Dear @SecDef :

First, as an African American Navy veteran who is the daughter of one of the first five Black Men to serve as officers on the USS Midway in the 50s, I cannot express how delighted & proud I am of you and yours ascension to the awesome responsibility & authority

of Secretary of the entire Department of Defense and its multiple subordinate entities. Congratulations, Sir. Yours will not be an easy task, but your reputation of being a smart, deeply ethical and formidable leader proceeds you, and will serve you well.

I write to raise very
specific concern I have regarding the radicalization and polarization of our troops by media outlets that have targeted them with propaganda and deception.

As I am sure you know, FoxNews, OANN and Newsmax have been selling white supremacy grievance as a business model for years
and their presence on Military bases, installation and deployed units is almost ubiquitous.

As the events of January 6, and the ongoing investigations that have ensued demonstrate, the poison of those
outlets is infecting and debilitating our troops.

It is killing off their discernment, causing them to encamp on absolute lies & fiction, tearing them apart from their fellow brothers & sisters in arms, and in too many cases, inciting people who swear to defend the
Constitution, into straight violent sedition.

The removal of these outlets from all federal buildings is entirely the prerogative of the President, but President Biden would never make such a move without a recommendation from you.

And so I write this missive to you to ask
that you carefully consider my request that these propaganda machines be shut down in all military, DOD facilities.

This is a matter of national security, as well as good order & discipline. No way will the American people tolerate the taxes they pay to train & equip the best
fighting force in the world, to be wasted, and even turned against them by those very troops they trusted to serve. Surely, you can see that nothing good can come of that.

The complicity of dozens of active duty, reserve & ex-military in the insurrection this month cannot be
ignored. I trust that your sober, no-nonsense analysis of the situation will bring you to the same conclusion.

Best wishes to you. May God keep you, and all who serve our country, safe.

In amity & deep respect,
Pam Keith

If you're curious what Trump's defense will look like, all you have to do is turn on Fox News. My latest at @mmfa

The tl;dr is that for years right-wing media have been excusing Trump's violent rhetoric by going, "Yes, but THE DEMOCRATS..." and then bending themselves into knots to pretend that Dems were calling for violence when they very, very clearly weren't.

And in fact, this predates Trump.

In 2008, Obama was talking about not backing down in the face of an ugly campaign. He said "If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun."

That quote was from the movie The Untouchables. And there's no way anybody reading that quote in good faith could conclude that he was talking about actual guns and knives. But it became a big talking point on the

In 2018, Obama-era Attorney General Eric Holder was speaking to a group of Georgia Democrats about GOP voter suppression. He riffed on Michelle Obama's "When they go low, we go high" line from the 2016 DNC.

MDZS is laden with buddhist references. As a South Asian person, and history buff, it is so interesting to see how Buddhism, which originated from India, migrated, flourished & changed in the context of China. Here's some research (🙏🏼 @starkjeon for CN insight + citations)

1. LWJ’s sword Bichen ‘is likely an abbreviation for the term 躲避红尘 (duǒ bì hóng chén), which can be translated as such: 躲避: shunning or hiding away from 红尘 (worldly affairs; which is a buddhist teaching.) (

2. Sandu (三 毒), Jiang Cheng’s sword, refers to the three poisons (triviṣa) in Buddhism; desire (kāma-taṇhā), delusion (bhava-taṇhā) and hatred (vibhava-taṇhā).

These 3 poisons represent the roots of craving (tanha) and are the cause of Dukkha (suffering, pain) and thus result in rebirth.

Interesting that MXTX used this name for one of the characters who suffers, arguably, the worst of these three emotions.

3. The Qian kun purse “乾坤袋 (qián kūn dài) – can be called “Heaven and Earth” Pouch. In Buddhism, Maitreya (मैत्रेय) owns this to store items. It was believed that there was a mythical space inside the bag that could absorb the world.” (TWX)
