Important.
Whenever you invest in Fund of funds, check the expense ratios of both the local fund & the global fund which is investing into.
e.g., Nasdaq FOF ER is 0.1%, but you have to add the ER of ETF which 0.54%, total 0.64%

Good to see AMCs like @EdelweissMF mentioning it.

When you invest in a global fund, and compare expenses across funds:

1. Compare \U0001f34e to \U0001f34e: Total cost includes offshore fund cost plus what local AMC charges.

2. Get this data from the AMC website. Many 3rd party websites don\u2019t include underlying fund costs.

Grab a cup of coffee, in this thread I will explain

1. What are ETFs?
2. How are they different from Mutual Funds?
3. What are factors to consider while investing in ETFs?

Lets dive right in.

ETFs stand for Exchange Traded Funds

The easiest way to understand them is to think of them as Mutual Funds that are traded on the exchange just like stocks.

(technically, ETFs are nothing like Mutual Funds)

ETFs are structured as pools of investment that are inclined to

a. lower the fees associated with investment
b. shift the bulk load of fees to frequent traders of the ETF than holders
c. allow investors to invest in diverse set of securities / asset classes easily

ETFs originated after the stock market crash of 1987 in US

'Passive Investing' was the new shiny thing and investors wanted a low cost way to invest in the index without any manager actively managing their investments

Enter Nate Most

Nate Most is known as the father of ETFs
A physicist by training, Nate got the idea of ETF from warehouse receipts

Is investing in water possible?

The film, The Big Short that stars top Hollywood actors like Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Ryan Gosling and Steve Carell.

If you have watched it closely, the film ends(before credits) with this quote about Bale's character, Michael Burry:

"The small investing he still does is all focused on one commodity: water."

To give you a recap, Michael Burry is the person who predicted the 2008 crisis and also made a lot of money by shorting the market.

And, now he is focusing on investing in water.

But why water?

Water is a scarce commodity, where only 1% of the Earth's surface water is freshwater.

Burry has been buying water and farmland assets before it gets expensive. Even Wall Street has started treating water as a serious investment.

How can you trade or invest in water?

There are index funds, ETFs, companies that focus only on water. Invesco S&P Global Water Index is one of them. This ETF invests in water utilities, infrastructure, equipment, etc.

Most software founders, particularly in B2B, need to get radically better at sales. @Steli , who is the best person for explaining the scrappy stages in the beginning and then building out a team with scripts and processes, wrote a guide to:

For technical founders it is irrationally, obscenely hard to reverse years of programming (ba dum bum) that sales is a value-destroying activity. Sales is CLEARLY a value-creating activity, contingent on you have a value-creating product.

The world will not drop what they are doing to adopt your work. This is particularly true in B2B, where simply building a better mousetrap won't overcome the activation energy required to get people with additional non-mice problems to prioritize changing mousetraps today.

This is very non-obvious for founders because founders are not often people who *want* to be sold to. We often come from a background where trying out tools is a bit of a fun hobby. We like looking at all the options, making charts, and ripping out partially complete tests.

"This week I unsuccessfully trialed four software options for automating that thing that has been killing us. Our actual production process remains the same as last week. Don't worry; this was a great use of time." is not a thing you want to write in a progress report to manager.

In the spring and summer of 2016, as reported by the Times, activity we traced to GRU was reported to the FBI. This was the standard model of interaction companies used for nation-state attacks against likely US targeted.

In the Spring of 2017, after a deep dive into the Fake News phenomena, the security team wanted to publish an update that covered what we had learned. At this point, we didn’t have any advertising content or the big IRA cluster, but we did know about the GRU model.

This report when through dozens of edits as different equities were represented. I did not have any meetings with Sheryl on the paper, but I can’t speak to whether she was in the loop with my higher-ups.

In the end, the difficult question of attribution was settled by us pointing to the DNI report instead of saying Russia or GRU directly. In my pre-briefs with members of Congress, I made it clear that we believed this action was GRU.
