses, courthouses and municipal buildings. Over 40 states allow open carry and in 2/3 it’s almost completely unregulated.
Pass extreme risk laws, aka red flag laws, which give family and police a way to intervene before warning signs of violence escalate into tragedies. The law allows them to petition a court for a temporary restraining order to remove guns from someone who is at-risk.
In the fall of 2019, the FBI filed an extreme risk protection order in Washington State against a member of a neo-Nazi group, after the man had started preparing for “an impending race war.” After the order was granted, police seized five military-style rifles and three pistols.
Close the Charleston loophole, which allows gun sales to proceed by default after three business days—even without a completed background check. That’s how the white supremacists who killed nine Black worshipers at an AME church in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2017 got his gun.
In at least 54% of the mass shootings between 2009 and 2017, the perpetrator also shot an intimate partner or family member. We must close “boyfriend loophole” in federal law that allows stalkers and dating partners convicted of domestic abuse to have easy access to guns.
Only 22 states and DC require a background check on unlicensed gun sales. That means in 28 states, people with dangerous histories can circumvent the background check system simply by purchasing a gun online or at a gun show. We must close this federal loophole.
White supremacy and anti-government conspiracy theories are fomenting violence across the US. Lax gun laws give domestic terrorists access to some of the deadliest and most effective tools to carry out violence, which is why strengthening our gun laws is more urgent than ever.

One fascist to watch in 2021 is Joseph Charles "Oakman" Golinske of SE MI. He's been a Proud Boy for a couple years, but took a break recently from the group and promotes himself through the "Oak Nation" channel on Telegram.


Most people may be familiar with him as the tall guy in the Proud Boys bridge shot, from their August 17, 2019 attack on Portland, which featured an American Guard bus trying (and failing) to bludgeon antifascists with hammers.


He was also with his g/f at the time (Dominique Tota, left of Tarrio), and that's definitely a twitter account folks will want to block/report because he posts on it.


He's been plenty active at the pro-Covid/anti-mask/ReOpen protests in Lansing MI, seen here with Jerry Wayne and an effigy of Gretchen Whitmer, who his militia friends tried to kidnap and publicly execute.


Outside of the Proud Boys, his solo "career" with Oak Nation features the same misogyny, classism and gateway to far-right domestic terrorism the Proud Boys themselves feature. Here's him peddling oxychlorinque and bragging about harassing service workers.

One of the most moving and relevant stories of the Battle of the Bulge, or any American Soldier in any war, is that of Master Sergeant Roddie Edmonds, a Knoxville, Tennessee native, who served with the 106th Infantry.

Roddie was captured early on in the Battle of the Bulge, on December 19th, when Panzer forces plowed through his unit.

He, along with almost his entire regiment, was forced to surrender.

The men were transported to the Stalag IX-A POW camp in Ziegenhain, Germany.

Roddie was the senior enlisted American Soldier at the site. As such, he was the conduit between all American Soldiers and their German captors.

In late January, the camp’s commandant, Major Siegmann [pictured here], ordered Roddie, a Christian, to identify all Jewish Soldiers and order them to stand in formation by themselves the next day.

In fact, Jewish Soldiers had been told to bury their dog tags before capture. The dog tag identified Jews with the letter “H” for Hebrew.

Donna Strickland, one of this year's Nobel Laureates, was not considered "notable enough" for Wikipedia as late as this May—reported by a number of sites, including the Independent. I dug into this a little. Here's the data—


This is the first deletion, back in 2014. A bit hard to read between the lines, but the basic story that an admin had Stickland's page "speedy deleted"—i.e., deleted without debate. The method was something called Copyright Jujitsu.

In particular, the admin had the page deleted not because of notability, but because it included a photograph of Strickland that had ambiguous copyright status. This is a method that people developed to get rid of content they didn't want, but also didn't want to debate.

"Copyright Jujitsu" because it is usually used against spam from companies; a PR officer uploads promotional material to Wikipedia. Instead of debating whether it's neutral, the admin can say "we'd love to have it, but the material appears to violate your company's copyright".

Usually the PR office and the IP office are separate in a company, and the idea of releasing promotional material under public domain is such a legal nightmare that the PR person goes away.
